  1. I can't imagine Floyd even playing in the NL at this point. Exactly. There's no reason why the Cubs Management should even bother looking at Floyd. Not sure if I can agree with that. We need a fourth outfielder who is capable of starting for a few weeks if a corner outfielder went on the 15 day DL. I'm of the mind that, in a worst case scenario, Murton could handle right field for a few weeks, sliding Floyd over to left. While you could say that Pie would be that insurance, if he isn't ready to be in the bigs by then anyway I'd rather not stunt his growth. Floyd is perfect because he's literally good for a couple weeks, before he pulls something and is out for a few himself, ha. It just depends on the contract. A million bucks is nothing to this team and Floyd would be well worth it. Even better if you could get a non guaranteed contract so we could test him out in spring, and if he's obviously done with, release him. Even a million bucks guaranteed doesn't keep us from doing that.
  2. I think Cal was a first ballot hall of famer, and I think that Robin Yount should have been one too. I'll never get the "only two can go in each year" mentality. These voters do realize they're allowed to vote for up to ten players for a reason don't they? Perhaps there needs to be a re-eduation on the system from MLB. Probably just makes me mad because there are enough "only 2" voters that they kept Goose Gossage and Jim Rice out this year. Had they gone in the odds would have skyrocketed for Hawk. Now, he'll just be third place, barely missing next year. And no chance for a while after that.
  3. I'm sure there was a time in the 60's and even 70's that a player might have took some and not even really known it. I'd imagine just about any MLB pot of coffee was "leaded". A lot of the more naive players probably just thought it was some damn good coffee, lol.
  4. Hell, I'm not even convinced that Floyd could pass a physical at this point to sign the contract. I mean, Floyd only put up a .731 OPS last season, inuries nonwithstanding. In '05, Richard Hidalgo was at .705 and he could barely get a minor league deal with an invite. Floyd should have next to no market. A million plus incentives would be perfect. He could be the 4th outfielder, and take the righties who he could excel against but Murton might have trouble with. Collect 200 to 250 at bats or so.
  5. Pretty good signing on a minor league deal. He sucked after we dumped him, but could still bounce back to respectable numbers.
  6. Rotoworld says he's signed.... With the Mets! Woo hoo! http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=MLB&id=2809
  7. I'd assume most of the others implicated were smart enough to fess up. Sure, Giambi took heat for being honest, but he isn't looking at jail time for perjury.
  8. Still, I think we're much more likely to come up with a list of MLB High Times subscribers than we are a definitive list of who was juicing at the time. Most smart players who thought they could survive in MLB without them for a season probably went off, hoping that the survey percent would be below the testing threshhold and the problem would go away.
  9. Who cares. It was an age where the players were basically told "just don't go above this percent, and this will all go away!" and they still couldn't do it. I imagine you'll have your "duh" violators, some surprises, both in who is on and who is not on the list. It might be interesting to hear how many pitchers there are on the list. But really, meaningless. It was open season with no regulation for so long, what do I care. I care about them being clean now. Get a freaking way to test for HGH.
  10. Surprised nobody has brought up Veal. He seems like the kind of guy who would be right up the Braves alley. They'd mold him into gold. Jacque, one of Howry or Eyre, Veal, and, say, Sean Marshall. What if that was the price? Check please...
  11. How about a threesome? Cubs give - Jacque Jones, Mark Prior, and Cesar Izturis Cubs get - A Rod Yankees give - A-Rod, Randy Johnson Yankees get - Mark Prior, Miguel Tejada Baltimore give - Miggy Baltimore gets - Jacque Jones, Randy Johnson A-Rod to short, sign Floyd for 4th Outfielder, pray to all that is holy that our rotation survives.
  12. Won't happen, but sign him up Jimbo. Soriano to center, Jones and Sosa to right, Murton in left. Big potential there. If he sucks, no loss, he can then officially retire a Cub with some dignity.
  13. Would we prefer to have no depth at the corner outfield position? Because that worked so well with First Base last year... If it's a one year deal, there's no harm nor foul. If he sucks, nothing to stop Hendry from just DFA'ing him.

  15. Hmm, with Alfonso Soriano batting leadoff and winding up on 2nd base 80 times a year, Murtons line against righties would look damn good in the 2 hole. I could see a lot of those doubles and steals turning into runs on strong hits. Well, could have seen. Hopefully Floyd surprises.
  16. Here's hoping we're sitting here in August talking about Jason Marquis, MVP candidate! **keeps sipping on the kool-aid**
  17. Not shocking, we knew this was coming. Not sure how I feel about it. He can be a killer against right handed pitchers, but he can't stay healthy. Not that I'm complaining there since I want Murton to get a lot of at bats.
  18. 1 year, 15 million, with 5 incentives based on games played, first one kicking in at 130 games. With the way we backloaded all our contracts, we could afford it. Man can dream...
  19. Actually, to me, having Soriano at the top of the order makes the #2 hitter even more important. 82 times last year Soriano was on second base, 41 times by a double, 41 times by a steal. That means you need someone in the 2 hole who can get hits, because any decent hit with Soriano on second is going to be a run. DeRosa might be that guy, if 2006 is something he can repeat. Cesar, no doubt, is not.
  20. Save a miracle, such as Cesar magically channeling Omar Vizquel and becoming good at a late age, him batting second is the stupidist idea since putting Neifi Perez there. Especially when you consider you could dump Cesar, put Theriot in at short, and then putting the shortstop 2nd isn't such a stupid idea. I sincerely hope that if Cesar sucks, they give it some thought.
  21. Nuh uh. He'll be sitting on the bench. Cliff Floyd will be playing and batting fifth or sixth. :(
  22. Have to respect him having the sense to get out when the time was right. Most players would have listened to bad advice and gotten their shoulder cut up just for the hope of stretching their career out another couple seasons. I think Radke made a good decision here. He wasn't going to be a Hall Of Fame pitcher no matter what, so why not take your money and stay home with your family?
  23. No doubt. Jacque and Craig Wilson platooning in right will equal, at worst, an .850 OPS, with a realistic chance of being higher. For under $10 million, with only a two year commitment (for Jacque, that is, can't see Wilson getting more than two). Sign me up. Soriano in center, Murton in left with Ward taking any starts against guys who just destroy right handed batters.
  24. Wouldn't it be great if we could sign Drew on the cheap because Boston balked and everyone else was scared or had spent their money? And wouldn't it even be greater if he surprised us and had a relatively healthy season? :D
  25. For once Hendry is doing the right thing here and waiting it out when it's obvious there's nobody else bidding. We might wind up with him for next to nothing. Too bad he didn't do that with Marquis.
