  1. Southpaw is still MIA and with today's game being a day game, I figured I'd get this thread up. http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/5580.png&w=350&h=254 3.84 ERA, 1.23 WHIP in 11 games, 10 starts. http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/4138.png&w=350&h=254 8.31 ERA, 1.85 WHIP in two starts The Cubs had a good start to the homestand by taking two of three against the Mets and scoring 24 runs in the process. Hopefully they can keep it up this weekend against the Pirates and Astros to get closer to the Cards heading into the series in St. Louis next weekend. Also, if someone wants to inform the Cubs that winning more than two straight games is a good thing, that would be wonderful. GO CUBS!
  2. http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/30592.png&w=350&h=254 6.26 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 13 K, 6 BB in 23 IP over 13 appearances (four starts) As starter: 10.05 ERA, 2.02 WHIP, 8 K, 4 BB in 14 1/3 IP http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/2748.png&w=350&h=254 5.40 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 11 K, 8 BB in 23 1/3 IP over 11 appearances (two starts) As starter: 6.30 EAR, 1.70 WHIP, 4 K, 5 BB in 10 IP A great eighth inning propelled the Cubs on Saturday and hopefully they can keep it up tonight. Russell has allowed exactly four earned runs (two starts he gave up an unearned run) in all four of his starts this year while not allowing a single run in his relief appearances. Hopefully the Cubs can get some runs off Wakefield because Russell's likely to give up a few. GO CUBS!
  3. http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/4499.png&w=350&h=254 4.89 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 39 K, 19 BB in 57 IP over nine starts vs. http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/29223.png&w=350&h=254 2.60 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 9 K, 6 BB in 17 1/3 IP over 11 relief appearances. First start of season. Tonight's game didn't go too well so hopefully the Cubs can bounce back on Saturday. GO CUBS!
  4. This worked well last year so figured I'd start it up again. Milton Bradley got thrown out tonight while standing on second base and arguing (correctly, FWIW) an out call at first.
  5. http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/3845.png&w=350&h=254 2011: 20 IP, 22 H, 15 R, 14 ER, 7 BB, 22 K in three starts (vs. Pit, vs. Ari, at Hou) 2010: 3.85 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 215 1/3 IP, 86 BB, 208 K in 34 starts. vs. http://rockies.mlb.com/images/players/525x330/489567.jpg MLB stats: None MiLB: 4.55 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 886 2/3 IP in 153 appearances (148 starts) over 6+ seasons AAA (09-11): 5.69 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 289 2/3 IP, 97 BB, 179 K in 55 appearances (50 starts) A much better game on Saturday saw the Cubs even their record at 7-7. A win in this one moves the Cubs over .500, gives them the series victory and would send them back to Wrigley after a 5-4 road trip. Johnson looks very hittable so hopefully the offense shows up again and Dempster delivers a solid start. GO CUBS!
  6. http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/30947.png&w=350&h=254 1st start vs. Mil: 5 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K Last year: 4.11 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 57 IP, 25 BB, 27 K in 12 appearances, 8 starts vs. http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/6480.png&w=350&h=254 2011: 11 IP, 12 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 5 K at NYM and vs. LAD 2010: 4.81 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, 177 2/3 IP, 47 BB, 141 K in 30 starts Friday's game obviously didn't go too well so it can't get much worse. The Cubs haven't won more than two straight this year but haven't lost more than two straight either. Hopefully they can turn things around and get the W. GO CUBS!
  7. Here are the first round matchups: WEST 1. San Antonio vs. 8. Memphis 4. Oklahoma City vs. 5. Denver 3. Dallas vs. 6. Portland 2. Los Angeles vs. 7. New Orleans EAST 1. Chicago vs. 8. Indiana 4. Orlando vs. 5. Atlanta 3. Boston vs. 6. New York 2. Miami vs. 7. Philadelphia In case you didn't know (like I didn't up until a couple weeks ago) there is no reseeding in the NBA playoffs.
  8. Has anyone seen any good deals for MLB.TV for 2011?
  9. I hope it is okay that I make a new NBA thread for non Bull fans. The season opens tonight with the debut of the new look Miami Heat going to Boston. And the night ends with the defending 2x NBA Champion LA Lakers getting their rings and taking on the Rockets. Should be a fun year. Go BUCKS!
  10. Has walked only four batters this year in 86 2/3 IP. That's 0.415 BB/9 and would be sixth ever in baseball and the best since 1900 (beating Carlos Silva's 0.43 from 2005). He's also struck out 76 batters for a ridiculous 19 K/BB. The record is 11 set by Bret Saberhagen in 1994 (143 K, 13 BB).
