  1. From the chat page: Gillette is the editor of The 2005 ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia, an ESPN.com MLB Insider and the Co-Chair of SABR Business of Baseball Committee. He also said this about Kearns: Gary Gillette: (1:22 PM ET ) But I don't think Cincy will deal Kearns because he's cheap, unlike Griffey or Dunn. They would have to be overwhelmed to make a deal for Kearns right now, especially since he's stinging the ball since his recall. I think he's a little optimistic on Kearns, and I've been big on adding Kearns since last year. He's playing in a major hitters park right now, so I don't see how coming to Wrigley is going to give him a big boost in power.
  2. I would just like to add to this Kearns thread that in his ESPN.com chat today, Gary Gillette had this to say: Goose (Chicago): Why does Jim Hendry love Austin Kearns so much? Gary Gillette: (1:20 PM ET ) Because with a new start and in Wrigley Field, Kearns could become an MVP candidate overnight. Plus the Cubs badly need a RH-hitting OF with power, which is why the Gerut trade made little sense other than to unload DuBois. He then added this: Goose (Chicago): Isn't that a little optimistic? MVP candidate overnight? Gary Gillette: (1:22 PM ET ) Don't think so, but I don't think he will be traded this week, either.
  3. That's what I was thinking. That option was not completely reasonable considering his horrible defense, base running, age and the sub-par seasons he had before '04.
  4. But they don't have many guys like that. Podsednik is at .360 and Konerko is at .358. Those are the only players they have above .350 and Rowand (.346) is the only other player above .340. We have two players above .370 (Lee, Ramirez) and three others at .345 or better in Burnitz, Walker and Barrett. The White Sox overall OBP is .324 while ours is .330.
  5. He's probably not going to be back until next week. He's going to Peoria today-Thursday and most likely to West Tenn after that.
  6. If Nomar is healthy, he's going to play. He probably won't be able to play everyday, but I suspect he'll get 8 out of 10 starts. Some people are carried away on this Dusty-Neifi thing. Dusty choosing to play Neifi over a rookie is one thing. Dusty choosing to play Neifi over Nomar is completely different.
  7. So would we all. Then who bats in the pitcher's spot? Blanco? Then there's no one on the bench. Think this out a little bit guys.
  8. And then who pinch hits in the pitcher's spot?
  9. Vizquel had to go a ways into the outfield. not a routine play and not on the infield. That doesn't have anything to do with it. It wasn't an infield fly because there was only one runner on.
  10. Well he has to be on it until next Thursday.
  11. I wonder if they plan to use him as a set-up man or if they will pressured to have him close becuase of his contract and comparisons to Smoltz. If you add Wood and Williamson to our pen as set-up men, suddenly it could become a strength.
  12. I think you're right. Dusty said Kerry was going to throw again today and they hoped he would continue to improve as he has.
  13. Hoops I'm sure you get sick of being asked this but do you have any inside information as to who the Cubs are targeting now? To me Kearns seems like the guy that we'll end up with if we land an OF at the deadline based on everything that's been reported. Is there anyone off the radar that Jim has been working on?
  14. It's not really a "so-called LF platoon." It's the definition of a LF platoon. Murton plays against lefties and Hollandsworth plays against righties. I don't agree with it, but Dusty is right when he says it's a platoon.
  15. Actually we're 7-4 since the All-Star break. We lost 1 to Pittsburgh, 2 to the Reds and 1 to the Cardinals. 10-4 total since the 8 game losing streak. Duke pitched a great game against us, the Reds hammered us last Wednesday and all 3 games this weekend could have gone either way. The loss to the Reds on Thursday is the one we really should have had. I'm encouraged that we won 2/3 this weekend, even if the Cardinals were short-handed. Saturday and Sunday night's wins are the exact type of game that we usually find a way to lose in St. Louis. This is a big week for us. 7 home games against the Giants and Diamondbacks. 6-1 is a stretch, but we could and probably should go 5-2. We need to start winning games at home. Getting Nomar and Williamson back in the next week and a half will be a big boost, although they won't be saviors. If we can also upgrade the offense in the outfield, we should be in fine position to win the Wild Card.
  16. While a very good #3 pitcher would be a boost, this team has more pressing needs than that. Maddux is always much better in the second half and we may have Wood for most of the second half. The far bigger need is an outfield bat. If we add an impact bat we can definitely get by with this rotation.
  17. We're 4.5 back from a fading Washington for the Wild Card race and 1 back in the loss column from a bunch of less than spectacular teams. We have a favorable schedule the rest of the way and have a chance to beat the teams in front of us. Getting Nomar and Williamson back will be a lift. If we can get an impact bat in the OF, we'll be in fine position to take the Wild Card.
  18. Yeah I don't really understand the double switch there if Dempster is going to pitch the 9th. Although he may have wanted Gerut's glove out in LF also.
  19. Is Dempster not able to go today? I don't see the reason for the double switch if he's going to close it in the 9th.
  20. But don't you also think that the discussion that follows will pertain more to the major league team than the Iowa Cubs?
  21. Why? They're both major league players and at least one of them will be back with the major league team this year, perhaps Williamson as soon as next week. Not everyone reads the minor league forum, but most check out baseball discussions and this is more related to the major league team and the impact those players can have here. There has been discussion in this forum of ML players doing rehab stints before.
  22. It's nothing but speculation from the NY Post, not really anything to get discouraged about. They don't have any information about what teams are talking to each other about what players. It's simply their guess as to "who might want him."
  23. Yeah I'm thinking someone needs to edit that title. They were talking, but I think that's quite a reach. I definitely couldn't hear anything and it was tough to read his lips.
  24. Wow, that's not a knee-jerk reaction or anything.
