  1. Agreed, so long as it isn't Barrett (why downgrade from above average offense at one position which is harder to get, it's just a lateral move) i'd love to have Vernon Wells. But if the price is already up to Ervin Santana, no thanks. I wouldn't even think about topping that with Hill. If we could put together a bigger package, do it. Dempster plus Eyre would be my starting offer.
  2. Honestly? It is very possible that Durham could be 5M better than Derosa. Durham's career #s .281/.354/.443 106 OPS+ Derosa's career #'s .273/.331/.404 90 OPS+ That's and 80 point difference in OPS for their career. Even if you think Derosa will continue to put up close to his Texas numbers, they are barely (16 points) better than Durham's average season, which Durham himself has surpassed in all but 1 of his last 8 seasons. While you are probably right, it's mildly comforting that the above comparison isn't quite as black and white as it normally is. Since DeRosa (supposadly) made big time changes to his approach in Texas. I've even seen it said that (supposadly) watching him and Michael Young swing the bat looks like the same person. Not sure I buy that, but it excites me to see him play and give him a chance.
  3. I would take Carlos Lee at even 5/50, assuming he agrees to seriously work on his weight and conditioning. In a few years even if we regreat it we wouldn't have too much trouble trading him if we ate a few dollars. Frank Thomas just got 9 million a year.
  4. Didn't see a thread anywhere else, feel free to close if I'm wrong. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061117&content_id=1742561&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc Glad to see them going hardcore on Prior. He's going to need it.
  5. Puts Cotts in rotation. Let him do fairly well, but need to go because of a logjam of pitching, after Mark Prior bounces back to '03 form, and Wade Miller bounces back to pre-injury form. Trade him to the Yankees for A-Rod. BRILLIANT! **this post brought to you by daydreaming**
  6. If payroll is damn near unlimited, just trade off Dempster, let Wuertz, Howry, etc., battle it out for closer at the start of the season, and then sign Eric Gagne to a rehab deal, send him down to Iowa, and tell him to call us when he's ready.
  7. I give Drew the choice between the following deals 2/32 4/52 Sign whichever one he takes.
  8. Same thing I'd do, probably. Openly weep like a child! :D
  9. Exactly what I was thinking Hoops. Arthritic Piece of Crap + O'Malley and call it a done deal!
  10. It was stated in another thread that our limit was 5, and we don't know if Aram counted against that or not. We could, at worst, sign Drew, Soriano, and still sign one A/B pitcher.
  11. Per the Philadelphia Daily News 4/52 Jim. 4/52
  12. Still, he put up a season long 1.95 ERA in the AL. No injuries as far as I know. So surely he can come to the NL and settle back in for another good season. :D
  13. Interesting that he was a starter in the minors. Perhaps taking Glendons longman role?
  14. True, if it winds up being Eyre traded, we're fine. Wuertz is ready to step up to a larger role. Ohman is our LOOGY. Cotts would be a fine back of the bullpen guy.
  15. Aardvark was good last year, but i'm not sure he had much trade value. Cotts 2005 would make anyones eyes pop out. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have more trade value. Especially to a team that wanted a left handed pitcher. Perhaps he's going to take Eyre or Ohmans place in another deal.
  16. Say wha? Insane deal just looking at it. Aardsma hadn't done too much yet, but Cotts had an incredible 2005. 2006 sucked. Hmm, anyone follow the Sox better and can give us the dibs on this guy?
  17. No way they're trading Barrett except for a big time upgrade. Hogwash. Manny? Yes please, trade whichever prospects it takes.
  18. We get 4, so it all comes down to weather Aram counts or not. Drew would be one, Soriano would be one, and Lilly/Padilla would be the other. The bench would be filled out with guys under our control and non A/B's.
  19. Plus even the best coaches will have that one player that just doesn't click with them. Maybe he was doing what he was told but the things he was told led to a 6+ ERA. And there's no way he gets a big contract. Nobody is going to judge him by the wins because he played for the World Champions. Even though they were barely .500 everyone will attribute the win column to that and look at his 6+ ERA. He gets 2/6, 2/8 at most.
  20. Something tells me that payroll is going way past 120. I'm hoping in the end they just tell Jimbo to keep it under the luxary tax. JD Drew, 4/56 Alfonso Soriano, 5/75, with sixth year option that can either vest, or if it isn't and we refuse it, there's a $5 million dollar buyout. Kei Igawa. Win the posting. Iwamura should have been worth more than the Devil Rays paid. I think we can win this one. Julio Lugo. 2/12 Dump Cesar. Package Eyre for a starter from Cleveland, eat his contract if it gets you a better player. Let Jacque know he's going to either be a super-sub, getting a lot of starts against righties to rest everyone, or he'll be traded. Do what he wants, we don't need any crybabies. And if it turns out Aram doesn't cost us an A/B signing, or we pass the arbitration deadline and there's someone left, one more starter please. Lilly or Padilla please. Oh, and Marquis to just really throw stuff at the wall until something sticks. Lineup would be deadly. Ton of pitching depth Zambrano Hill Igawa Padilla/Lilly Westbrook/Lee Miller Prior young guys I'm not sure if I'm still under the luxary tax.
  21. No need to hold off, the contract can be done so that he has to be added to the 40 man before spring training or some date in the future, ala Miller. One year deal with a mutual option for a second year at the same price. 2/5 or so. If lady luck finally looks our way, we could have a solid #3 for a bargain. If not, it isn't that much wasted. Much better than past projects. Dempster was a question mark even when healthy. Williamson was good in the past but no sure thing. Miller has a big injury question mark. Marquis seems more a mental issue than anything else. Reunite him with his buddy we just signed, maybe he keeps his brain working for a few years. :D
  22. Five years, 75 million, six year $15 million club option with a $5 million buyout. Swallow that down and lets win a World Series...
  23. Honestly, I'm more concerned with what contract he will get. If it's low, okay, it's not a bad gamble. It just seems guys that sign early in the FA process, don't sign for low dollars. Maybe they do when they get a call from Uncle Lou saying "yeah, i've got about ten more people to talk too, hurry up and decide if you want to go to the World Series this year or not..." :D
  24. I'm, uh, not seeing the problem with Marquis. Yes, he sucked the past two seasons. But his '04 and '05 are perfectly acceptable at the back of our rotation. If he's figured things out, give him a chance to prove it. Who better to mathmatically eliminate the Cardinals from the post season than one of their (former) own. Then give me two of Igawa, Lilly, and Padilla, and we'll be in better shape.
