    I'm a little slow, but I'm not following. How does trading away a middle infielder make more sense if followed up by a trade for a starter pitcher (whom you'd likely need to use a bat to trade for). It seems it would make it less likely. by using the prospects you acquire in a Russell/Baez trade to acquire a starting pitcher.

    i'd be ok with this, depending on the price. Just sign Cobb if you want to pay a bunch of money to a guy who won't throw 200 IP. i'm fine with that outcome, but i like duffy more than cobb pretty easily. he's also younger and his contract is better than what I think Cobb is likely to get.

    well if the cubs are going to trade baez or russell to SD, i suppose i'd be cool with Machado as a replacement.

    yeah I don’t see a Baez/Russell deal with the Padres that I wouldn’t hate. And I really like Brad Hand. (I too was wrong about Soler/Davis last year.)

    Machado, maybe. But not Harper. They're not just going to completely ignore the luxury tax, and they've got their OF (and DH) pretty well covered now. Yeah a corner OF makes no sense for them now. But I could definitely still see them making a play at Machado.

    didn't Dipoto and the Angels part ways on somewhat ugly terms? just a little extra sting on top of losing Ohtani and piling up all this IFA money that they don't need.

    My favorite: I love that [insert player] "doesn't want to be the guy" is the refrain of the spurned cards fan. "Ooh, look at you, mister, 'I want to be a part of a competitive team.' A REAL ballplayer would jump at the opportunity to headline a roster full of trash." maybe we don't "play in a desirable city." maybe we don't "win a lot of games." maybe our fans are "incredibly racist." and i guess we don't "have a chance in the division for the next ten years." maybe we do "condone drinking and driving and white-collar crime."

    i mean, i know "money doesn't matter" is the narrative and i obviously hope it's true, but maybe it kind of matters if the angels and mariners are suddenly stockpiling IFA space after meeting with him. on the other hand, those two teams already had a significant advantage over everyone else but the rangers moneywise, so maybe they're just desperate?

    i'm not ruling out Cobb, but i kind of get the feeling there's a stronger market for him that pushes him beyond what the cubs are willing to commit to, so they jumped on Chatwood. And then, yeah, the other rotation spot will be a bigger impact guy.

    You aren't kidding. "[san Diego] is entering a competitive window" "They also have arguably the most savvy GM of the bunch." Here's the list of returning Padres with 2+ wins: Clayton Richard, Jose Pirela. Their GM has been punished for lying about medical info and is digging out of a hole he dug himself with a series of terrible trades. Ohtani might pick them for the locale/market and opportunity to be 'the guy' and the past relationship, but that's still quite the reality distortion field they're putting up. the only other team in their division that did not make the playoffs this year is ostensibly the favorite to acquire the NL MVP.
