  1. Looks like Tim secretly cut back on server costs for the 2nd half anticipating a Cubs continued swoon
  2. There are only so many seasons with Rizzo and Bryant both healthy and producing at a high level, plus guys like Russell, Contreras, Baez, etc. on cheap deals, I would not be okay with shying away from a significant addition just because the first half was a little disappointing. They still have 62% odds of winning the division. Also it's 3.5 years of control for Quintana, he makes future offseasons much easier to manage. FA's and teams would have a lot of leverage if the Cubs needed to add 2-3 SP in one offseason, now it's potentially only 1 if they like Montgomery(or Butler). I am talking myself into the logic behind the trade as it sinks in. I guess it was just the initial shock of seeing Eloy and Cease both go but it makes sense. I just don't want to get into the position where we have to spend money in FA to improve our team because there is nothing left in the farm. But this seems like a reasonable long term type of move.
  3. hate to break it to you but the Dodgers have actually hit lefties significantly better than righties this year .819 OPS against lefties, .776 OPS against righties
  4. So Arrieta and Lackey make about $31m this year and will be off the books. Quintana will make ~10m a year each of the next 3 years. Obviously we'd still need to fill a rotation spot but thats $21m in surplus funds for.....Harper?
  5. Lester Quintana Hendricks Arrieta Lackey/Anderson Not bad. Arrieta is probably on par with Lackey last season, Quintana is on par with Arrieta last season. Now we just need Hendricks and Lester to do reasonable impressions of their 2016 selves and we're golden.
  6. Also I remember sitting on a park bench reading about the Cubs signing Torres and Eloy way back when they were minors and getting excited. We've developed them into the number 3 and 5 prospects in baseball so its sad to let them go. I wouldn't take back the Chapman trade for anything because I don't think we win it without him, and hopefully I will feel the same way about this trade when all is said and done. All the smarts here seem to like the deal so I guess I'll go along with it
  7. Am i the only one that's not a big fan of this trade? Maybe I just accepted the Cubs as a team that holds at the deadline and whatever happens happens but damn this guts our 2 top prospects. I was really hoping for Eloy to come up and take the place of someone in the current core that gets too expensive to retain in a few years (looking at the Schwarber, Happ, Russell, Javy group, obviously pay Rizzo and Bryant the moon) I know its stupid to get attached to prospects, but I would have been more than fine with making a minor trade and holding until the offseason when the price might be cheaper. That said 2.5 years of control is really nice for a really good pitcher. He will replace Jake after the season and we can use Jake's money to sign another really good starter. Now its up to the offense to start hitting like they are supposed to. Also I read a passage in Verducci's book yesterday were theo talked about hating to gut the farm system to demand 95+ win teams every year with the red sox and how he wanted to have a bridge year. Considering we're under .500 and 5 games behind a playoff spot in the loss column i wouldnt have minded this being a bridge year for the Cubs.
  8. I swear they do this to horsefeathers with us
  9. I can't see the Cubs selling unless they fall 8+ games out of a playoff spot by the end of July. Right now I think its hold with maybe some minor selling if they could get anything for Lackey (ha ha ha), Duensing (ha ha ha but lefty reliever that doesnt completely blow isn't without any value), maybe even Jon Jay. Those are parts you can sell off without changing the team too much.
  10. Read this in a Trib article. This could have worked: I was team blow it up, but the one thing that sucks about trading our only superstar is that we lose a lot of rep and credibility around the league. I can't think of many stars that have jumped to a team in FA that doesn't have one of their buddies from the NBA inner circle already in place. With enough cap space Chicago could be an attractive destination for a couple of FA's to team up and sign together, but I don't think GarPax or the Bulls org in general has a good rep amongst players right now and I doubt people like Jimmy or Wade would vouch for the Bulls either. So this makes the rebuild that much harder if JR is insisting on keeping the GarPax dynamic. We have to hit on lottery picks and have them develop quickly otherwise its looking like a 5+ year rebuild.
  11. I mean...a real Joe slogan from this year was "Embrace the Suck". Perhaps he knew what was coming.
  12. The Cubs have lost more games by 5+ runs so far this year than they did all of 2016
  13. They were just embarrassed 3 days ago and it didn't seem to help
  14. You'd think that with the pressure of winning gone the Cubs could at least spare their fans from seeing them have 8 men reach in 4 innings with only 1 run.
  15. I think the Cubs just played the 2015-2017 seasons out of order.
  16. Make that 4.75 it’s 4.25 Yahoo has it as 4.75 but I'm guessing not all of Lester's runs were earned because of the error and maybe Yahoo just counted them all as earned
  17. 65 pitches thrown in the top of the 1st
  18. Lester's career ERA went from 3.47 to 3.51 over the course of 25 minutes
  19. Lester started the inning with a 3.94 ERA for the season. It is now 4.67
  20. Lester's live ERA for the season 4.35
  21. Hey Lester the AS break actually starts tomorrow FYI
  22. I'm starting to wonder if we are even going to be buyers at this point or if Theo is just going to let this team wallow in their horsefeathers and build for next year. I get that there is the ability to do both buy trading for Arrieta and Lackey replacements but the cost might be lower in the winter
  23. why? Because Joe chooses who pitches and he will avoid using the guy on his team who had elbow issues last year from playing in an exhibition.