  11. Figured this would work better than individual other games, at least for now. Anyway, Jered Weaver has a no-no through six against the Mariners today.
  12. Series finale. Cubs going for sweep. Please pitch well, Z. Please score some runs again, offense. Go Cubs.
  13. Second game of the series. Follows an off day. Please pitch well again, bullpen. Please score some runs again, offense. Go Cubs.
  14. Home opener. Please don't suck, bullpen. Please score some runs, offense. Go Cubs.
  15. I'm doing a story on the various UC Davis players that are in the minors and was wondering if somebody could provide me with the Baseball America rankings for the players from their prospect handbook. BA online only lists the top-10 and I'm wondering if any other Aggies are in the top-30. I'm looking for: Ryan Scoma (Giants) Ty Kelly (Orioles) Andy Suiter (Dodgers) Jake Jefferies (Rays) Justin Fitzgerald (Giants) Ryan Royster (Mariners) Bryan Evans (Marlins) Eddie Gamboa (Orioles) Brad McAtee (Rockies) Thanks for the help.
  16. Even though it appears the Cubs are a sinking ship, hopefully they can at least beat the Natinals.
  17. They give them all to some guy named "Ben Braun". From the Associated Press:
  18. Sean O'Sullivan of the Salt Lake Bees no-hit the River Cats tonight. The only thing keeping him from a perfect game was a walk in the seventh. I've never seen a no-hitter before tonight. I already envied all of you guys who got to watch Z's no-no in person last year, but after seeing this (a pitcher on a minor league team for which I have absolutely no interest), I envy those of you who were there last year even more. This was awesome.
  19. I know it a bit late for an other games thread, but I don't care. -The Pirates win over the Brewers ended a 17-game losing streak to Milwaukee. -The A's were losing to the Twins 12-2 going into the bottom of the third but now lead 14-13 going into the eighth inning after scoring seven in the seventh.
  20. This is mostly dealing with guys who aren't signed to major league contracts. I know the ML minimum is more than the MiL minimum salary, so what happens when a guy gets called up to the major league team? Take Bobby Scales, as an example, who had no ML service time coming into the year. When he (or a guy like him) got called up, what happens to his salary? Does this change if the player has any sort of service time?
  21. Since the Steelers and Pens won titles this year, I started thinking about the teams that I've pulled for all my life, and the championships they've won. In the big four, I am a Steelers, Penguins, Cubs, and Bulls fan (born in Chi, raised in Pit). 1979 - Super Bowl XIV Steelers - I was a baby 1991 - Penguins, Bulls 1992 - Penguins, Bulls 1993 - Bulls 1996 - Bulls 1997 - Bulls 1998 - Bulls 2005 - Super Bowl XL Steelers 2008 - Super Bowl XLIII Steelers 2009 - Penguins Noticeable absent from that list are the Cubs and the Gamecocks. Still, at age 29, 11 championship seasons that I can remember is pretty good. Thank God I didn't grow up in Cleveland. Your turn.
  22. I've heard people talk about it and understand the concept of it (i.e. if a guy lets a lot of runners on he's probably going to have a higher ERA and vice versa), but what I haven't been able to find are concrete numbers on it. Is there a formula that calculates expected ERA based on WHIP (eERA = a * WHIP + b) or something along those lines? Basically, if a guy has a 1.00 WHIP (or whatever number), about where do we expect his ERA to be?
  23. I know I'm not the only one to have Rammy on their fantasy team and with him being out at least 4-6 weeks (as is being reported at the moment), I'm going to need another 3B since I currently don't have another one on my roster. My league isn't too deep with only 8 teams so I've got some options. Categories are R, HR, RBI, SB, K, AVG, OPS and it's head-to-head. Available are (in no particular order) Russell Branyan, Scott Rolen, Mark Reynolds, Hank Blalock, Mark Teahen, Casey Blake, among others. Who would be the top choice if I'm looking for the best player available? I know Branyon is going to regress from his .999 OPS, but by how much? Can Teahen be expected to keep up this production or is it a fluke and is he going to revert back to what he did in 2007 and 2008?
  24. Is it okay to call them the Cobs yet? Anyway... This guy http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/mlb/players/65/3845.jpg 1-0, 5.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP against this guy http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/mlb/players/65/5403.jpg 2-0, 3.31 ERA, 1.59 WHIP Raising Wainwright's ERA would be a good start, Cubs.
