  1. I suppose that depends on what his .850 OPS would translate to hitting in the NL Central regulary might do. Giles made his bed, he's gotta lie in it. Personally, I think he was a fool for going back to San Diego. But, the bigger fool was Hendry for not courting Giles the way he courted Furcal. For what he spent on Neifi, Rusch and Jones, he could have had Giles. Thank heaven we have Neifi. Pardon me, but all the pining for Giles on this board reminds me of a guy who still is in love with his college girlfriend who broke up with him, wishing she'd see the light and return to him, after she has married another man and had a couple of kids.
  2. And Jock was worth 3 years 16 million? With a platoon partner like Murton, he could be. It wasn't as if Hendry had a lot of REALISTIC alternatives at the time. If Corey had decided to grow up a season earlier, then getting Jacque wouldn't have been such a necessity. Jones hasn't been the problem with the Cubs this year. Wood, Prior, Pierre, Murton, Neifi, and Rusch have been far more culpable. At least Prior and Murton can still contribute next year.
  3. Tell me why Jones is a big mistake? Half this board wanted to spend more than $30 million to bring Brian Giles on the team. Note that Hendry might have been right about Jones and this board might have been wrong about Giles: OPS Jones .851 Giles .785 SLG Cedeno .402 Giles .397 Platoon Jones and Murton in LF next year, and you'll have an OPS over .900 in LF. That's some nice work, but it's not that simple. Jones plays in the NL Central, home of the: 3rd, 8th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 16th best pitching staffs in the NL. Brian Giles plays in the NL West, home of the: 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th and 9th best pitching staffs in the NL. Brian Giles plays in the absolute toughest hitting park in baseball. San Fran, LA and Arizona are other tough hitters parks in his league. Jacque Jones plays most of his games in arguably the best hitting division in baseball. If Brian Giles was playing for the Cubs, his numbers would be considerably better. Side note: Brian Giles can get the ball back to the cut off man on the fly. I was just about to make the exact same post. Giles ops away from petco is about .850 and that is while playing a good chunk of games in PacBell and Dodger Stadium. Hardly worth $10-11 million per year for three years at his age.
  4. When I see how much money the medium market D-Backs are willing to eat for an unproductive player, I can't figure out why big market Hendry won't do the same with the equally unproductive Glendon Rusch, who has one less year and significantly less money owed to him than Ortiz. Must be that lefty thing - different topic for a different day I guess. Seems to me that Hendry prides himself as a player's GM. I don't think he wants to humiliate a player for a short-tem gain. He may be trying to keep a good rep with future free agents.

  6. I'd rather have the Cubs spend$8 million on him rather than the money they gave Neifi or Rusch.
  7. Bruce, any chance the Cubs would be willing to have a Jones/Murton platoon in LF in 2007? why would you want to platoon jones just when he has started hitting lefties? i would be much more concerned about cf than left or right if i were the cubs. Murton kills lefties. Have you seen Jones swing against LH starters that bust him inside? Ugly.
  8. Bruce, any chance the Cubs would be willing to have a Jones/Murton platoon in LF in 2007?
  9. Nice article, Bruce. Tough on the organization without being snarky. I have to admit the manlove for Neifi in the Cubs organization does border on the bizarre.
  10. one good start by marmol and marshall's 4.43 era remind you of prior's near cy young season and wood's 14 win, 3.19 era and amazing pitching down the stretch leading the cubs to the postseason? that's some imagination you got there. What IS nice to see is the Cubs farm system developing a long train of potential starters. I see Marshall, Marmol, and Guzman being the back end of the Cubs rotation next year if Maddux does return.
  11. That's how I see it too. The only thing is, if I buy a car and turns out to be a lemon I will do whatever I can to get rid of it and get something more reliable. The Cubs just try to make lemonade. That's what they're going to have to do: hope some team needs a lefty and will pick up most, if not all of the contract. I'll give Hendry a big pat on the back if he finds another team to take Rusch and pay any of his contract. What do you give Hendry for giving Rusch that contract? I think the Cubs could put Rusch in the back of the pen. He has the chance of being respectable if he pitches an inning or two at a time.
