  1. Sean, When the Cubs drafted you, to which college had you committed? As a 12th round draft pick, why did you decide to forgo college and the possibility of being drafted higher a couple of years later?
  2. Eric, Thanks for answering our questions. What areas of your game have you been working hardest to improve during your time in Peoria?
  3. I would do that. I like Hill's curve, but I don't see him having any other major league pitch. He's a lot closer to Shawn Estes than he is Barry Zito. With the 'wealth' of pitching prospects we have, I'd definitely roll the dice here. The Cubs' season is over, so the Cubs aren't desperate.
  4. Dusty is a veteran's manager. Nothing wrong with that if you're the coach of the 2005 SF Giants. :P
  5. Really? I didn't hear about that. I just found this article in today's Denver Post. Apparently, the deal could still go through but the Rockies (understandably) want to get as much as they can without settling with the Nats right away. http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_2848110 I doubt we'll get Preston, unless it's with the understanding that he's keeping Pie's spot warm. The Cubs will be in a rebuilding mode through next spring.
  6. Assuming Nomar gets healthy, I would think Hendry would trade Neifi to a playoff team that has an injury or needs a good backup infielder (and Neifi is a great backup infielder). The Cubs would then platoon Nomar and Ronny to give them some time to evaluate where the team should go at SS for 2006.
  7. No way does Murton go. Cubs have plenty of players who can throw heat. Now guys that can throw heat without getting burned.... :P
  8. With the exception of Rich Hill (4th round), all the top draft picks (including compensation picks) from the 2002 draft class are injured or seriously underperforming. Of the 2001 class, Sisco is at KC, Willis is at FLA.
  9. It's always bad times when someone affiliated with the team visits a message board. Dave Duncan visited Cards Talk once anonymously, posted something (I think something positive about Chuck Finley but I could be wrong) and he got ripped to shreds by a ton of posters. When they found out it was Dunc, the anti-Duncussa or LaDuncan (whichever you prefer) faction came out of the woodwork and made fun of him to no end. It was ugly. Say it with me now...m-o-d-e-r-a-t-o-r-s. I absolutely love the fact that we've got one of the beat writers for the Cubs as a regular reader here, one of the minor league announcers, we've had minor league players come online and browse (and post???). A lot of people have complained that we run a "country club" type of atmosphere here or claim censorship...but our ability to attract and retain some of these people is only possible because we keep that type of thing under control. The people on that website could have benefitted tremendously by having Duncan contributing from time to time but lost that by allowing a few people to drive him away. Tell those people to spend five minutes at the ESPN.com Cubs bulletin board to see what a lack of "censorship" is like. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!
  10. That isn't true. Gammons either got bad info or was just making a false assumption. First of all, I have read quotes from Von Joshua (West Tenn hitting coach) that said that Pie still has a lot to work on and that right now he could play in the majors but that rushing him would stunt his growth. Secondly, the Cubs have taken their time with Felix. They aren't going to change that now. The earliest he is going to be up is next year and I wouldn't expect him up before mid-season. Good enough reason to trade for Kotsay.
  11. Yeah, but KC would be smart to trade for Sisco's Rule V rights so they could send him down to AA to retool him as a starter. Otherwise it would be a wasted draft pick IMO. Trading Dubois and Sisco's rights for Affeldt sounds like a decent trade to me.
  12. You don't get it. No one is saying Grieve is great, or should start. All he has to do is take a walk to be an improvement over what has been coming off the bench. It's not like anyone on the bench is that much better (aside from Cedeno), particularly Macias. Swapping out Macias for Grieve would be a world of improvement. Grieve is more of a major league player than Macias is or Wilson was, and they were on the team. I saw Grieve play at a game at Round Rock. Poor attitude / body language. Seemed unprofessional to me. While I don't like Macias' role with the Cubs, I'd prefer his hustle and effort to seeing Grieve at Wrigley.
