    I agree this is one example of something he should have done in the off season. Maybe also talk to the Marlins about Cabrera or Alcantara too. In the off seeing the price wouldn’t have been as high. He and TR TOGETHER put themselves in a bad spot at the trade deadline. So not blaming him for not making a deadline deal is probably a correct opinion. But you can blame him for putting himself and the team in a position to have to overpay. And that’s what I blame him for.

    Giving Jed a pass on not adding a starting pitcher at the deadline is not the same as giving him a pass on now not having enough starting pitching. He went about his business in the off season with the thought he had a lot of money at the deadline and enough prospects to add whatever he had to add. That was a serious miss. He is who made that determination. He should have realized the market would be hard. They saved Bellinger money so they can add whatever they needed. So why not do it in the off season. I thought originally the Bellinger deal had Warren coming back. Warren threw 160+ innings this year in the Yankees rotation. That didnt happen because TR wanted the Yankees to eat more of Bellinger’s contract. Again, supposedly to have that money at the deadline. Had Jed insisted on Warren and the Yankees not take as much of Bellinger’s contract on, the Cubs would have had another starter. He wasn’t great. But he was ok. And he could have taken some innings from Boyd and maybe even Horton. Maybe they would have been healthier in the playoffs. Jed messed up in the off season. And that’s why we are at least 1 pitcher short.

    Not sure why I am now a professor, but I would have there chances more like 40%. But I do understand you suggesting 30%, I just think any team that gets to the final 4 has better than a 30% of beating any other team. . Especially so, if that series goes 5 games. As you did say, however, anything can happen.

    One sentence you say realistically neither the Cubs or the Brewers can beat the Dodger or Phillies and then the next sentence you say it is baseball, so anything can happen. So which is it? Personally I think because it is baseball whoever wins this series has a realistic chance of going to the WS. Not 50/50, but not that unrealistic either.

    Letting Jed off the hook for not making a deadline deal is not the same as letting off the hook for the lack of another option as a starting pitcher. He is the guy responsible for them being so short of pitching options at the deadline. He should have know the costs would be ridiculous and made whatever move necessary in the off season. While I don’t blame him for not paying the prices needed, I do blame him for the entire situation. Based on who did get moved, IMO, Kelly shouldn’t of been who they traded for. I think he was cheaper than Bieber.

    I think it is an overreaction. Shaw shouldn’t be near the top of the line up. Maybe he should be on the bench. Maybe Swanson second. Nico, Swanson, Tucker, Seiya, Busch, Happ, Kelly, PCA, Castro?

    I blame him for forcing the Cubs into a situation where they needed pitching by not spending in the off season to add a better pitcher. But I don’t blame the FO for not paying the ridiculous prices wanted by teams dumping players.

    Nice to have a voice of reason and hope. Even when I don’t totally agree with you and think you, at times, shade opinions to slant the Cubs way, it is nice to see it anyway. And I usually do agree with you. 👍

    I get that. Especially considering how poorly he did on Saturday. My point was really in the Cubs thought process before the game, not after seeing how poorly he did. For the sake of argument, let’s say Nico makes the play and Boyd gets out of the first with 2 runs. He then goes 2 or 3 more innings of scoreless ball. Cubs still lose, maybe 5-3. Cubs then have the luxury of Boyd at Wrigley for game 4. If the Cubs thinking, prior to the start he had, was Boyd is going to get 2 starts in the series, I would think they would want one at Wrigley. Starting game one would make that possible.

    I agree with all of this, but to me that means he probably pitches only 3 innings and the Brewers use their pen. Cubs need to score at least 4 today and really wish it could be even more. They may need more.

    Before the first pitch is thrown I am going on record of agreeing with the Cubs to start Imanaga. Jason has made some really good points. He deserves to start this game and is the best option. I did not like Boyd in game one. I said it before the game as well. I did want Assad. But I realize he could have also been lit up and we would have Boyd going today. The one thing going Boyd in game 1 did was allow the Cubs to go Boyd in game 4, on normal rest. Had they held Boyd to today he would still be on the road and if he did pitch in game 5, that too would be in the road. For as much angst that Boyd has given us lately, he still has great numbers at Wrigley. If the Cubs could win this one I have a good feeling about Tailon on Wednesday. And like Boyd at home on Thursday.

    Actually the strike zone used by mlb when they go to the review had that pitch as a strike. I know the zone on tv and the announcers each had it as a ball, but had this been next year and had that pitch been challenged the strike call would have been confirmed. I do agree calling it a strike did change the inning.

    Sadly, he probably will still work a game behind the plate in the playoffs.

    Not even close to the same thing. And, it wasn’t a bad call. Umpires probably have 50 pitches a game that could go either way. Hoerner made less then 10 errors this year. Padres lost that series because their stars were 4 for 33. They didn’t hit. Cubs didn’t lose game one because of the error, but it definitely played a part in a disasterous start. Nico’s error is far less likely than a questionable strike called by an umpire.

    No, that is not it. You just take things over the top. One thing happens and you exaggerate it. You did it with a slump in August this year, you did it when Swanson made an error and you are doing it now. I didn’t agree with Boyd pitching. I said it before he threw his first pitch. Counsell thought otherwise. He didn’t get it right. But that doesn’t mean the other choices would have been much better. Doesn’t mean he lost the game for the team. He made a choice based on data the team had. He picked him out of all iffy choices.

    I leaned starting Assad. I am on record, prior to the first pitch he threw, of not liking the Boyd decision. But I do acknowledge it is a pick from a lot of bad choices. But as ID mentioned, no decision was a sign of waving the white flag. In baseball anything can happen. Counsell made a rational decision based on who he had and it needed up not working out well. No guarantee the other options would have worked either. So we move on and take the next one.

    But is that fair? I mean it is easy to say a decision was bad after it goes bad. Kind of like when a pitcher goes 6 innings and is at 80-90 pitches and is winning by a run. If he stays on and give up the lead people bitch that Counsell should have taken him out. Or it he is taken out and the pen blows the lead the same people will bitch that he should have left him in. And when it works nothing is said. Managers don’t have the luxury of hindsight. He picked Boyd from a collection of iffy choices. It didn’t work. Move on.

    If you are acknowledging that after the fact you are stating it was the wrong decision, based on results, I absolutely agree.

    That is the entire point. We are looking at it after the fact. And I didn’t like the idea of Boyd pitching. TBH, I am not entirely sure I like him pitching if there is a game 4. But no real obviously good choices.

    He threw 56 pitches on Tuesday. It was not irrational to think he could have pitched well on 3 days rest. I believe the though was give us 12’outs. Counsell wasn’t looking for a QS. After the fact that he pitched poorly it is easy to say it was a poor decision. As I have said numerous times now, and I believe looking at my post would inform this, I expected Assad. I believe I said 40% chance Assad, 30% Rea and 30% Soroka. It prior to the results, Counsell’s decision could have just as easily been fine. And, even this game, if Nico doesn’t make an error Boyd is out of the first with 2 runs scored. Maybe he rights himself and does get 9-12 outs. .
