  1. So MLB's new golden child gives up 3 runs and 30 pitches in the first inning. This is a hell of a way to start the series
  2. So Bubic is injured for the rest of the year, the Royals also extended Lugo and Clase under investigation.. can't help but thinking that the price tag on the remaining guys has gone up significantly. Way too many buyers and not enough sellers..
  3. That's fair. This is just a gut feeling more than anything else, but I think his best days are in front of him. Whether it's a different delivery or arm angle, or even learning a new pitch.. It's hard not to watch guys like Palencia and PCA take such massive steps forward this year, and think that a guy like Assad wasn't primed to do the same thing if not for his injuries. Also agree that the Cubs absolutely have to find a TORP this deadline. Anything less than a major trade would be malpractice.
  4. What makes Taillon better? Assad has a higher average WAR, ERA, ERA+, and a slightly better FIP in their Cubs careers. Taillon is the definition of average, and years like this, that is even being generous. I also think Assad has way more upside as a 27 year old. I don't want Assad pitching a game 3 either, but I'd much rather see him throw some meaningful playoff innings than Taillon or Rea.
  5. But we've been saying that for 3 years with him. I agree that some regression might be on the surface.. but I also think there is a real chance that this is just who he is. Someone who minimizes damage because he keeps the ball in the park at a (usually) above average level.
  6. Assad is criminally underrated by the board.. every year he's been here he's had an ERA under 4, outpacing his FIP by a decent amount every year. This is also the best defense he'll get to play in front of. Now, is he ready to handle a starter's workload after such a long layaway. Probably not, but that's a different question. He's a good player. He's not only better than Rea, he's better than Taillon
  7. Brasier has been so good lately, just unfortunate that happened
  8. Ben can barely give them 3 or 4 decent innings these days, even that remains to be seen. He's the one young guy who's development (or lack thereof) has been pretty disappointing
  9. I wouldn't begrudge the Cubs at all if they consider Owen untouchable in a trade, given how he's raking. He's a massive insurance piece in case Tucker decides to leave. Heck, if they found a way to plug him into LF next year and keep Tucker, I think this team is set offensively for a while.
  10. I didn't have Long and Gallagher on my list. Basically every person I mentioned is a current cubs top 10 prospect. You think Ballesteros is a scrub? He will be a good big leaguer and he's near MLB ready. Ballesteros + Wiggins + Ben Brown and maybe even a 4th piece is a pretty damn competitive offer.
  11. I'd do it for Ryan. And the Cubs definitely have enough ammunition to get him without giving up Caissie. Wiggins, Ballesteros, Brown, Birdsell, Triantos, Hernandez - the Twins can pick 3 from that list and I think they'd walk away happy, so would the Cubs.
  12. This is kind of how I feel. I still am leaning towards getting Saurez because I fear that potential matchup against the Phillies trio of lefties in the playoffs. And it wouldn't be the worst thing for Shaw to learn behind a vet for half a season. But damn, is the kid making it a tough call with his play lately.
  13. I think they could roll with Shaw if they got Ryan/Gore and then go bargain shopping for a reliever. But I would still give them an A in that scenario. Shota, Boyd, Gore/Ryan, and Taillon is as good as any 4 in the NL except probably the Phillies and Dodgers.
  14. My eye test disagrees. Assad has 3 consecutive seasons with an ERA under 4, a feat that Cabrera might do for the first time this year, even though they are the same age and Cabrera has more big league experience. Assad has had a better career FIP and ERA+ than Cabrera going into this season. It also seems generally agreed upon that Assad is one of those guys who's ERA can outpace his FIP by a decent margin because he doesn't give up a lot of home runs (at least, until 2024, although I wonder how much his injury(s) that year played a part) A lot of pitchers have weird home/road splits. Kyle Hendricks dealt with that for a number of seasons his entire career. Yes, his baseball savant page will never compare to Cabrera, who has better stuff. But I'm all about results. I could get behind a Cabrera trade but to me, he's much more in that Assad/Taillon camp than he would be Shota/Steele/Boyd. For me, I think they need to get a true TORP. The opportunity is there.
  15. They definitely need a better bat off the bench. I've been all in on Eugenio Suarez for a while now but all of a sudden, Shaw is making me rethink my position