  13. It's nothing personal of course, but Rusch has incredible value at this point. I'd be offering him up to San Diego for Josh Barfield or X Nady right now. San Diego needs a 5th starter badly right now. Would Arizona be interested in him for Conor Jackson? I'm surprised that there hasn't been more mentioned about Glendon at this point. All those teams in need of pitching should be knocking on Chicago's door first. If it took a Scott Kazmir to get Victor Zambrano, I want a Scott Kazmir type prospect for Rusch, preferably a hitter though. I might be offering Mad Dog to San Diego instead, even if that meant a lesser prospect or eating more money. MD would have fewer homers hit against him in Petco and he would be close to home. I just don't see a role for MD with the Cubs next year.
  14. For what it's worth, after the Latroy trade went down, Levine said that Hendry had talked to the Mets and the Marlins about a bigger trade that would have included Latroy and other Cubs players or prospects. Rather than do a bigger deal, Hendry decided on Williams and Aardsma. I'm just guessing, but I'd think a deal with the Mets would have included Looper and Floyd or Cameron. A Marlins deal might have included Encarnacion or Conine (ugh) and Mota or Jones. From everything I've read, Juan Encarnacion is still very available. At what price, I have no clue. It can't be low enough for my taste!
  15. I kind of expect anything with Kotsay to drag a little bit - at least through the break. We can outbid the Yankees in terms of prospects, but we wouldn't necessarily need to add Kotsay if we're selling. I disagree. Kotsay would be an excellent addition for this year and next, which would give Felix more time to hone the finer aspects of his game.
  16. Ron, Thanks again for answering our questions about the Diamond Jaxx. Could you give us a status report on Rocky Cherry? Has his fastball comeback? Does he look like an organization player or a legit middle relief prospect for the Cubs?
  17. Thanks, DJAXX, for arranging the Q&A with Nathan. Nathan, EPatt has been tearing the cover off the ball and has good control of the strike zone. What reason do you think EPatt hasn't been promoted to Daytona? Is there a particular part of his game that he needs to develop at Peoria?
  18. You forgot to include D. Lee as part of the deal. 8)
  19. If by good offense in 2003 you mean by watching the likes of Hee Seop Choi, Bobby Hill, Alex Gonzalez, Lenny Harris, and Damian Miller all in the starting lineup at the same time, well then yes, by all means we had a good offense. And Randall Simon, Tom Goodwin and Paul Bako on the bench. My Lord, how did we get anywhere? We beat St. Louis 4 out of 5 in a very close series The Nats just did the same to us this weekend. The Astros choked in 2003 in the same way the Cubs choked last year. Sometimes just a few key plays can make or break a season.
  20. According to the Waco Tribune, Kyle Reynolds has signed with the Cubs, and Trey Taylor is expected to sign soon: http://www.wacotrib.com/sports/content/sports/college/2005/06/29/20050629wacbears_trio.html Fresh off last week's College World Series appearance, Baylor juniors Abe Woody, Kyle Reynolds and Tyler Bullock have signed pro baseball contracts. A sixth-round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs, Reynolds said he'll rehabilitate his broken left thumb for at least the next two weeks in Mesa, Ariz., before reporting to the Cubs' Class A team in Boise, Idaho. Five Baylor seniors are also expected to report to minor league teams in the upcoming days, including pitcher Trey Taylor (seventh round, Cubs)...
  21. Because Florida got value (Willis) for value (Clement), Florida turned to the Cubs when they had to deal Derrick Lee in a hurry. Fair trades lead to more trades that can help both teams.
  22. Kearns might sent to Iowa until September, then potential replace Burnitz in RF next year.
  23. For what it's worth, give or take some lesser prospects going in the appropriate directions: Cubs get: Kotsay Dunn Kearns As get: Pinto Aardsma Murton Reds get: Nolasco Mitre Wellemeyer Patterson
  24. Quote from Gammons' most recent column: Royals GM Allard Baird on Buddy Bell: "He was in the big leagues, he knows what it's like to have talent, struggle and become a great player. And he loves players." Says Showalter: "They hired the right man. They're getting better. Let me tell you, [Andrew] Sisco is going to be special. He can be a great closer." That, my friends, is the difference between Baird and Hendry. Sisco might become a great closer at KC, but if he had a chance to mature in the minors with the Cubs and learned a good breaking pitch, he might have become a great starter with the Cubs. Looks like Rich Hill will have a better chance making it as a starter in the ML than Sisco. If the Cubs have lost a closer in Sisco, then the loss is regretable but not all that great.
