  1. August 8, 1989. Maddux threw a CG against the then 1st place Expos. That night, the Cubs tied for first and went into 1st the next day and never looked back. Ryno went yard that night, as did Mark Grace. I was only 12 years old and I as scaled the steps to the grandstands my breath was taken away at the sight of the bright green grass and flowing ivy covered walls.
  2. Hendry would pick up pins that have cracks and weaknesses. After a while, they'd all break and the bowlers would be pissed.
  3. ha ha, he has a girly name. . . . . . I'm loving the Marlins run. I'm a huge wild card hater, but this year I hope the Marlins win it all.
  4. raise your hand if you think nady goes yard. i do!!!!
  5. good to see a small crowd :) I'm amazed that Steve Trachsel is 2nd in the NL in wins. . . . . amazing what an offense will do for ya.
  6. we need an 89/98/01 kind of year. . . . the kind where we're ass ugly on paper but somehow defy all laws of baseball and win enough to get into the post season. that's about our only hope at this point.
  7. http://www.kasralainy.edu.eg/english/students/study/atlas_dermatology/male/male2/31.JPG not suitable for work. .. . .hell, it's not suitable for most human beings, but it's the google image for "scrotal hematoma"
  8. Mad Dog 1 Dusty 1 Cubs 0
  9. Yeah, I talked to a Cardinal fan friend of mine and told him about the "121." He laughed and said "I have no way of knowing the number, but I promise Tony has more." I just looked at the Don Baylor figures. . . . he blew Dusty out of the water in lineup tinkering.
  10. Yep, that's be beauty of retrosheet (boxscores) and now it's all right at your fingertips.
  11. This may be old news, but I noticed that http://www.baseball-reference.com now has a lineup and batting order link. You can see lineups and batting orders for every team of every year. . . links to retro sheet. . . . etc. The cool thing is at the bottom of the batting order page, it gives you a list of "most common" lineups and a number of total lineups. Guess how many different lineups the Cubs had in 2005? 121 Wow http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/2005_bo.shtml
  12. why can't serena or one of the gals from NSBB get this gig? I wonder how someone like Muskat Love gets the job?
  13. the twit gets a HoF vote, if I remember correctly.
  14. Al Gore invented the high 5.
  15. Hendry is one of the few GM's who believes the crap that Boras sells him. Boras: I have C Lee. He's gonna be the next Babe Ruth. You can have him for 25 Million per year. Hendry: I dunno. . .how about 28 million? Boras: SOLD!!
  16. Almost as many as the cubs have bought in the past 100 years. I'd be thrilled if the cubs bought management that had a clue what a baseball club should look like.
  17. marge schott is a man, MAN!
  18. My name is Rachel Phelps, not Jeff Loria! http://www.fast-rewind.com/soms1.jpg she was trying to get the team moved to miami though further proof that girls should be kept out of baseball ;)

  20. If I'm a St Louis resident, the new stadium definitely pisses me off. I don't understand how the new stadium can create much more (if any) revenue. There are quite a few less seats in the new stadium. Consequently, the locals bought up a bunch of the season tickets. That's bad enough for the team's revenues, but it hurts the city, too. With the locals buying up the season tickets, there are thousands less out of towners roaming the streets of SL, buying up hotel rooms, eating the food, buying the gate way arch souveniers, etc, etc, etc. The folks I talked to in St Louis (in June) weren't all that happy about it. Their fear was that the first time the cardinals have a "bad" year, the bandwagoners would jump ship and they wouldn't be able to give away tickets.
  21. before he was born, my son was named "Ryne." As for the Cubs, I say pitching injuries have been the biggest killer. If we have healthy pitching, we're around .500 and right in the thick of the race --- even with a putrid offense.
  22. I didn't realize Dwight was that high of a prospect. Of course, I was only 12 when Dwight came up in '89. I had no clue who the cub's prospects were. There are so many weird things surrounding that era of cubs baseball. Heck, didn't Raffy name one of his kids after Sandberg? That had to be weird for Ryno. Maybe someday the truth will come out. . . . it'll be an interesting story to read, no doubt about it. I wonder if Cindy was getting any from Hector Villanueva? As for Moyer, I was young when he came up, too. However, I recall not being happy when I'd turn on WGN and see he was starting a game. He was brutal. I'm glad he finally figured it out, but I was never sad to see him get out of Chicago.
  23. lots of managers have finished in first place. Why is Dusty so darned special?
