  1. color me happy. This means that the cubs are finally ready to win. No more grand schemes of building from within or whatever ploy they've gone with in the past. The best thing about this is that if it blows up in their face, it'll only be a year, maybe two in doing. I fully expect a big off season and I expect the Cubs to be major contenders. Lou is not wanting for money. Lou doesn't need to make a name for himself. Lou wants a WS ring. He wouldn't come to chicago if he didn't think there was a legit shot at a ring.
  2. Murton is at least as good as Bradley, has a much better attitude, and has a much higher potential. If we have an OF of Murton, Bradley, and Jones we will be improved, but I see it as a good OF --- not a great OF. I sure would like to see us have a superstar in the OF while keeping Murton. . . . do what you wish with Jones. . . . trade him, throw him under the bus, make him the team mascot ;) Just keep Murton :D
  3. I'd much rather see 4 divisions and only the division winners go to the post season. I hate the wild card. . . hate it, hate it, hate it, hate.
  4. can you imagine how many twinkies, ho-ho's, and donuts you can buy with $15 million?
  5. i'm sure the pilot will find a way to blame arod.
  6. savage!
  7. I like the idea of trading Barrett. Unless he puts up Piazza like numbers, he'll never make up for his less-than-stellar catching skills. As for comparing him to Wells, yes they have similar stats. The difference is that you could get wells for 155 games while you might only get Barrett for 125 games. I've always believed you can win with a defensive catcher as long as you make up for it at the other positions. . .. . the last few years, the cubs have not had that luxury.
  8. I'm still doing the Q and A. This thread just seemed to take on that quality. you didn't answer my first question ;)
  9. Bruce, if a tree falls in the woods and ronnie woo woo isn't there to yell about it, do the cubs still suck? Also, do all of today's questions mean you won't be doing the Q and A (or have I already missed out on that one)? I'm of the belief that Piniella isn't coming to Chicago unless he knows they fully intend to spend money (wisely) and get proven major league talent. . . not washed up old balls talent, either. If Lou is the man, I see the Cubs doing their best (however pathetic their best may be) to win and win now. If Joe is hired, I see them taking the "build for the future" route. I also believe that Soriano will go to whichever team promises him the starting 2b job. I also believe that Matt Murton will make the all star team next year.
  10. thanks, guys!
  11. where can I find the Dusty Dice pic? I couldn't get the search feature to work :(
  12. i'd blow the whole 23m on hotdogs. Imagine an almost unlimited amount of hot dogs? The cubs would have an incredible advantage over the rest of the league.
  13. Ryne and I have a routine with cards. He sits in my lap and we go through the whole pack . . . I tell him who the player is, what I know about him, who he plays for, what position, etc. I bought a box of 88 topps and we occasionally go through a pack or two. I have an unopened box of rack packs from '84 and we go through them every once in a while. . . it's fun to tell him about the players that I watched when I was a kid. Ryne immediately picks out the Cubs :) He has a strong attachment to Matt Murton.
  14. opening packs and looking for the cubs was the fun part. I recall my grandmother buying me a wax box of 85 fleer. . . she and I went through all the packs, sorting out the cubs from the rest of the cards. . . . to hell with the Clemens, Eric Davis, K Puckett, etc rookie cards; I wanted the likes of Jody Davis, Rich Hebner, and Ron Hassey! You guys will like this site. . . dang near every card imaginable http://www.baseballcardproject.com
  15. My son likes cards and he's only 3. The tough part is that packs cost 2 or 3 bucks and you only get 8 cards. Jeez, make 'em worthless and let me get 10-15 for 50 cents. To me, it's not about getting something of monetary value.
  16. so the GM tells the new manager, "skip, you can hire your choice of coaches. . . . except for the ones that I don't want you to hire or the ones I don't want you to replace."
  17. I'd take Torre in a heartbeat. The yankees haven't won anything in the past years because their pitching has been less than good. High payroll doesn't always mean high talent. As for his St Louis years, just take a look at what he had to work with. The cardinals were rebuilding after the herzog era. Torre had guys like gilkey, jose felix, greg jefferies, etc. Those teams were atrocious, yet Torre won quite a few games with them.
  18. Arkansas will have to beat Miss State and Ole Miss, as well as splitting between So Carolina and Tennessee. It's very possible. It will be great if the SECW comes down to that last game in Little Rock.
  19. Today was a matter of the Hogs finally playing up to their potential. Nutt has finally left the OC alone to do his thing (Amen!). They have a soft schedule and will likely be 7-1 going into November. . . . they should have a rather lofty ranking by that time as well. With RBs such as McFadden and Jones, they have the ability to beat just about anyone. . . . when their OLine and Dline are playing well, good things will happen.
  20. A's win game 7 of the WS with a 9th inning sacrafice bunt and sac fly. . . . hendry totally forgets about obp. . .. .
  21. people who sponsor those pages have waaaaaay too much money than they know what to do with ;)
  22. think of the butt whippins and crazy antics he and Z could put on a team. it would be high comedy at it's finest.
  23. Mork is from Ork. Mindy is from Earth.
  24. the hitter is always likely to make an out. I say the sac bunt has it's place, but many times is misused.

of the known options hendry had for LF, who did any better than jones? The only gripe we can have is the contract length. It's very possible that the contract length was what got Jones to the Cubs . . . .otherwise, we'd not even had him in LF and that could have gotten ugly. Also, something should be mentioned (if not already) that Jones played through some pretty tough injuries. Face it, Jones was the least of the Cubs problems. . . . he wasn't a problem in my opinion. If I were him, there's no way I'd want to stay with the Cubs.
