    as long as it doesn't take us out of the harper sweepstakes, i really love the idea of addressing the pitching 100% through free agency this offseason and collecting draft picks for both Jake and Davis. especially with a potential frontline guy like Darvish, and even more especially if they buy into the pitch tipping thing and feel it's a pretty easy fix. i'm not against trading from the major league team at some point, but putting the team in a position where they don't need to do this for, hopefully, the next couple of years is really appealing. i'm also pretty worried about Lester going forward, so being in a spot where you're not relying on him quite as heavily is really important. a pitcher like Cobb doesn't accomplish that for me. Darvish clearly does.

    if he does what David threw out there for the next two seasons, i could see him opting out after ‘19. But even then I wouldn’t bet on it. After one year of that level of production, no way.

    Morrow Cishek Edwards Wilson Montgomery Strop Maples/Alvarez/Tseng/Grimm Looks alright. It'd still be nice to add another piece, but I agree that Davis/Reed look pretty unlikely. I could maybe see a Watson-level signing. More likely, this is what we're rolling with. Maples and/or Wilson stepping up would be excellent.

    so this guy seems to fill the same role kintzler would have--heavy groundball pitcher--but with much more swing and miss? i like it.

    Oh, I wouldn't at all want him closing, but he's plenty fine as another guy in the mix. Morrow would almost surely get the nod over him at least. And Wilson if he hasn't turned into Rick Ankiel. Every good bullpen needs a guy who can induce a double play. And, as you wrote, he'd play up with the Cubs elite infield defense behind him. Theo and Jed have gone out and got ground ball inducers before to varying degrees of success. Kintzler's track record is better than all those guys. I agree he'd be a good guy to have come out of the pen. I think the pushback was in the idea that if the Cubs signed him it would mean they'd be out on someone like Davis, Holland or Reed. So long as that's not the case, I don't think anyone wouldn't want to have him. Yep, that’s where I’m at. I’m fine with Kintzler, just not as the second best reliever acquired.

    He's a 2B, not an OF. But either way, I want no part of him. He was barely replacement level last year, injury-plagued and 30. He's just not worth putting us $14 million closer to the luxury tax threshold. Sorry I thought I read they were moving him to OF full time, or considering it. Either way, he'd be an OF here. He was worth half a win in a poor injury plagued season. The last 3 years he played 140+ games he was worth 4.5, 4.9 and 4.8 fWAR (2013, 2015, 2016). The injuries are always a concern with him but to add a potential 4+ win player, 14m is not a lot. I'm gonna stop because it sounds like I'm advocating for him, but its more of a 'not understanding why hes a hard pass' type of argument. that could be true with regard to the outfield thing. i do know he got some time there, but i figured that was because Ramirez entrenched himself at 2B while Kipnis was hurt. i think he could be a nice bounce back candidate for certain teams. i'm just not willing to gamble $14 million on a guy who doesn't really fill a need for us, will be 31 on opening day, and is showing signs of decline both health-wise and performance-wise. there's better ways to allocate limited resources.

    Out of curiosity why is Kipnis a bad pickup if its a buy low type of thing? He was bad last year but was a nearly 5 win player in both 2015 and 2016, only 30 and a relatively ok contract the next 2 seasons. I know we don't really need an OF, but he's not someone I could completely avoid acquiring in a trade. He's a 2B, not an OF. But either way, I want no part of him.     100% agree. but it's starting to feel that way. is Reed supposed to be close to signing with someone or something? No, I just haven’t heard him connected to the Cubs in the last couple days. A Reed + Morrow offseason for the bullpen would be excellent.
