    so SF and the Dodgers had their meetings yesterday, and the Rangers have theirs today, apparently.

    It could be those things, but Texas has shown as much interest in him as anyone, over the years. The relationships built surely helped get them to the table, in this process. ah, ok. i did not realize they have a history with him.

    Is the interest in the Rangers completely based on the bonus money available and cost of living in Texas? Maybe Darvish had some really nice things to say too. Otherwise that does not seem like a really attractive option for the long term. I know they have some young talent in Gallo, DeShields and Mazarra, and Andrus is still just 28, but the rest of the talent on the roster is on the downside of their careers.

    Maybe the Braves? With everything that has gone on there. Also spare me the “do the dance” thing, it was a horsefeathering questionnaire. If anything it was a good thought/introspective/review exercise for teams to evaluate where they were organizationally in areas other FAs probably feel are important too yeah, the indignation of the fans/writers of some of these teams is hilarious. the cubs and rangers still being in the mix shows that he’s not 100% committed to the West Coast. Other teams had the opportunity to impress him. They just didn’t. And any GM worth a damn should be prepared to answer those questions anyway.

    Missed opportunity for a Maeda! Maeda! Maeda! reference, but I'll allow it. Also, please please please be true. yeah, i'm kind of just waiting for this to be shot down.

    That Maeda’s some kind of something. Boy this Maeda is all anyone’s ever talking about. I’m so sick and tired of hearing about what a star that Maeda is.

    Stanton/Giants is basically the only scenario I can see where a team could materially improve their chances of getting Otani by moving more decisively, and even that feels like a bit of a stretch. The teams in closest competition for him are the ones that already look to be really good, which is what you expect when money isn't a factor. I think the new luxury tax combined with a weak FA class is the biggest reason behind the stagnation. You've got several of the highest payroll teams not interested in spending or even looking to cut payroll to get under in advance of the 2018 class. Any team that could spend on Darvish or Arrieta will try their hand with Otani first(since most teams aren't focusing that much effort on getting 2 SP), and teams outside that pool aren't going to sprint to sign mid-market guys in case the biggest FAs see their market suppressed to the point they can jump in. this makes sense. i had not considered the bolded.

    i love how this is set up in a way that leads all thirty teams to believe they have a chance. realistically, it's probably closer to 5. but i sure do enjoy hearing about why the reds and marlins are the best fit for this potentially generational talent.

    maybe i'm off base on this, but i'm especially surprised by the slow offseasons so far because really the only thing teams can do to improve their position with Ohtani between now and his decision is to improve the talent level of their team. a team like the Giants, for instance, who might have a shot because of their market size and large Asian population, but might be dismissed by Ohtani because of their record last year, could benefit by being more aggressive on the Stanton front (who they're pursuing anyway). i get that this is very flawed example because Stanton's NTC is a big factor in this particular instance. but it just seems like more teams should be aggressive early this year, given the opportunity to attract a franchise player in a situation where money isn't really a differentiating factor. the angels are another team that comes to mind. they were a few games out of the playoffs last year. add some talent early, and maybe the idea of playing with Mike Trout in Los Angeles, with DH on option for Ohtani, suddenly becomes more appealing.

    yeah, lots of questionable calls, but also some pretty poor basketball from illinois for a lot of that game. aaron jordan continues to be extremely impressive, though.

    Have they now? Of the 50 Japanese players that have made their debut since 1998, 9 have made their debuts with the Yankees or Dodgers. So, no. The Mets have actually had 7, which surprised me a bit.

    Up and down makes it seem like he got picked twice or something. He was steady, and then great at the end. I still think it’s a fine description. I was happy with his performance in general but there were enough poor decisions/throws (and the fumble) to prevent me from calling it an unqualified success. It was fun to see the mobility today though.

    Lol. Up and down seems like a perfectly reasonable description of Mitch’s performance. There was even a “more up than down” qualifier.

    Yeah depending on the +, I’m good with all this. I think they’d still need one more reliever and a couple small pieces on the offensive side, but if these are the main moves made I’ll be happy with the shape the team is in.

    i don’t see archer’s name so it doesn’t sound good.

    I'm starting to think it'd take 2 of them, if you're actually going to convince Tampa or Toronto to deal Archer or Stroman. Yeah, I'm thinking for one of those two, it'd take two of Happ/Almora/Schwarber and prospects (or just Russell plus some prospects?). The alternative would be the Happ-for-closer type trade that was being discussed here a few days ago, and then one of the other two for a mid/back of the rotation controllable starter (ideally a younger pitcher with upside).

    if that happens, i wonder if it'd be two players going in the same deal to land one of the top flight pitchers out there, or separately to address both closer and the rotation.
