Agree with most of this though I’d think small market teams would have major push back on shortening control. Another big thing that should be changed is tying draft position to spending, teams should be able to spend what they want and the current set up really incentivized losing since finishing a few spots lower increases spending ability rather significantly yup, i hear you. it would likely take a stoppage of play for that to even be on the table. oh and im glad the cubs benefitted from it with bryant, but the service time rules need to change to something other than the "keep the player in the minors for 11 days and you get to control him for another year" BS. make it later in the season so it actually matters.

i'm pro-player and all, and this current cba really sucks for them, but at the same time, this whole backlash against teams not signing players from this lackluster free agent class, at least with regard to certain players, is kind of silly. i mean, eric hosmer, who has accumulated 9.9 fWAR (!!!) over 7 seasons, including seasons of -1.7, -0.1 and 0.0, is reportedly sitting on two 7-year offers but is holding out for an eight-year deal. but the cap should be raised significantly. and rookie control should be shorter. if FOs want to keep harping on not wanting to pay for past performance, then let players get paid when they're most likely to be putting up their best years.

i don't like how darvish, jake, cobb and, in some cases, lynn keep getting lumped together. to me there's a pretty clear pecking order there.

i always read it that way anyway...obviously his source was within the brewers and there was never any way he knew for certain anything more than what the brewers thought. doesn't make his information useless...you just have to view it through that lens. yeah, I guess it’s possible I was over eager to believe him. but then again, there’s not much room for interpretation here:

yeah it’s been a full week since he made it sound like darvish to the Cubs was a done deal. even if it happens at this point, i don’t think he gets credit. i still believe he has connections to the Brewers and is worth listening to while also recognizing that he probably doesn’t actually have much insight as to what’s going on with the Cubs beyond what he can glean from his guy in the Brewers org.

my guess is the brewers got the impression that that's what's going to happen whatever info that guy is getting is coming from the brewers yeah, I’m not doubting that guy as a source by any means because it seems he’s called enough things that he deserves the benefit of the doubt. but i don’t think it was quite as much of a done deal as his sources believed.

damn it. this is the first time in over a month that i've had any real doubt about the cubs getting darvish. The problem is that "all signs point to team X" can sometimes mean the player is going to team X and sometimes means the player's agent thinks he benefits from appearing to want to go to team X. That thing about "other teams will have to *way* outbid the Cubs" sure felt like one of those. I'm still pretty sure it's happening. it kind of feels like the Dodgers thing might be some stale information. earlier in the offseason, Darvish made it clear he wanted to play for the Dodgers if they could clear payroll. they didn't clear payroll so, now, other teams must way outbid the Cubs for Darvish.

well, right. even taking the redskins out of the conversation, it seems like the blackhawks are one of the few organizations with a native american related name that hasn't received a ton of criticism. Brandon's post is one of the few times i've even seen them brought up. but i don't follow hockey a ton, so maybe it's there and i just haven't seen it. I kinda think there just isn't much pressure/outcry to change your mildly offensive name/mascot when the horsefeathering Redskins still exist. yep, this makes sense.

i feel like the blackhawks backlash has been pretty quiet compared to the Redskins, Indians, Chief Illiniwek etc. is there a reason for that? other than hockey just not being as popular as the other sports? or is there pushback that i just haven't seen? the chief wahoo and redskins are cartoonishly racist, while the others can more realistically claim they are honoring people. fair enough.

Well one is literally a racial slur so, while certainly insensitive, I'm not sure Illini and Blackhawks belong in the same sentence well, right. even taking the redskins out of the conversation, it seems like the blackhawks are one of the few organizations with a native american related name that hasn't received a ton of criticism.
