  1. Actually not a bad trade IF Guzman is truly over his injury problems. We get to keep Cedeno and Pie as well. If Guzman is not healthy, the deal ain't so great. Whether Guzman is healthy or not doesn't change the fact that we get absolutely fleeced. Hill and Bedard really aren't that different, Prior has a word I can't think of more value than Tejada, and we're throwing in Patterson. It's highway robbery. I understand your frustration by looking at the specifics of this trade in isolation, but put the trade in the overall context of the organization. The Cubs now have Tejada at SS, Cedeno at 2B, and Bedard and Guzman in the starting rotation for the next four years, Pie developing in AAA, and EPatt as trade bait (perhaps paired with Walker?). I can see why Hendry pulled the trigger - we're now a playoff caliber team for the next three years. He has enough bargaining chips to trade for another starter or upgrade in a trade involving Williams.
  2. Hill and Bedard are similar in that both sides don't know if both, either, or neither will reach their potential. If we can get Byrnes or Craig Wilson to platoon with JJ, then we'll be set.

  4. Offer A works for the Cubs and the Orioles. Offer B works for the Cubs but doesn't make sense for the Orioles. I doubt Hendry is going to trade Prior unless he gets something like Offer B in return. I predict that if the Orioles don't want a deal along the lines of either Offer A or B, then he'll sit tight until a better deal comes along during the season. If offer A worked for the Cubs and Orioles, I imagine the deal would be done. To me it makes much more sense for Baltimore too. They aren't going anywhere this year with or without Prior and with or without Tejada. I also think that Cedeno has to be part of the deal unless they are stupid enough to want Perez. Assuming the Orioles have a rational owner.
  5. Jones, Encarnacion, Rondell White or Reggie Sanders? Sanders>White>Jones>Encarnacion White would be on the bottom for the Cubs and Cards, because of he's injury-prone. Rondell needs to be a DH. MN is a good fit for him.

  7. Draft picks are tricky things. Remember in 2002 when we had all those extra picks that Baseball America drooled over? Only Hill has made the majors out of the first four rounds of that class. Hagerty, Blasko, Clanton, Petrick, Jones, and Brownlie all had the injury bug and may never have an impact in the majors.
  8. I don't think it is. Now Hendry has several options: 1. He can trade Pie as part of a deal for Tejada and have all three OF positions set. 2. He can platoon Jones and Murton if Pie is playing for the Cubs in 2007. 3. He can platoon Jones and Hairston or another rightie this year. Please tell me you're joking? A platoon of Jones and Hairston? Yeah, that will produce some massive offensive numbers... Not ideal, admittedly, but against LHP Murton is much more of a power bat, and Hairston could bat 2nd against LHP. Jones has some very good numbers when facing RHP, which some on this board overlook. Can you show me somewhere in Jones' stats that back up this claim because I sure don't see it. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=4085
  9. Yeah, Cpatt was the reason we didn't win games last year. It was all his fault. Are you just trying to be different or do you actually believe this stuff? Yes, I do believe it.
  10. The abuse Hendry is getting on this board is way over the top. Is anyone sure that Giles even WANTED to come play for the Cubs? Have the Phillies continued to insist on Z or Prior in exchange for Abreu? There is SO MUCH we can't know about individual players or GMs. The biggest problem the Cubs have faced is that production from Sosa and CPatt absolutely cratered from 2003 in a way almost NEVER seen in the history of baseball. That's two huge holes that the Cubs could not have foreseen. If teams want Pie or Hill or Prior or Z for mediocre talent or aging ballplayers, I can see why Hendry has not made "THE BIG TRADE." If the Orioles are rational, then the Cubs have a chance of landing Tejada. Given the ownership, that might be a big IF.

  13. Time to pass the hat at NSBB. :D This signing will work better than most people think. Even a platoon with Hairston will be an upgrade from last year.
  14. If that is the case, then KC has blown it. The team should have traded for Sisco during the 2005 season to give him time to work on his game in AA or AAA so he'd be ready to start this year.
  15. A platoon of Jacque Jones and Kevin Mench in RF would work, assuming the Rangers are reasonable trading partners. The danger of having Reggie Sanders is that Murton would be put on the bench in favor of a "proven veteran." You need a young bench and batters/relievers with extreme L/R splits to "Dusty-proof" a team.
  16. I agree. Hendry would be smart to trade Pie to get Tejada and have Cedeno at 2B and EPatt as trade bait.
  17. He's barely acceptable for a corner OF against RHP, not quite a stud. If we're trading Walker and a prospect for Mench, skip Jones entirely. His numbers vs. RHP are alot better than acceptable. However, why would you sign a guy for three years at more than $5M a year to be a platoon player? Jones, who would bat against RHP, would be had a $5 MM per year for three years. Mench, who would bat against LHP in RF and would share LF with Murton against RHP, would cost under $1 million for this year. If Pie becomes the RF in 2007, he'll be paid $300k, and you would platoon Jones and Murton in LF for less than $6 million for 2007 and 2008. A Jones/Mench/Murton platoon would give you more cost-effective production over three years than paying a declining Brian Giles $11 million per year for three years, leaving you money to get Tejada at SS if the opportunity arises.
  18. And Macias is hitting .375... with an OBP of .376.
  19. I don't understand the hatred for JJ. He is a stud against righties and a dud against lefties. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=4085 A great platoon with someone we could get for Walker and a pitching prospect http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=5088 A deeper bench and a more cost-effective combination than Brian Giles perhaps? :D
  20. I think Hendry looks at the value that a player would bring to the entire organization, not unlike an investment banker managing a portfolio of loans and investments. The contracts with Rusch, Howry, Eyre, and Dempster allow Hendry to trade the organization's strength (pitching prospects) for established position players. Neifi! is a hedge in a market (SS) with few alternatives and high prices. The contracts with Neifi!, Howry, Rusch, and Eyre look overvalued individually but have more value when looking at the entire "portfolio" of players and prospects. By maximizing and storing value, Hendry can pounce on undervalued assets that become available during distress sales (e.g., Ramirez, DLee, now Tejada).
  21. Tejada for Mulder & Wainwright and move Eck over to 2nd. Yea, Mulder is going to want to make a long-term commitment to the Os.
  22. Given that Stockstill and Mazzone are both in Baltimore, I could see the following pitchers traded for Tejada: Hill Wellemeyer Novoa Stockstill might believe that under Mazzone's wing, those three might be able to reach their full potential. As for the position prospects, I predict that Hendry will trade Pie or Cedeno but not both. (I'd prefer to keep Cedeno, who has some real baseball smarts. Keeping Ronny also would allow the Cubs to trade EPatt and Walker). Perhaps Harvey or Dope will be in the mix, too.
  23. Pretty much. We're more likely to have to give up Cedeno than Pie anyway, because Baltimore doesn't have an in-house SS option unless they move Roberts over there, in which case Walker would be on the table instead of Cedeno. If Walker were traded to the Os, then the Cubs will have trouble signing any veteran free agents as long as Hendry is GM. EPatt would be a better choice to trade if Roberts were to move to SS.
  24. I think JH will save Williams for a trade for Vazquez.
