  1. Interesting I suppose. If he's turned the corner late, he might be one of the better offensive second basemen in the league. If not, he might not be worth much.
  2. How about a rewrite of "Back In Black"? "Back In Blue" Back in blue Healthy too I guess you know it sucks to be you Three outs No doubt Sit your ass back down I'm throwing heat because it's flying by you Forget a bat, you better bring two I got nine strikes, and lives Use every one before you trot around 'Cause I'm back Yes, I'm back Well, I'm back Yes, I'm back Well, I'm back, back I'm back in blue Yes, I'm back in blue Back in the swing King of my thing You're a fire cracker, I'm a WMD I'm in the game And you're in shame Need to catch up, but you don't have a prayer On your best night you'd never hit it Just take the out, don't get embarrased Clocked at nine nine, feeling fine Might see me yawn with the game on the line 'Cause I'm back Yes, I'm back Well, I'm back Yes, I'm back Well, I'm back, back I'm back in blue Yes, I'm back in blue
  3. Well, if we trade Matt Murton, we better be trading 2nd half Matt Murton for equal value. Else we're selling ourselves short. I highly doubt Matt goes though. However, I'd trade him for a legit 1 or 2 starter in a heartbeat. Can always just sign Alou and Bonds and hope they make 162 starts combined.
  4. Offer him 5/75, with a sixth year that vests should he actually play up to the contract. I'll take my chances, and it's slightly below market value, in this stupid market. Presuming he will play center.
  5. How about Soriano instead, who will not cost much more, and could conceivably play Center and not mess with Murton. Or even shift Jacque to center if need be.
  6. Because Mike Piazza is available? **ducks for cover**
  7. Doesn't Hudson's ERA from last year scare you though? 4.86 It does, but by the same token I also have at least mild hope that he'll have another year or two at his previous level. And if, say, it only took prospects we aren't sure will pan out anyway, I'm all for it. At worst, Tim Hudson will be an adequate fifth starter innings eater next season. And if we get to a point in our rotation where Mark Prior bumps Tim Hudson to the bullpen, I'm liking our chances. Of course, the more I think about it the more I'd like Atlanta to eat money if we took the contract. Because I suppose any of the "b-tier" starters like Padilla, Batista, Lilly, etc., would be about as likely to put up a good year as Hudson. So he'd have to make sense financially.
  8. I'd like to see us bring home Hudson from the meetings. Today if possible. If we can sell it to Atlanta as a major move to free up enough payroll to bring in both Glavine and Maddux next year, they might bite. Sean Marshall and change? Didn't Marshall and Maddux strike up a bit of a rapport this year, or am I thinking of someone else? I'd also find out what the price is for Manny.
  9. We'll see. We always tend to undervalue our own talent, being the well reasoned pessimists that we are. Who would have thought that we'd get an actual return for Neifi Perez last year? I'm sure the "gold glove fielder" aspect has value, and just by including Cesar the Orioles would be able to play it as a "swap of two former all stars". Obviously Cesar doesn't get it done by a mile by himself. But perhaps Cesar Izturis, Sean Marshall, and a group of prospects starts the conversation. It would be great, though. Having Tejada and Durham up the middle would leave plenty of starts to keep Ryan Theriot producing. And darn it if he plays above expectations and starts a controversy at second base. Just sucks to have talent to deal :D
  10. Well, A-Rod can't say "uh, reunite me with Uncle Lou and I'll take a trade", because that kills the Yankees bargaining posture and he likely has enough loyalty to at least want to leave New York with them getting a good return. I could see a deal happen, but it's going to have to be a three way deal because I'm not sure we have the parts to make it happen otherwise. Such as, perhaps a deal that sends a bunch of farmhands to Florida for Willis, and then Willis gets dealt in a deal for A-Rod.
  11. Also don't forget Ebay. I was able to get a Majestic Sandberg off of there about six months ago for very reasonable, like, $60 I seem to recall.
  12. Well, this one is a positive. Very loyal by Wood, he could have gotten more money guaranteed elsewhere.
  13. Well, 6 years, 90 million is about as far as most sane people would go with Aramis Ramirez, but Hendry is a failure no matter how you look at it. Ramirez should have been traded mid-year at the latest. Juan Pierre too, while we're at it.
  14. So, which ticking time bomb do we bet our lives on now? Nomar? Huff? Moore/Theriot/Fontenot/anyone else we have in the minors? :?
  15. I guess the question is, where does Hendry go from here? Roll his life and give Zambrano to Steinbrenner for a package with A-Rod in it? Then bid serious cash for the other Japanese dude, and give Jason Schmidt a blank check. And probably Miguel Batista or Padilla too. And still have to add a bat. Good luck Jimbo.
  16. Jesus I am not buzzed enough for this shizit... If the Cubs let Ramirez walk, what are they going to do, sign Aubrey Huff and pray for a freaking miracle? Again, I want to know what we would have had to have paid to get Aram to sign before the deadline. Unless it's A-Rod level, I'm going to be damn pissed that we didn't take the offer. This is on you Hendry. You just let the franchise slip away. Now you have to pursue him as aggresively as you do Soriano, and pay whatever it takes to sign him.
  17. You're right. The situation we're in, about to concede to the free agent market what will be the best talent on it, you can't pass up paying top market value if you have too. 7 @ 15? Yes. If that's what it takes.
  18. I'll say this, if Aramis isn't signed, we need to be told two things by Jim Hendry. What his final offer was, and what the final offer from Aramis was. If he doesn't, or the answer to the questions don't make sense, he should be fired immediately.
  19. Sigh, two hours and change until the inevitable. I for one don't plan to be feeling any pain when it happens. Smoke 'em if you got 'em guys.
  20. Well then, how about in the sale The Tribune gets exclusive rights to the things they would want for the next 20 years or so. So long as the financial numbers are fair to the new owner, doubt it would be a huge stumbling block. That way the Tribune can save face that they kept a piece of the pie for themselves for the next twenty years.
  21. Nevermind that you know Boras is going to demand a three year deal that releases him to free agency when it's up. If (key word there) the posting fee really is $35 million or more, you're easily looking at a 3/60 or worse contract. I know he'll be good, but I'd personally rather offer 3/45 to Schmidt and extend Zambrano, if the price is that high.
  22. And with Scott Boras as the agent, I wouldn't blink to see the total contract wind up being 5/100, when you include the posting fee. [expletive] insane. Pay Schmidt whatever it takes instead.
  23. Maybe that's why it's taking so long, the Seibu owners had to get their eyes surgically put back in their sockets...
  24. Of course, losing out on Matsuzaka probably means that one of Zito or Schmidt is going to New York, unless they do the Clemitte combo.
  25. yeah, .285/.334/.499/.833, while not setting the world on fire, is not subpar. And .303/.358/.528/.886 against righties is far from subpar. We don't need to dump Jacque (though he needs extra time with the fielding instructors) to be good next year. We just need a platoon partner.
