  1. I would be fine with King or Imai, Suarez(RP) and then a right handed bat who can play 1st, 3rd and DH. Maybe if they went with King for $20M a year, Fairbanks for $9M a year they can get someone like the 29 yr old Japanese third baseman.
  2. Abrams only has 3 years of control. And didn’t the Nats sent him down last year for disipliary reasons? I seem to remember something going on with him. Is him at 3rd base really that large an upgrade over Shaw? Maybe short term it is, but losing Shaw who has 6 years of control and Wiggins who also has 6 years of control and the adding 2 outfielders who also have 6 years of control left is too much.
  3. Guess it is possible. But he would have to make the 26 man roster all season. Not very likely.
  4. Phillies were said to be discussing non tendering Bohm. They have been trying to get rid of him for years. Now signing Schwarber they make be looking to dump some salary. Obviously if he cost anything if real value a trade isn’t happening. And it was just an example of a smallish trade, anyway.
  5. Me neither. But he could be a right handed bat to DH and also play some first base. I said it could be a small trade. I consider adding Bohm as the top RH bench bat/part time corner infielder, part time DH a small trade.
  6. If this is true it could mean the Cubs trade that may happen soon will be for a bat. To be fair, Rogers said a trade soon. He didn’t say a major deal. Maybe it is for Bohm or someone in that level. Then they sign Imai or King later. Even if Rogers is correct it doesn’t have to be a major deal.
  7. That is a lot for 2 years of Gore(one of which could be shortened by a lockout) and Abrams.
  8. Right. If they added a pitcher this year they would have that pitcher, Steele, Horton and probably Wiggins in the rotation starting after the lock out. A decent start to a rotation. That is why I do think they add someone. I think they will spend $40M+ this off season. So they have money for a pitcher, a bat and a pen arm. Not sure they can get all of that via FA and stay at $40M. Maybe Imai or King, Fairbanks or Finnegan and then Okamato. They might have to extend beyond $40M. Going all FA that is about as good as I can see them doing. And by doing this they keep all their young bats. Shaw to play second in ‘27 and Cassie, Mo, Long or Alcantara in the line up. Fill the rest with FA.
  9. I didn’t check out the FA list next year. Is it better if you don’t count all the Cubs on that list? I believe they will explore deals for a bat, but in the end not end up with Bregman, Suarez(thankfully) or Bichette. I also doubt the younger Japanese player. But I wouldn’t be shocked if they ended up with the other Japanese 3rd baseman or traded for someone like Bohm. They can keep Shaw in this case. In fact if they did trade for Bohm, Shaw would probably still start at 3rd. Bohm would be a guy to hit left handed pitchers, play 3rd occasionally and also cover first when they sit Busch. I do, however, expect a decent pitcher coming this off season. Whether it be via trade (Gore, Cabrera, Ryan, etc…..) or FA (Imai or King), I think they will spend to get a MOR/TOR starter. With Imanaga, Tailon and Boyd leaving next year, they need some stability after this year. They won’t do it all in one year.
  10. I think if you sign Bregman then trade Nico you take a step backwards. You aren’t getting a pitcher to plug into the rotation for Nico. I don’t agree with Bregman replacing Nico. He either signs here and the Cubs use young bats for a young TOR starting pitcher or, as Jason said, they extend the payroll this year and sign King. Worry about 27 when it comes.
  11. I think IF they end up with Bregman it is because they know they can trade Shaw to get a starting pitcher in a trade. I think you said before that but appears they are angling to add a pitcher and a bat with one in trade and one via FA. And I agree with you on that. I I see no reason to move Nico if they got Bregman.
  12. I didn’t see anything either way on how they plan on acquiring a pen arm. I did see something about the Phillies possibly moving Strahm. And I know they wouldn’t mind moving Bohm. But if they didn’t get a pen arm in trade, maybe just Bohm is the trade bat. Again, not exciting. But if it was him, Imai and Fairbanks and/or Keller that wouldn’t be a bad off season. Especially since they wouldn’t have to give up any top prospects for Bohm.
  13. Not sure who the hitter would be. Bohm? Maybe a Bohm and Strahm package from Phillie? Not exactly an exciting bat, but does help the pen. And uses as a right handed platoon, would be in.
  14. A payroll boost would be nice and does work next year. They can easily get under it the following year if they need to. And with new CBA they might not need to.
  15. 🤷maybe. I believe there is more to it than that. But if there are people who believe the earth is flat, I guess there can be people who believe all reports are just fiction.
  16. So reporters would assume they would rather replace Shaw’s bat at 3rd, instead of getting a quality bat anywhere that can DH and take Cassie or Mo spot in the line up? Again, I am not arguing what the Cubs are doing. I am saying if the reports are they are looking at Bregman, Suarez or one of the Japanese 3rd baseman, that is not reporters assuming that is obviously what they would do. That is reporters reporting on what they have heard they are doing.
  17. My argument isn’t “why would the Cubs be looking at a 3rd baseman over an outfielder”? It is why would reporters assume that is the case But really the reason for the response is the second part of your post. What is all smoke and mirrors to convince Miami the Cubs are about to pull off a trade with Seattle?
  18. That isn’t the point. The point is reporters aren’t just spouting out names because they assume the Cubs want to add a 3rd baseman. Names are out because the Cubs are looking at 3rd baseman. We haven’t heard about outfielders because the Cubs aren’t talking about them.
  19. If the Cubs added a big bat at 3rd he would be taking Shaw’s spot in the line up. If they added a big bat in the outfield he would be replacing Cassie. Again, why would reporters assume the Cubs want to replace Shaw but not Cassie?
  20. It’s not. Reporters aren’t assuming what the Cubs are looking for. They might not end up with anyone they are being said to be interested in. But this isn’t just guessing at what the Cubs might do.
  21. Why would they go after a 3rd baseman if they have Shaw but not go after an outfielder because they have Cassie. That doesn’t make any sense. I have reservations about the Cubs actually getting a 3rd baseman, but I doubt it is strictly an assumption by reporters.
  22. He would be my target.and if Shaw is more valuable, maybe the deal is expanded to add a marlins pen arm. Maybe the Cubs even it up with a spare (Assad) pitcher or a proper minor leaguer to even the deal.
  23. I think Ryan and Gore have the same thing going against them. With 27 in question is trading Shaw for either really a good idea? Yiu might only get 1 year out of them. One reason I like Cabrera better. At least he comes with 3 years of control. Do the Angels need a 3rd baseman? How would Shaw for a Soriano and Detmer look? Who adds and what is needed. Cubs get a starung pitcher with upside but also a lefty pen arm.
  24. Agreed. And to add to this, the people complaining about not running early or not running on 4th down with a yard to go at the end of the game are the same people who would complain if he ran 5 of 6 plays and went nowhere early, or ran up the middle and got stopped on 4th down late in the game. Everyone watching a game think they know better. Some feel the need to vent to show how smart they are. Johnson is the best offensive mind we have had in Chicago. No, I don’t agree with all his plays. But I don’t pretend to know more than him either. Even the 4th down play. Caleb could have taken it for the first down and got out of bounds. He also had Moore right in front of him for a 1st down. Had he done either, Bears might have won and no one would say a word about the “bad call” Johnson made.
  25. horsefeathers. Had Caleb thrown a TD pass on the last play you wouldn’t be calling it a bad call. That is just after the fact horsefeathers. Also, not running on 3rd and 11 from the 41 isn’t a bad call. Sure, he should have ran more early, but that doesn’t qualify as a bad play call. He scripted the first several plays. It didn’t work. Thats all there is to it. Judging coaches because something doesn’t work will result in every coach having numerous bad plays called.
