  1. He was going to be our Pedro Martinez is there an echo in this post i don't know but i definitely thought juan cruz's career would echo pedro martinez's.
  2. yeah i'm sure jose loves hearing about how the cubs were just able to give a top 20 pitcher $126 million because he's a top 20 pitcher on a $26 million contract. I’m sure he was very happy and felt fortunate to sign that up to 7 year $40 million contract after being a career journeyman pitcher for like 6 years and being released/given up on by 2 teams "career journeyman" is an interesting way to describe a guy that made his major league debut at 23 and stayed with the same team for 5.5 seasons.
  3. That's this close to Theo drunknely raving about how he can't believe how little they have to pay Quintana. yeah i'm sure jose loves hearing about how the cubs were just able to give a top 20 pitcher $126 million because he's a top 20 pitcher on a $26 million contract.
  4. Theo always looks hammered. yes... "looks"...
  5. i remember ricky ledee being talked about as well. and lilly, i think?
  6. Yeah, what makes me pause are my, admittedly, unfair expectations for Schwarber and Heyward going in to 2016, plus the assumption that godmode Jake was going to still be a thing all season. yeah, even soler i still had quite high hopes for. i truly thought that we had 4 likely above average OFs on the roster. this year, i look at the OF group and i'm just kind of like, "yeah, we'll figure out some combination that works."
  7. looking at 2016 without the ability of hindsight? tough call, but probably 2016 because my expectations for schwarber and heyward were extremely high before they were basically immediately crushed, not to mention fowler being part of the team. but, i like the rotation and bullpen depth much better for the 2018 version of the cubs going in, and the emergence of contreras is basically on par with the production i was expecting from one of schwarber/heyward. ok, maybe 2018. we're winning the world series again this year is what i'm trying to say.
  8. yeah, cashner is intriguing, but I’m good with the pen as is unless we somehow end up counting on monty for the rotation.
  9. not sure if this was already posted. [tweet] [/tweet]
  10. god, our first news in two weeks and it has to be from nightengale? we’re all actually in the bad place.
  11. smh PTR can't even afford to buy new boxes we're definitely not getting darvish guys
  12. Agree with most of this though I’d think small market teams would have major push back on shortening control. Another big thing that should be changed is tying draft position to spending, teams should be able to spend what they want and the current set up really incentivized losing since finishing a few spots lower increases spending ability rather significantly yup, i hear you. it would likely take a stoppage of play for that to even be on the table. oh and im glad the cubs benefitted from it with bryant, but the service time rules need to change to something other than the "keep the player in the minors for 11 days and you get to control him for another year" BS. make it later in the season so it actually matters.
  13. i'm pro-player and all, and this current cba really sucks for them, but at the same time, this whole backlash against teams not signing players from this lackluster free agent class, at least with regard to certain players, is kind of silly. i mean, eric hosmer, who has accumulated 9.9 fWAR (!!!) over 7 seasons, including seasons of -1.7, -0.1 and 0.0, is reportedly sitting on two 7-year offers but is holding out for an eight-year deal. but the cap should be raised significantly. and rookie control should be shorter. if FOs want to keep harping on not wanting to pay for past performance, then let players get paid when they're most likely to be putting up their best years.
  14. wow, i have no idea where i was when the cubs got eddie butler.
  15. https://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/john-defilippo-bears-interview-was-fantastic-future-bright-with-matt-nagy/amp/ usage of "obviously" that would make jim hendry blush
  16. i don't like how darvish, jake, cobb and, in some cases, lynn keep getting lumped together. to me there's a pretty clear pecking order there.
  17. i always read it that way anyway...obviously his source was within the brewers and there was never any way he knew for certain anything more than what the brewers thought. doesn't make his information useless...you just have to view it through that lens. yeah, I guess it’s possible I was over eager to believe him. but then again, there’s not much room for interpretation here:
  18. yeah it’s been a full week since he made it sound like darvish to the Cubs was a done deal. even if it happens at this point, i don’t think he gets credit. i still believe he has connections to the Brewers and is worth listening to while also recognizing that he probably doesn’t actually have much insight as to what’s going on with the Cubs beyond what he can glean from his guy in the Brewers org.
  19. RIP Kevin Towers. Thanks for giving Theo a job.
  20. my guess is the brewers got the impression that that's what's going to happen whatever info that guy is getting is coming from the brewers yeah, I’m not doubting that guy as a source by any means because it seems he’s called enough things that he deserves the benefit of the doubt. but i don’t think it was quite as much of a done deal as his sources believed.
  21. it's been almost a week since that brewer guy said darvish is signing with the cubs.
  22. Blake traded to the Pistons [tweet] [/tweet]
  23. damn it. this is the first time in over a month that i've had any real doubt about the cubs getting darvish. The problem is that "all signs point to team X" can sometimes mean the player is going to team X and sometimes means the player's agent thinks he benefits from appearing to want to go to team X. That thing about "other teams will have to *way* outbid the Cubs" sure felt like one of those. I'm still pretty sure it's happening. it kind of feels like the Dodgers thing might be some stale information. earlier in the offseason, Darvish made it clear he wanted to play for the Dodgers if they could clear payroll. they didn't clear payroll so, now, other teams must way outbid the Cubs for Darvish.
