  1. Marmol has 2 quality starts out of 5 overall starts. That's the fourth most quality starts on the team this year behind, not surprisingly, Z (13), Marshall (8), and Maddux (7). But those three have all made more starts than Marmol this year. I don't think Marmol has thrown too many pitches either. I think he should stay as long as he doesn't start to get routinely hit like Hill and Guzman did, neither of whom made a quality start this year at the ML level.
  2. Wow. Didn't realize we were that close to the Royals. Just checked the schedule and the Royals have won 4 in a row.
  3. You don't know what you've got unless you play them at the major league level. There is no better time to do this than during a lost season.
  4. Yeah, it's amazing that the Cubs finally didn't get completely shut down by a rookie. I was counting on that to happen. Capuano shut us out (which I expected) but I needed the rookie to shut us down (since it usually happens) and I figured Saturday (Dave Bush) and Sunday (Doug Davis) would be anyone's guess. We'll see how it plays out.
  5. By extrapolation Payton would have ended up with around 17200 yards. Doing the same thing for Jim Brown - 12 game schedule for his first 4 years and 14 game schedule for his last 5 - gives him around 15000 yards. As long as we are bringing up 14 game seasons, FYI O.J. theoretically would have ended up with almost 2300 yards in 1973. Just thought I would throw that one out there.
  6. Actually the low is 138 on June 23 with Cubs (Marmol) vs Twins (Santana)
  7. You get Insider if you subscribe to ESPN the magazine? Yep, you get Insider access if you subscribe. You also get a subscription if you pay for Insider access. The NBA draft and Hollinger info alone make it worthwhile for me. But I enjoy the NFL draft coverage and the more sabermetrically inclined baseball columnists too. Sweet. Thanks for the info. I'm going to sign up right now. Thank you ESPN the Magazine subscription.
  8. No posts for 16 minutes. This thread is hopping tonight.
  9. What difference would putting ARam third in the order make? None. ARam proved while Lee was out that his is incapable of carrying a team and needs another big bat in the lineup with him. The Cubs have batted Barrett behind Ramirez this year and that didn't help at all. He needs a healthy Lee in the lineup.
  10. Is he ever going to get back to being close to what he once was? This isn't going to hurt the Dodgers much because Gagne has only pitched 15.1 innings in 2005 and 2006 combined so they are used to not having him.
  11. But Dusty was on deck when Aaron hit #715. That has to mean something doesn't it? What...it doesn't?
  12. Agreed. Tinkering with a lineup is a necessity to give players the occasional day off. You also have to deal with injuries as well as slumps and hot streaks. Like you said, it's not a bad thing if done correctly. I don't agree that tinkering is good. I think adjusting is. Tinkering suggests you're just randomly testing guys in different spots. I don't like the idea of trying a kid in the 8 hole, then leadoff, then 6th, etc. It's one thing if you are flip flopping your 3 and 4 hitter for some valid reason. And it's great to platoon guys with obvious L/R splits. But just throwing out different combinations isn't likely to create a positive atmosphere. I suppose if you say tinker or adjusting that just may be semantics. I'm not talking a bout flipping Lee from 3 to 4 every so often but "adjusting" the lineup on days off and injuries. Agreed on the semantics part. I was referring to making adjustments to lineups for platoons/injuries/pitching matchups.
  13. 6 walks for the Cubs today. Where are the real Cubs?
  14. Was that?...It couldn't be...IT WAS!! An RBI by Juan Pierre!!
  15. Making fun of the fat drunk isn't nearly as fun when the season is already over. Wasn't Weaver part of the Tiger team that was accused of sexually inappropriate behavior with flight attendants on their team charter? They were drunk and sexually harassing the female flight attendants. If I recall correctly Weaver was one of the main culprits. I don't know for sure the outcome of that situation, but Weaver and Ponson on the team plane could be interesting. I heard it was Weaver smoking pot in the restroom but not sexually harassing the attendants. I'm pretty sure the pot part is correct but not sure about the rest. Correct me if I'm wrong.
  16. They already did. They are the stars in the new Sprite commercials. IIRC Ponson is in yellow and Rusch is in green.
  17. Just say no to Izturis. For the sake of my sanity or what's left of it.
  18. I don't really have a problem with the Miller deal for this year. If he shows signs of coming back healthy then I wouldn't mind the Cubs giving him an incentive-laden one year deal for next year as well. We did the same with Dempster and Williamson and those were 2 year deals. I doubt we'll be able to trade him though because nobody knows what he can do after the surgery.
  19. Mabry into the game to play 1B and Howry in to pitch.
  20. Yes indeed it is. Signing Perez for 2/5 is going to tie the Cubs down especially since Hendry wouldn't eat a contract if his life depended on it. After moving Hundley in that wonderful deal it seems as if the magic is now gone and you'd think if no team is interested in Perez there may be a reason why. It's a miracle. We finally found something Hendry won't eat. Amazing. Sorry, the joke was WAY too easy to make and somebody had to do it.
  21. Nah, the bullpen's not at work yet. how're the Royals and Buc-o's doing this fine eve? Pittsburgh beat Phily 3-2 and KC is beating Toronto 8-3.
  22. This is what I'd like the see the rotation look like next year too. Give me either Schmidt or Z, but the 2003 version plz. And count me in on the Kerry for Closer BandWGN. It probably won't happen but it's a nice thought. I'll take the 2006 versions of both pitchers as well.
