  1. Why would he? He's facing a righty and we don't need to thin our bench with the Blanco and the pitcher's spot coming up.
  2. What in the world was that shovel pass that Walker threw to Lee? Good job Ohman!
  3. Backe/Lane/Patton is not that hard to beat. I still find that offer hard to believe. So do I. I can't imagine the Astros turning that down, especially with their like of local guys and Dunn supposedly wanting to play in Texas again. They would have him at least through 2007.
  4. You can't compare the two. Ramirez's value is MUCH higher now than it was when we traded for him. Dunn's value now is much higher than Ramirez's was in '03. When we traded for him, Ramirez was closer to what Kearns is than Dunn. He had one big season, then followed that up with a very poor one, and was off to an average start in '03. Kearns had one very big season, an average to above-average year in '03. Since then, he has had injury problems, not gotten a ton of playing time and struggled when he has played. I still would really like Kearns. I think he could have an Aramis-like rebound in new place when given regular playing time. He would also come much cheaper than Dunn.
  5. Since when have people cared what gammons said? (Remember: "Nomar will not be traded. He will continue to be a member of the boston red sox" Ten minutes later: "Nomar Traded to Chicago") So because he was wrong on a trade rumor, no one should care what he thinks of the skills of a certain player? Gammons is a smart baseball man. He knows the game well, he knows the people in the game well. He usually has a good idea of what players a team is targeting or who they're talking to as far as trades or free agency. He doesn't do so well when it comes to predicting trades or where players will land. But I don't see how missing on some rumors has anything to do with talking about a player or that just because he missed on a rumor no one should care what he thinks. If you don't think he knows baseball well, then that's one thing. If you don't care what he thinks about a player just because he was wrong on the Nomar trade, well that doesn't make much sense.
  6. does that mean activated to the big leagues in five to six day ect or the minor leagues? Majors, but I suspect he'll spend closer to 10 days in Iowa at a minimum. Yeah I heard the interview with Williamson also, but I think the first week of August is the very earliest that we would see him.
  7. Yeah but I'm not just talking about walks. Barrett just isn't as good of a hitter in the 8 spot as he is higher in the lineup. When he's hitting 8th he often chases a bad pitch, when he's higher he waits for a pitch he can drive. I think Murton will maintain his approach anywhere in the lineup, which is always a positive.
  8. I like moving Barrett up in the lineup out of the 8 spot. I think Murton will be patient and have the same approach wherever he hits in the lineup, so he's alright hitting 8th. Barrett hacks at the first pitch remotely close when he's down there.
  9. The Cubs' advance scout needs to be taken outside and shot. The same thing happens every single time they face a guy the first time. Is that really necessary? I thought we were trying to get away from that kind of stuff with all of the new guests coming onto NSBB.
  10. Why? He's not eligible for free agency after this year, and will probably make around $8M in arbitration. If we traded for him we would most definitely be keeping him for next year at least and most likely through 2007.
  11. I would hardly consider a .038 gap in OPS the difference between good and phenomenal. That difference could be closed in a week. For reference, Michael Barrett's OPS dropped .038 points over the course of 8 starts (June 24-July 4) and was then raised back up .026 points in his next 5 games. Long term, Dunn is the much better option. But there really hasn't been a big difference overall this year and if they stayed at the same rate, I don't think the impact on the team would be significantly different this year. Since '99 Floyd has posted OPS' of .897, .907, .968, .951, .894, .814, and now .891 this year. As you can see he's been near or above .900 every season in the last 7 years. The problem of course is keeping him healthy. Dunn is younger and has the higher ceiling. Floyd would come cheaper (maybe quite a bit cheaper) and would cost less next year. If the price for Dunn is too high, Cliff could be a good option. Next year he would be in a contract year, perhaps playing for his last fairly big contract.
  12. Our 7-8-9 hitters have now started each game 3-3 with 4 RBI since the All-Star break.
  13. It's all about the bottom of the order.
  14. Well not necessarily. Dubois, Mitre and Dope would technically be 2 major leaguers and a prospect. I would do that in a heartbeat. The term "2 major leaguers and a prospect" is pretty vague.
  15. Our 7-9 hitters are now 5-5 with 3 doubles.
  16. Can you spin every event in the game to something negitive? Thanks in advance. I'm not spinning anything. Except for saying Murton is going to sit for weeks every time he gets out or turning almost every event into something anti-Dusty.
  17. Like I said, everyone has different opinions on what Nomar will be able to produce. You don't think he'll be able to produce much and I think he can be more than a role player. There's nothing wrong with that. You're right that no one should expect him to turn this team around, although he can provide a boost. I just took issue with the way you phrased your opinions. Instead of saying he "might not be able to contribute much" or "I don't think he can be more than a role player" your opinions came off as a matter of certainty. Perhaps it's just a matter of semantics. I just don't like when people try to diagnose an injury or a player's return from an injury, simply by comparing him to another. This is a rare baseball injury where we can't look at 10 different cases and see what those players did. You're just looking at Piazza's but ignoring the multiple variables that exist which could seperate Nomar from Piazza's rehab. I'm sure even his rehab team isn't sure of what to expect from him until they see him back on his rehab assignment.
  18. You simply can't make those statements with that level of certainty, just because Mike Piazza had a similar injury. No one knows what we'll get from Nomar. You don't think he'll produce much. Some people think he could be a huge boost. I think he can produce close to the same level he did with the Cubs last year. But to say that "he'll be a small role player at best" and "he won't be much of an offensive threat" like you're working with Nomar on his rehab is simply off base. My wife is a D.P.T. and whenever we're discussing injuries like this, the first thing that always comes out is "Every person is different" and that you can't make a diagnosis from 1,000 miles away when you've never seen the athlete. Nomar's body could be able to handle the injury better than Piazza did. They have different swings, play different positions, different body-types and likely were/are in different shape. The fact is that right now, no one knows what Nomar we'll be getting. Not even you. The physicians and trainers working with him right now are the only ones who have an idea as to how ready he'll be and where his body will be in 2.5 weeks.
  19. Good work and to answer your question, yes. We don't need to worry about the Braves, they're going to win the East. The Nationals are going to fold, they simply can't keep up this rate of winning one-run games. The talent level on that team just isn't high enough for them to win the East. I also don't see the Astros hanging in there. They've been playing WAY over their heads lately and that only got them to where we are. I've seen people say "well everyone said they were done last year too." Well last year they had Beltran, Kent and Bagwell. Unless they get a big boost to their offense, they won't hang. I believe Florida is our main competitor for the Wild Card, then it's the Nationals and Phillies (more worried about them than the Mets or Astros.) In order to win the Wild Card we need to keep our pitching staff healthy, acquire an arm in the bullpen, possibly an upgrade in the outfield, and have Nomar make a decent contribution.
  20. Like I said when this Dunn talk was hot before, I just don't see him getting traded until next July unless a team really overpays.
  21. And somehow, he's not even the worst guest from the Trib on "Chicago Tribune Live." They have some doozies.
  22. I don't think I would have a problem with that. Once the Jaxx season is over if they wanted to call him up to be a pinch runner and get the occasional spot start, it could be good for him. I really hope they let him finish his season at West Tenn. though.
