  1. I saw that yesterday and was a little surprised. It seems as if Lawton and Gerut would have very different roles with this team. Gerut seems more like a pickup mainly for the future, who can also help out off the bench and with some spot starts. You have to imagine that Lawton would have been plugged into LF and leadoff right away.
  2. Sports talk radio and the internet have helped create much more cynnical, negative fans. The upside to it is that it's much easier for everyone to find information and learn more about the game, the players and each team. But the downside is the constant second guessing, fans often thinking they know more than management/coaches and never being satisfied. It's become a fixture in the sports landscape regardless of the team or sport. Certainly some of these elements were present at that time also, but not nearly on the level of today.
  3. Yeah no power and no walks. But his play and his ability to play 2B, 3B, OF and C are good enough for him to be a decent 25th man. He's actually gotten less time in the field this year, but it seems like he's had more pinch-hit opportunities this year. I have no problem with him getting the occasional spot start at the rate he's had this year. He's actually hitting .315 in games that he starts (54 AB's). My biggest problem is that he's been terrible off the bench as a pinch-hitter.
  4. I love Murton and I've been saying he should be playing everyday for a while now. But he has been one lucky man. It's not a knock on him, he's creating some of his own breaks by putting the ball in play, having decent speed and hustling everything out. He's just had some doozies that have been recorded as hits.
  5. I can't believe Alou is going to send Hawkins out there again. With the abuse he's taken in the first two games and the way he's struggled, I figured there was no way he was going to trot him out today.
  6. That is a very crowded company you are in  I know, and it grows by the day. I don't want to hate Holly, but I can't like him while he's sucking it up like this. There's no reason to dislike Hollandsworth for it though. He's going out there and playing the same way he did last year. It's not his fault that he's being overused.
  7. He did. That's why he's out today and was replaced last night. Weird. Wasn't that in the 1st inning? Strange that he'd play through it for most of the game and then come out. I'm guessing it started to tighten up on him as the game went along. After he fouled that pitch off he seemed to tweak it again when he couldn't decide if he was going to slide or not going into 2nd. I can't remember if that was after his 1st or 2nd AB, but he seemed to really be limping after that.
  8. This year Crede hasn't been much worse than Huff though. Crede in 296 AB's: .253/.306/.436 with 13 HR and 48 RBI. Huff in 360 AB's: .267/.327/.422 with 12 HR and 58 RBI. Certainly Huff has had the better career thus far, but he's also 2 years older, plus the fact that Crede is MUCH better defensively. I just don't see how it's worth giving up McCarthy and Marte for. One week ago Huff was at .251/.314/.383. Maybe he's just starting to heat up and getting him out of Tampa will get him going. It just seems like a steep price to give up for what he's producing this year.
  9. Hill or Williams would be our equivalent to McCarthy, but we have no one on Marte's level in the bullpen. Either way it sounds like they're asking for too much for Huff.
  10. Why did Greenberg have to get hit in the head?
  11. If Branyan is the floor for Sing or Dopirak, then I think the Cubs have two real good prospects on their hands. Now, which one do they keep in 2008? I don't think Branyan is the floor for either. Both of them could definitely have a lower floor in my opinion.
  12. It really is difficult to tell this year. Last year, Cabrera seemed the most likely scenario with Nomar as an outside possibility. In 2003 Lowell seemed the most likely early on, but Ramirez was at least discussed and Lofton was speculated once Corey went down. This year there seems to be much less speculation in the media. There are just so few teams that look willing to sell and so few big players who will be free agents this year, that it's really not a buyer's market. Early in the year Huff was speculated but there has been much discussion about dealing with Tampa. Dunn and Kearns have generated the most speculation in the media. There seems to be more sure reports of Hendry's pursuit and fondness for Kearns. I really think Hendry will make a deal to improve the outfield, but unlike the past two seasons I wouldn't be surprised at all if he didn't. He will definitely make some sort of deal before August 31st even if it's very minor. With our 40-man/Rule V situation, I could see him making a big splash for a left fielder.
  13. Yes and many here were ecstatic about it. That's different though. Oh wait...
  14. I agree. The power just isn't there now and he isn't going to be a savior for this team. Is he currently the best option for LF? Yes. He can still be a productive hitter with that lack of power and possibly improve this lineup slightly. But we should still look for other options and if we can land a Kearns-type player who has room to grow and is young, we should do it. If the price is too high, then let's see what Murton can do. But I think people are jumping the gun a little bit on what he can do this year. For all of his positives, he's looked overmatched in limited AB's against righties. We've discussed his lack of power, and while he runs well, he doesn't have blazing speed. Right now I don't see a great fit anywhere in the lineup for him. I suppose we could drop Hairston and go with Murton/Walker at the top.
  15. I'm not going to say he's a bad guy, but I think "class act" is going a little far.
  16. Like I said last night, it's selective outrage that fans are showing. Basically every outfielder who comes to Wrigley gets his name changed at him and the "Wilson sucks" chant. People joke about that often around here and I rarely hear that being called a disgrace. The only difference last night is that it was the majority of a half-full crowd rather than just the bleachers. I'm not saying I like it, but it's nothing new and I think the outrage is a little overblown. By the way for everyone talking about how most people don't get heckled in their job and how it wouldn't be fair and they couldn't handle it? I did some telemarketing when I was a poor college student. Some of the verbal abuse I took on the phone there put last night to shame. But I understood that came with the territory and I was making pretty decent money for a part-time job in college so I took it.
  17. I don't think so. He was a bad GM, yes. But it's an interesting perspective to hear how these guys work from general managers who have dealt with them in the past.
  18. Gotta love that sarcasm. Yes, you're right. That was the ONLY concern teams had. And the only reason the Red Sox wanted to dump him was his contract. Yup, it was. I think a lot people are wary of paying a LF 20 million a year, no matter how good he is. I acknowledged he's one of the best hitters in the game and has been for some time. I also said he had been underrated nationally until the last couple of years and he would be a huge boost to any team. But to just ignore any shortcomings he has is ridiculous. Boston was fed up with some of his antics off the field and his lackadaisical play in the field and on the bases. That doesn't mean I wouldn't want him on the Cubs, that just means that he has flaws. My point is that if Vlad, Bonds or Pujols were placed on irrevocable waivers and had that same contract, I think there would be much more interest and someone would snatch them up.
  19. Hairston was limping quite a bit and I believe he tweaked his ankle.
  20. Gotta love that sarcasm. Yes, you're right. That was the ONLY concern teams had. And the only reason the Red Sox wanted to dump him was his contract.
  21. The wind has been blowing straight to RF all game.
  22. Has Durham been banged up lately? I was wondering why Deivi Cruz was starting in place of him.
  23. Hairston was really limping earlier and I think he tweaked his ankle.
  24. Every outfielder that comes to Wrigley hears that chant at least once a game. The only difference is that it's a majority of the crowd instead of just the bleachers.
