  1. Who cares, most likely organizational filler to put at Iowa. If he catches fire, all the better. If I could dig up the line from The Rookie about how "if I didn't report a guy with a 97 mile fastball, i'd be fired", I would add it here
  2. Maybe Dusty is just going to let the internet tell him what to do. Hey, we can hope. 8)
  3. Well, we'll just get the essential cons out of the way so we don't have to beat the dead horse: possibility that Dusty will play him over Murton. Now, having said that, I don't really mind a look. He hits lefties a lot better than righties, here's his 3 year splits LH - .261 .314 .434 .748 RH - .235 .281 .407 .688 And he has a 180 more at bats against lefties in the last 3 years, so he's been used as a quasi lefty specialist. It's interesting that the team is bringing in outfielders who may still have a little gas left in them against lefties. Of course, they missed the boat in not getting Eli Marrero, who has killed lefties the last two seasons, and was willing to be a teams 3rd catcher to make a roster. I would have given him a big league deal, he's more of a sure thing than Grissom or Sierra.
  4. I'd imagine Walker is in the deal to make the money more even. Hate the trade, but if they're dead set on trading Walker and the alternative is Neifury, then whatever. But people are really looking way too much into what Lugo did last year. He may have a career .340 OBP, but he's only been above that TWICE in his career. That's what a career year will do for you. Judging by his career lines, the real Julio Lugo is a .275/.330/.400/.730 hitter at best. And a .330 OBP in the 2 hole isn't exactly gold. The only glimmer of hope I see is that last season his spike in production seems to be due to a reduction in strikeouts. 34 less than 2004, with more at bats! Maybe he's figured something out at 30 and will keep it up... If we do this trade, we absolutely have to sign him to an extension though, Jerome Williams is not someone you trade for a rental. If he can put up a .280/.350/.400/.750 line, I can live with it
  5. I still say just say no to Lugo, overrated. Keep Walker and let Cedeno play beside him. Huff? Oh yeah. You wouldn't even have to seriously undercut Murton's playing time to do it, Huff can play 1st & 3rd. Give him say 10 starts over the season at 1st, 15 over the season at 3rd, 20 in right field to keep Jacque from ever facing a lefty (yes, he's a lefty and hits righties better, but he's damn sure was better against lefties from 2002 to 2004 than Jacque), and then let him split righties with Murton. Should give both right at 100 starts I'd wager. The great thing about Huff is the insurance he provides. God forbid DLee or Aram goes down, he can cover it.
  6. Nevermind (theoretically, assuming that the statements made that Neifi is seen as a bench player are true) the fact that we are not talking about exchanging Cedeno for Lugo, we're talking about exchanging Walker for Lugo. No thanks, Todd Walker will outperform Lugo, and I don't buy that his defensive shortcomings are worth it. Jebus, it isn't like Walker is 80, have someone work with him exclusively in spring training on his defense.
  7. Depends on if his hits .300 with 25 to 30 homers
  8. "Huh? I thought Andruw Jones wore #25" - Jim Hendry
  9. Man, what's with the hyperbole today? First ALL of the blame for Corey falls on the Cubs, and now Julio Lugo has been BAD throughout his career? 1) I already said that was a mistype and should have been "most" 2) Maybe bad wasn't the right word either, but I wouldn't call him good. In 2004 in MLB, his OPS ranked him 13th of 21 as far as shortstops go. He's going to give you a .330 or so OBP. Maybe I expect too much out of shortstops, but that's just not good enough for me, not for $5 million, and not when Cedeno will give you that for 300K
  10. Yikes, I did not realize how BAD Lugo has been throughout his career. Guess the freshest thing in my memory is the year he had last season. Just say no, I mean, career line of .276/.340/.400/.740, sorry, Cedeno can probably give you that. Jerry Hairston will probably come close. With the crap that's available, if you're going to get rid of Walker "'cause he don't catch da ball", then just dump him for prospects, ugh, hopefully the double play combo is Cedeno and Hairston.
