  1. Why do people like Harvey? According to Flieta, Harvey has a tool you can't teach. Which I've heard is significantly better than being a tool you can't teach. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/player?statsId=7470
  2. Loduca probably had an affair with Thomson's daughter. I hope you mean stepdaughter.
  3. I agree about Jones. I wouldn't be adverse to calling up Pie by June 1. Pie will struggle offensively in his first years in the majors, but he has shown an ability to adjust that CPatt just didn't have.
  4. Which 10 players were those? The ones that Grimsley named? I don't know which 10 players they were. I think it's likely ESPN's source for this story is the New York Post: http://www.nypost.com/seven/12292006/sports/eight_of_balco_10_failed_steroid_test_sports_brian_costello.htm Here are the ten that were subpoenaed during the BALCO scandal: Barry Bonds Gary Sheffield Jason Giambi Marvin Bernard Benito Santiago Armandos Rios Randy Velarde Jeremy Giambi Bobby Estalella AJ Pierzynski Only Pierzynski was never called to testify. Is it wrong to hope AJ tested positive? NO!
  5. Is anyone impressed that Ronny has improved his IsoD?
  6. Given 1. the hype about McCarthy 2. that Danks is a Texas boy, whom the Rangers would be likely to keep if at all possible Does this trade seem to anyone else on this board as a "change of scenery" trade for both prospects?
  7. From a post at BP: So I can’t say I don’t understand why Moore traded (Sisco). Sisco, like Ambiorix Burgos (traded for Brian Bannister) and Runelvys Hernandez (released), had an unacceptably high talent-to-performance ratio, and that the Royals have erased all of three of them from their pitching staff in 10 days means, if nothing else, that they’re sending a message to the rest of the organization that potential without production will no longer be tolerated. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/unfiltered/?p=104 I think now would be a great time to dangle Sean Marshall in a trade with KC. Marshall is the anti-Sisco - a mildly talented lefty who, if healthy, will reach his ceiling and provide a very solid #5 starter with a great work ethic and on-field composure. I think Marshall could blossom there, and KC would get real value for its money. He'd be a perfect fit for a franchise that is starting to get its act together.
  8. The above is a short excerpt from an article up on Baseball Prospectus right now. In baseball, maybe more than any other sport, I would not give up on a guy with personality issues. Jeff Kent is a huge jerk, but I'd rather have him at second base than Mark Derosa. I'd rather have JD Drew than Willy Taveras and Ryan Church than Angel Pagan, too. Kent and JD have performed at a high level in the majors for a number of years. Sisco hasn't.
  9. Other than the money, which the Tribune seems to have, I don't see a downside to signing Marquis. If he rebounds, great. If not, by that time one of the Cubs pitching prospects or Prior likely will have earned a spot in the starting rotation. Marquis is both a hedge and a bet for Hendry. you really think they're just going to cast him aside when he signed a 3 year, 21 mil contract? it took rusch becoming the worst pitcher in baseball before they took him out of the rotation, and they had a lot less committed to him. If Guzman or another young prospect develops into a good pitcher over the next year, the additonal cost to the major league payroll is almost nil. The Cubs could eat a fair portion of Marquis' contract and trade him to another team. Aren't we talking about doing that very thing with Jacque because Felix Pie will be ready by midseason?
  10. Let's see. A franchise (Cubs) that values, if not overvalues, hard-throwing pitching prospects exposes Sisco to the Rule V draft. Another franchise (Royals), desperate for starting pitching, trades Sisco for a generic bench player. Speaks volumes about Sisco's makeup, doesn't it? Possibly. I found it to be really strange that the Royals didn't send him to AAA last year to stretch him back out in a starting role. It will be interesting to see what the Sox do with him. I agree. Even if Sisco had failed to take to a starting role, the Royals always could have returned him to the pen.

  13. Houston also kicks in WIllie Tavares. Giving $ for Marquis doesn't look so bad in comparison.
  14. Wrong, having Neifi! bat at the top of the lineup is the dumbest idea ever!
  15. Guzman > Marmol > Marshall, for the reasons Tim gave. I think Guzman could be a fixture on the Cubs' staff for a long time. If he and Prior get healthy, we'd have a nasty starting five at some point. Marmol's size and stuff tells me he'll be a great setup man or closer in a couple of years. Marshall is trade bait. I think a team like KC (which would love a solid and cheap #5 starter) or Seattle (Moyer clone in a big park) would be two logical destinations for him.
  16. In the long run, some of the Cubs' prospects or rehab projects might surpass him. At some point in the future, the Cubs could trade Marquis or even Lilly. The key is that, unlike last year, the Cubs are fully hedged for a starting rotation and for setup and closer Starting rotation Z Hill Lilly Marquis Prior Competing for a spot in starting rotation (2007-2008) Miller, Marshall, Guzman (this year) Gallagher, Veal (next year) Setup or closer Howry Dempster Competing for setup or closer this year Wood Marmol Expensive hedges for the starting rotation, but hey, the Cubs have the money. In retrospect, Hendry should have traded for more middle relief in 2003 and starting pitching in 2006. Jim does learn from his mistakes (however slowly).
  17. Hendry must be anxious to make sure Lou has plenty of options for starters. Spending money like a drunken sailor! http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-061209cubs-story,1,2062914.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines
  18. How would you rank Guzman, Marshall, and Marmol for 2007 and long-term potential? Are any of the three serious trade bait? Discuss why you ranked them as you did.
  19. According to BP, Jacque had a higher VORP than Brian Giles. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/sortable/index.php?cid=120114
  20. Single-A manager... obviously if that's the big news, then the choice is not going to be someone like Hector Villanueva. Well, Hector is one big dude!
  21. link Doesn't mean Murton is untouchable. I'm sure he could be had for the right price. DLee could be had for the right price.
  22. I'm not so sure. His walk numbers are improving.
  23. Agreed. Could make a nice middle reliever for a struggling team.
  24. Yea, that kind of move did wonders for Sisco's development.
