    Yeah he just has to sign for the Cubs to get a pick. Doesn't matter what the amount is. The amount determines the round. If it's over 50 million it's the comp round between round 1 and 2, less than that it's the comp round between rounds 2 and 3. It's the approximate difference in getting pick 33 or 73. Aren’t they receiving the 75th pick (or around that) for Davis, who signed for over $50 million?

    in seeing this i tried to come up with mine and i kept going between cutler, urlacher, and mike brown. for me it's Peanut, but the four guys mentioned in the quoted posts are definitely near the top. Brown was so much fun and if it weren't for the injuries he might be my guy. prime Tommie Harris was amazing to watch and if he had any longevity he'd be up there for me as well.

    so am i correct in that sims, massie, and cooper are the only players on this list that haven't been cut yet? and maybe wheaton? i've read conflicting things about him.

    it's one of my dad's favorite pieces of baseball trivia, so i've heard about it plenty because of him. but it always seems like new information to people when he tells them, so i'm not surprised it's not super common knowledge.

    you should share this with cubs twitter somehow what the hell book is this it's called Emerald Baseball. got it as a gift like six years ago and it's been sitting on my shelf since. since i was confined to my couch all weekend and didn't have anything else to read i finally powered through it. it was a quick, mostly forgettable read, some interesting/amusing anecdotes. but that definitely was not the only error in the book.

    i was reading this random baseball book the other night and this error was so bad it makes me question accuracy of information contained in every book ever.

    I wonder if at this point some guys are sitting out, out of principle to prove a point for another week or so even if they have decent offers (like JD and his 5/125 or whatever and Hosmer and his 6/120 or whatever). i still can’t believe that not only are there two teams offering eric horsefeathering hosmer $140 million deals, he’s also not falling all over himself to accept one of them before both GMs sober up.

    nah, i read it. i just think it's a silly premise to explore with this group given the last three years, and it's a well that people keep going back to. last summer, i had family members insisting that the reason the cubs were struggling is that they were missing the leadership of David Ross, Dexter Fowler, and Travis Wood. now we're wondering how we'll do without Jake, Davis, and Jon Jay's leadership. yeah, those guys all brought something to the clubhouse i'm sure. but aside from assembling a powerhouse roster, Theo and Jed focus pretty heavily on character. the content of the article was fine i guess, but leadership is not one of the "10 crucial questions the cubs have to answer this season."

    Yes, the infrequent stuff Rian Watt did for them(although he's now at Fangraphs) was very good too. I will say, I wasn't sure if this was the CSN influence or not, but Mooney's stuff has a sensationalist, Wittenmyerian cynicism at times that rubs me the wrong way. He's still the best with sourced rumors, and maybe more time around Sharma will help, but it's just enough to annoy me in a fair number of his columns. yeah he's mostly good, but i've been just a bit annoyed with some of his writing lately too. his "who's going to lead the clubhouse now that jon jay, jake arrieta and wade davis are gone" article was pretty silly to me.

    A year away, but given what it would take to dump Heyward (paying most of his salary, prospects, etc.), I wonder if they'd consider trading Schwarber for cheap production/pitching, keep Heyward in right, and move Bryce to left. Yeah, I think they get to a point in 2019 where we look to trade Schwarber or Happ to re-stock the farm system. And that would be a super baller move for a top contender to do. this is kind of the direction i'm seeing too. if we have an entire IF and Bryce Harper locked up, trading one of Schwarber or Happ seems like it could be an opportunity to rebuild some prospect depth. but we've also found a way to build the team into a consistent powerhouse without trading much from this current wave of young talent so far, so i think any deal they make is going to be very much on Theo's terms.

    i know we won't need to do anything else, but curious what other moves people think we make after signing harper. do they try to deal someone of the schwarber/happ/almora group, one of heyward/zobrist, send la stella off to wherever jake lands, or just say horsefeathers it and keep everybody? having harper, bryant, rizzo and contreras in the lineup offers a lot of flexibility for the other four non-pitcher spots. eta: i know there's a full season to be played before harper becomes a cub and a lot of things can and will change. just curious what people think if everything goes mostly as expected.

    aside from one guy saying theo should horsefeathers a goat, i don't see anyone making a big deal out of it. the commentary has been pretty mild.

So why didn't people have a problem with it then like they do now? well, on my end, because context matters. the relationship between players and front offices is much icier now. and, i alluded to his past comments in my previous posts by noting how he has brought up quintana being underpaid multiple times now. it’s not a fireable offense or anything and it doesn’t impact my perception of Theo in the grand scheme. I made a throwaway comment about it and probably would’ve forgotten about it by like dinner time yesterday. we all love theo. it’s just kind of a bad look, to me anyway, to keep harping on how underpaid one guy is and how that helped the cubs give another guy $126 million. it’s amusing to me when I look at it through the lens of any other profession.

    Yeah, it seems strange. When I heard Theo say it, I didn't take it at all negatively as a few of you have. Theo has talked a few times about how disappointed and frustrated he's been for the players this offseason. Can't imagine many other front office types have talked like that. He's said all the right things even if he doesn't mean it. I mean, I think Theo enjoys giving fans some insight/education into the decision making process and strategy involved in the transactions they make, and this was just an opportunity to circle back and talk again about why the quintana trade was such a good one for the cubs even though they had to surrender pretty serious prospect talent. his comments yesterday close the loop by showing exactly how the quintana deal afforded the cubs the ability to make another significant move for a pitcher. I get all that. I don’t think what he said is incredibly scandalous or anything... I was mostly kidding. Jose agreed to that contract when he was under no obligation to do so, and it wasn’t Theo that made the deal. It just struck me as kind of funny given the state of things is all.

    well, I, personally don’t think theo should horsefeathers a goat. it’s just a weird drum to be beating at that level of specificity given the current environment. if he made mention in broad terms about the number of young players under control for the next 3-4 years providing surplus value allowing the team to round out the roster with three big contracts, I wouldn’t have really thought twice about it. and I’m sure there’s no friction or anything and I don’t think it’s a big deal. it’s just struck me as kind of funny to me to focus specifically on Quintana in his comments multiple times now is all. “thanks to Jose for pitching on a dirt cheap contract, we were able to give Yu Darvish a truckload of money!” not that I’m not thrilled to have quintana on that contract or anything.