  11. Well fine then. Macias could be a great 4th starter. You say THAT until Dusty remembers that Macias is supposed to be able to play anywhere, and pegs him in as the 4th starter in our rotation
  12. ALL of the blame? I think Corey was handled improperly, but it's become pretty clear that while Corey is a talented athlete, he's not a talented baseball player. I also must admit I was confused by Wheel's post: To me, all of the blame lays with the Cubs organization Corey certainly shares some of the blame for never getting what his coaches were trying to tell him So which is it? Yeah yeah yeah, "all" should have been "most", lol
  13. You say that until Cedeno struggles and we trade value to the White Sox for Macias...
  14. To me, all of the blame lays with the Cubs organization, because we'll never know what he could have been with proper progression. Sorry, when the kid hit .261 at AA and was fast becoming the human strikeout machine, he should have had to repeat AA the next season, maybe with a promotion to AAA later on if he figured things out. But you damn well bet in 2001 he should have stayed in the minors. 2002? You would have thought the team would have seen his .284 on base percentage as something he should work out in the minors. But instead of working out his problems in small towns riding a bus to games (aka, being humbled), he was supposed to work those out in the bright lights of the big city. Sorry, but just about any 22 year old rushed from the minors and brought to the Chi is going to flop. Corey certainly shares some of the blame for never getting what his coaches were trying to tell him, but what is he supposed to do? Every year from 2000 keep repeating "i'm not ready, please demote me"?
  15. so, what are the odds Gremlin leaves the Cubs, and suddenly hits .300 with a nice OBP? 50/50? Stupid freaking curse...
  16. Personally, I would have kept Corey, told him he was competing against Matt Murton for the left field job, and seen what he could do. Really, he isn't going to disappoint worse than last year. His value will not go down anymore. All you've done is took a 3 or 4 million dollar gamble that you can get something out of him. It isn't like our return would have been any worse if he didn't outplay Murton for the job. Without building up his value, we were going to get a prospect or two from some teams top 25 list. Best case scenario without showcasing him. But, if you keep him, and maybe even bring in a special spring training coach just for him, he might break out, and you either have a very tradeable commodity, or a starting outfielder on your team. If we would have gotten talent back that helped us in the upcoming season, I'd appreciate the trade more. But since we didn't, unless you really need the money for something else, you've shortchanged yourself. We held a card, and we played it too soon :?
  17. Hmm, Nate Spears is intriguing. Suppose he'll play second for the Jaxx this season. Anyway, at least we got something and opened up another 4 mil in payroll, not that we, you know, have anything to spend it on :(
  18. Here's something from the crazy idea department. The Blue Jays are pretty much confirmed to be shopping Koskie. He's had two down years in a row, and will be 33 next season. Has played 3rd for most of his career, but he did play 25 games in RF during the '99 season. Owed 11.5 million over 2 years, the Jays were willing to eat 3 of that to send him to the Twins, they refused. Like Jones, he should never ever face a left handed batter. He pounds righties. On this team, I could see him sharing at bats against righties with Murton in left field. Then he could be used to spell Aram (what a concept! try to keep him healthy...). Heck, I could see him spelling Derek Lee assuming he can catch the ball well enough. Add on top of that he'd be the primary masher off the bench when there's a righty pitching. The cost would be minimal, prospects and taking on $8 mil in payroll over the next two years. And he could probably be used as trade bait at midseason if a team has a 3B need. Not a great acquisition or one that will really put us over the top, but if he could be gotten cheaply (maybe you could get the Jays to eat more salary), it might not be a bad choice.
  19. No thanks, I'm more than happy with Michael. Hopefully he's spending the winter brushing up on his defensive game.
  20. I'd make the deal for Kennedy. I think he'll match Todd at worst in production and play a little better defense. Ibanez would make us better, but I'd prefer to keep Williams. Try to slip them Rusch instead.
  21. Well, personally I'm just against not aquiring talent becuase our manager is a moron. Address the real problem, the manager, by firing him. Even Grissom's career line against lefties is a lot better than what Jacque Jones would ever put up. Jones by himself = .750 OPS. Jones + somebody to face lefties = .800 OPS. We don't have 50 points to spare... Of course, to whoever asked what Grissom gives that Hairston doesn't, just look at Jerry's career splits. Interestingly enough, he hits righties better than lefties.
  22. At this point I'm cool with inviting anyone who might catch fire to spring training.
  23. I'll just repeat, once again, his line against left handed pitching in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. 2003 - .364/.399/.657 2004 - .315/.356/.577 Now, I still fail to understand why it is a bad idea to see if this player can still mash left handed pitching, when our starting right fielder put this line up against them last year. .201/.247/.370 154 ABs, Jones got 154 AB's against lefties last year. Now, if Grissom makes the team, and gets 100 AB's against lefties instead of Jones, he is worth the small amount of cash we'll pay him. Now, of course, if something stupid goes on like he takes considerable time away from Murton, then we have a problem.
  24. 43) Neifi Perez traded for...SUPERMAN. Superman puts up the following numbers. .525/.765/.999/1.764. Sadly, Dusty bats Superman 8th, because he don't have speed. That speedy kid The Flash bats leadoff instead, batting .200/.200/.100/.300, while stealing a base everytime he gets on base. 32 to be exact
