  1. Not close, IMO. Going to hurt bad to trade for Alonso. Probably not worth it.
  2. As I said, starting him today was probably the move that made the most sense. I hoped maybe he worked out some issues. But now, they can’t start him again. I still think they have a decent chance of winning tonight. That isn’t the issue with me. I am talking about moving forward.
  3. I didn’t have much of an issue with him starting tonight. Tigers bad against lefties and Smyly did ok in a few relief appearances. Letting him start, I was hoping they worked with him between his last start and they figured something out. Apparently that was not the case. From this point on he cannot start.
  4. My vote would be Wicks. If he can handle the innings load then give him a shot. Cannot, under any circumstances, be Smyly again.
  5. Agreed. Can’t let him start. Bring up ANYONE. Wicks, Brown, Horton or start Wesnecki. Just can’t use Smyly. Maybe bring each of those other guys up for 2 starts and rotate them. I know they are worried about innings. But maybe give them major league innings and limit them in the minors. They have to do something.
  6. I don’t agree with this. If Smyly struggles they can bring in Rucker for multiple innings. He is back on the team. I doubt they let Smyly get hit around and not make a move. Now, if Rucker also gets hit he might have to take it a bit. At that point there is no use wasting pen arms in a lopsided game. But I don’t expect that. They have enough pen arms if they need to guard a lead. I expect that soon Boxberger and maybe Burdi are brought back. They need some additional pen arms.
  7. If we are looking for positives, I believe the homestand saw the Cubs with 5 quality starts. That isn’t much, but something.
  8. Anyone at this game? I am working as an honorary grounds crew worker before the game. Should be cool.
  9. Yep. No reason for Wisdom playing. That is on Ross. madrigal should be at 3rd with Candelario at 1st when a lefty pitches. This loss is on Ross. Even with the offense not hitting they could have won 3-2 if he played they right people. The fact he pinch hit Madrigal for Wisdom with a lefty pitching is proof enough Ross knows Wisdom shouldn’t be playing, yet he played him. Poorly managed and played game.
  10. I know. Just wishful thinking. Wicks might be a good option too.
  11. I know it is highly unlikely, but why not try Horton on Tuesday. Let him throw 75-80 pitches. He pitched yesterday. Threw 71 pitches. I know it is a lot to ask, but could he be worse than Smyly? They have controlled his inning a bit so he might be able to throw another 40 innings. Sometimes when yiu throw a guy into the deep end of the pool you find out they can swim. And if he can’t yiu go back to Smyly. His first 2 starts would be Detroit and then Pitt. I would like to see them try him.
  12. Gomes slugging around 525 with OPS areounf 840 against lefties. Why not Gomes?
  13. I think “well under” is an exaggeration. Is he playing a little under what they hoped? Sure, a little. But he is a 2 WAR now. A good stretch by him puts him back around the 12O OPS+ with a WAR over 3 for the year. It isn’t like he is having this terrible season.
  14. Well, I don’t even think they should trade Happ. And I know you like him too. That is why I don’t understand this conversation. But playing it out, if the Cubs do have this prospect knocking down the door to play the outfield and trading Happ to open that spot can also bring in a player at a position of need, I can see trading him. I just don’t see that prospect yet. I also don’t know if he will ever be there. Prospects flame out all the time. No need to worry about a spot at this point, and most likely not in the future. I am of the belief that if a prospect is good enough to play in the majors the team will find a spot.
  15. I mean, if they were to trade Happ why would it have to be for a prospect? Why not a baseball trade? Why not Happ, an everyday solid left fielder with 4 years on his contract, for a MOR starting pitcher who has some control left? I am not suggesting they do trade him. They could keep him or trade him, I am fine either way. I’m not fine with dealing for a prospect. Cubs need to dea prospects for players, not the other way around. Or, as I said, player for player. Also, stay away from those simulators. Makes for some crazy ideas because they work in the simulator.
  16. Hendricks ended up doing pretty well tonight. Like to see how many balls the Sox hit hard. Early runs were on weak contact. So much for him being toast and the Cubs needing 10 runs to win tonight.
  17. Lot of weak contact hits. At least 4 of the 5 hits were weak contact. Then when he got them to ground into a potential double play they hit it too soft to turn a DP. At least that was what happened the first 2 innings.
  18. I would think Assad as well. Then go Steele on Friday, Taillon on Saturday and Hendricks on Sunday. With Thursday off it isn’t a big deal. But they need him for his next start. They will need someone on Tuesday of course.
  19. What? Ian Happ is fine. He is hardly someone they can’t trade if they even wanted to trade. I am fine if they do trade him, but they don’t have to eat a contract to do it. I also doubt they would have to pick up most of Suzuki’s contract if they traded him. He hasn’t been great but he isn’t a black hole. I think you are being a bit over reactive here.
  20. If they brought Bellinger back I am ok with giving Morel a real shot at 3rd. I am one who still thinks Mervis will be the first baseman next year. I don’t think they should give him the job, but I think he will earn it. If he does, DH can go between any OF who is not PCA (hopefully he is in center next year), Mervis and Morel (when they want Madrigal at 3rd once in a while for defense. Otherwise, just let Morel play 3rd and Madrigal is a bench guy, strictly. And if Mervis falters, Bellinger goes to 2st, Madrigal 3rd and Morel DH. I don’t think they need to invest big on a 3rd baseman.
  21. Just giving him a day. They still have to rest guys once in a while.
  22. I disagree. Wesnecki is a starter. He has been groomed to be a starter. That is the Cubs intent for him. If he does go to the pen that is because he couldn’t figure out how to get lefties out. But to me, that doesn’t mean he is a reliever. He is only a reliever by default, in that case.
  23. I’m with you. Get in. Doesn’t matter if it is WC or division. For those who want the division, let me ask this question. If game 162 has the Cubs and Brewers tied for the division and both are in no matter what happens that game, would you start Steele or Stroman in that game or keep them for game 1 and 2 of the playoffs? This is assuming both are pitching well. For me, I wouldn’t pitch either. And I would be surprised if the Brewers started Burnes that gane as well. I think both teams would be fine just getting in.