  12. Ron, Though Carlos Marmol has gotten more attention in the past week through his great pitching with the parent club, another converted catcher, Randy Wells, has had an excellent campaign at West Tenn. His K/BB and WHIP ratios are excellent. That level of success at his age bodes well for his chances of making the Show eventually. Several questions: 1. When do you expect he will make his first appearance with the parent club? 2. Assuming he eventually makes the 25-man roster, is his full potential as a reliever, closer, or starter? 3. On what does Randy need to work to get him to Wrigley? What is his pitch repetoire at this point? 4. How is his makeup? Thanks!
  13. No, I don't think it's coaching. Guzman is rusty after limited innings in the past few years. In addition, the Venezuelans on this team - Z, Ronny, and Angel - tend to be on the emotional side. May be a cultural thing. I believe Guzman will be a part of the staring rotation next year, barring injury. As for Hill, I don't see him with the Cubs next year. Bruce has mentioned that management has soured on him, but he's shown enough to be decent trade bait.
  14. I blame Patterson. CPatt was making stupid swings at some really bad pitches, and looked worse than most rookies. Doesn't matter if you're batting 1st or 7th. I can't blame the coaching staff for his stubborn attitude. If Pie is trying to learn patience at the plate at age 21 in Iowa, what does that say about Corey's willingness to learn?
  15. It's crossed my mind. At least he made the majors, which puts him ahead of many a minor league player.
  16. I like Murton, but his .600 OPS against RHPs are not good enough to play LF. He looks like a perfect platoon partner for Jones in LF next year. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/player?statsId=7597 http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/player?categoryId=85225
  17. He saw a lefty with a high K rate who ended up beating the stuffing out of the league in 2004. I don't blame Hendry for rolling the dice here, but they've clearly come up snake-eyes. Agreed. Pierre, Wood, Prior, Rusch - a lot of snake eyes this year. Of those four, only Prior should be on the team next year.
  18. If I remember, the Cubs did the same thing a few years back with a kid named Zambrano.
  19. I think it's just as unlikely that he will perform at May level for an entire season as it was that he'd perform at April level for an entire season. I still don't like the deal, as it seems unlikely he'd produce at this peak rate for the next three years and justify the deal he got. But I'll be rooting for him nonetheless. JJ has proven he can hit LHPs who don't have great stuff, but a good LHP who busts him inside still makes him look foolish at the plate. I want to keep JJ, but only if the Cubs get a decent platoon partner for him. Murton would be a logical choice if Murton's SLG against RHP doesn't improve.
  20. Nobody, because Pie should be ready (and if we keep imploding, he'll get some major time this year). The easiest way to upgrade the offense would be a better corner outfielder and getting someone who mauls lefties to platoon with Jacque Jones. We've got the money to spend on it. We already have Matt Murton.
  21. Confidence and the ability to listen to good advice are the only two things keeping Rich Hill from being a solid #3 or #4 starter in the majors. whose advice has he ignored? i know baker said some stuff about him not listening...is that what you're referring to? Hill himself said that he wasn't listening enough for his own good.
  22. Confidence and the ability to listen to good advice are the only two things keeping Rich Hill from being a solid #3 or #4 starter in the majors.
  23. Bruce, Why don't the Cubs consider a Murton / Jones platoon in LF in 2007? The splits indicate that Murton looks like a stud against LHP, and Jones is a stud against RHP. Cost can't be an issue, given Murton is earning minimum. If Murton does get it together against RHP in 2007, then Hendry would have some attractive trade bait in either Jones or Murton.
  24. Soccer, thanks for the update. At least Hill wasn't walking people. Seems to be a confidence thing with him. The Cubs have a number of minor leaguers with decent plate discipline. The Cubs' management do adjust to reality - they just don't want to hear "I told you so." Do you think Pie merits a call up in July?
