  1. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/gameTrax?gameId=260708321 Guess he's facing the same learning curve as Marshall. Looks great one start, then looks awful.
  2. They appear to be teaching him the value of clogging the bases wtih walks. Better late than never, I suppose.
  3. And how many teams passed on Albert Pujols how many times? The MLB draft, moreso than any other draft, is extremely difficult to get right. Yes, I've been disappointed in the Cubs player development, especially at the offensive end. But Harvey was the consensus choice amongst scouts and others at the time of the pick. Hear, hear! He still might be converted to a pitcher.
  4. Chris, Thanks for answering our questions. How often do you get specific instruction from coaches on hitting and fielding techniques or approaches? How has the instruction changed as you have moved from up the ladder from A-ball?
  5. Though he did speak up enough to say he thought he was a "#6 type hitter"...and oh, how we and the local press mocked. Curses! He's a No. 2 hitter now. When did they move him into that slot? I could swear he started doing well for Baltimore hitting down in the lineup. He bats seventh in the line up. Now I feel less crazy. Thanks. In some ways, I understand the Cubs' desire to see if he would make a good #1-#3 hitter. In the NL, his speed and ability to steal bases are wasted batting #7. Corey has to take a fair share of the responsibility for his lack of success in Chicago. I have seen very few major league players consistently swing at the bad pitches he did in 2004 and 2005. The Cubs at last seem to be learning that OBP and bunting need to be taught at the minor league level. I think Pie's struggles at the plate this year have been his belated instruction in these skills by the Cubs coaching staff. I'm glad Corey has found a home in Baltimore and wish him continued success.
  6. MiLB interview with Randy Wells. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/index.jsp
  7. I think this organization is slowly but surely focusing on baseball smarts and OPS. You see more of it in the minors, but Hendry has been patching the parent team for three years. Perhaps he can take some more time because of this disastrous season and develop a coherent package for the 2007 version of the Cubs.
  8. I disagree. First, the Cubs may want to limit Guzman's innings this year, given how little he's thrown since 2003. Second, they may have wanted to work on his mechanics. Third, the more time he spends in the majors, the less nervous he will be when he's a starter in 2007.
  9. I don't like it. Aram plays well enough when he isn't the big bat on the team. Put Carlos Lee in LF next year, along with DLee, and Aram will do just fine.
  10. Ron, EPatt is having a fine season at West Tenn. Will he be ready for the parent club next spring? How is his defense?
  11. What is it with Downs? He was in the same draft as Sean Marshall, and he's still pitcing at Boise? :?
  12. Good night for Randy and Felix.
  13. What about Izturis and LaRoche for Ramirez? In 2007 put Izturis at SS, Cedeno at 2B, EPatt at Iowa, and then in 2008 decide which two of the three you want to keep.
  14. No point right now. But they could move him to the all-former-position-player-pitching-roster and I can hope to see them all take the field at one time someday. I think Harvey will make the conversion to the mound after next season. I'm betting after THIS season. The Cubs are sure being creative in finding replacements for the lost pitching class of the 2002 draft.
  15. He's drafted guys who have made the majors. But he hasn't exactly created a juggernaut with his picks. You can't write it off, but there's nothing wrong with criticizing, nor assuming the worst until you've been proved otherwise. Given the poor track record the Cubs have had in producing OFs within the minor league system, developing even an average-plus outfielder who starts at Wrigley would be welcome!
  16. I'm not so sure. A number of the more recent minor league prospects have suspiciously high OBPs.
  17. Don't you think taking a line drive on the elbow had more impact on Prior's career path?
  18. Assuming Prior regains his form by the end of the season, should the Cubs consider trading him and playing for 2008? The Cubs have some huge holes. They need to rebuild two-thirds of their outfield (and get a platoon partner for Jacque) as well as a finding a SS/2B to complement Ronny. I sense neither Pie nor Patterson will be ready to start at Wrigley until the second half of 2007 at best. For instance, would trading Prior to the Diamondbacks for Drew and Quentin be worthwhile? Given all the young pitching that will be ready by mid-season 2007 (Marshall, Marmol, Guzman, Gallagher, and Wells) and the Cubs' ability to nuture that pitching, perhaps getting some top-flight position prospects for Prior would be best for him and the Cubs. Thoughts?
  19. Catcher Jake Fox was promoted from Daytona to West Tenn after batting .313 with 15 doubles, a triple, 16 home runs and 61 RBIs in 66 games. He had a .574 slugging percentage. http://cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060618&content_id=1511831&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc Looks like Jose Reyes was promoted to Iowa. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/external/brandedstats/t998.html?cid=451&lid=112&t=t_ros&sid=milb ------------------------- 6/18 Promotions: C Jose Reyes from AA West Tenn to AAA Iowa RHP Randy Wells from AA West Tenn to AAA Iowa C Jake Fox from High-A Daytona to AA West Tenn LHRP Ed Campusano from A Peoria to AA West Tenn (after the MWL All-Star game) C Jake Muyco from A Peoria to High-A Daytona SS Jonathon Mota from A Peoria to High-A+ Daytona
  20. Nice job. Looking at this list and the success of the Cubs' pitching prospects lately, I think Hendry and Co. can be rightly proud in identifying and developing pitching talent. I hope someday they can do the same with OFs. Colvin will be the first test.
  21. Nicely done. Send this to all the Chicago newspapers. Send it to the Cubs front office. Ask for an explanation. Tell them the season ticket holders demand an explanation. This story is inspiring, but realistically, I don't think Murton has the talent that Dusty brought to the game. And I'm a Murton fan that believes he should be on the team next year, even if he's just a platoon player.
  22. On a side note, has anyone else been pleasantly surprised by his OBP this season? Seems to be a trend among Cub propects. Pie, Patterson, and Dope have improve their OBP-BA spread this year. Perhaps Cubs management understands the issue but is unwilling to acknowledge their (subtle) shift in public.
  23. For all the problems the Cubs have had developing hitters, they do have a gift for getting the best out of their pitching prospects (when not injured, that is). At 21, Danks might be a worthwhile project, and I'm skeptical that Wood would stay with the Cubs in 2007 as a reliever. True, but if Volquez has more upside, I'd rather go with him. Or heck, maybe the Cubs could somehow con the Rangers out of two of those three. :D Agreed, but with Wood's injury history, I'm doubtful we'd get more than Danks anyway.
