  1. We didn't sign him because everyone assumed Dubois would be serviceable in left.
  2. point and laugh at the red sawks, they're going to the playoffs
  3. maybe it was ironic applause. if the cubs lose this i will cry
  4. 31 will probably be retired after Maddux retires. I guess Fergie and Greg will share it.
  5. he did aight
  6. I didn't read the book, but did Jose say that he introduced steroids to Raffy? Because if he didn't say that, I think it's ridiculous to find some sort of connection between the fact that Raffy's 1st offensive explosion season came when Jose joined his team.
  7. Good thing our team has great chemistry, because they're already out of the division race, and quite a bit behind in the wildcard. I'm glad Sammy's gone, because if the Cubs had this record with him on the team this year, he'd shoulder 100% of the blame, which would be unfair. Just like last year.
  8. The argument for Dawson as HOF material 1. only person with 300 HRs and 300 Stolen bases that's not in the HOF or named Barry Bonds. The other 2 being Mays and Bobby Bonds- that's pretty select company. 2. injuries cut his career short He's borderline but his numbers are pretty comparable to Tony Perez (if memory serves) minus the WS rings. I wasn't saying that Dawson doesn't belong, he has a case. But to write that Dawson does belong in the Hall in the same article where you say Raffy doesn't is ridiculous.
  9. I think we found one issue that everyone at NSBB can unite on.
  10. IsoD is isolated discipline. OBP - AVG. Essentially, it shows how disciplined he is at the plate.
  11. I think I know quite a bit about the game. But I still have no idea what constitutes a balk. So...what constitues a balk?
  12. so dawson belongs in the hall, but raffy doesn't? .279/.323/.482 vs. .289/.371/.516
  13. I'm not sure what you're going for. In terms of talent, the 04 Cards blow away this year's Sox. It's not even close. But if you're talking about a team that surprises everyone and runs away with a division early, I can see the comparison. Though I still say the 04 Cards are miles ahead of the 05 White Sox.
  14. So... I'm rooting for the Cardinals this series. I'd like them to sweep the Astros, so a potential WC candidate is weakened. I think at this point we can concede the division and ask the Cardinals to beat up on WC candidates.
  15. Well, I do see your point. But I think the responsibility of ownership is basically to provide a nice payroll, and to hire someone competent to run the baseball team. Now, I can't and won't defend those signings. But I think most people would say that, overall, Hendry has done a good job running the Cubs. Others think that he hasn't, and they certainly can bring up valid points to back it up. But they have a guy, who in most baseball circles, would be considered successful. So to me, that shows that the ownership isn't a problem for this team. I think they've held up their end of the deal.
  16. Eh, I'm not so sure... anyone who goes out and sign a Jose Macias, that's a problem, at least in my book. I'm just suprised that the ownership didn't do anything about the fact that Neifi just plainly sucks, and try to force the manager to play the young players. Oh well. *shrug* Jim Hendry isn't the owner of the Cubs.
  17. The Cubs have one of the top, if not the top, payrolls in the National League. We have a lot of problems...ownership isn't one of them.
  18. Let's keep it civil, okay? Is ridicule really the best choice here? Someone who values the ability to put the bat on the ball with some consistency doesn't deserve to be ridiculed on a classy board like this one. Plus, the argument that great pitching has been known to take advantage of a guy who is prone to strikeout and that a team will face a lot more great pitching in the playoffs is a very sound and logical one. I'm still in favor of trading for Dunn, but he does have his weaknesses. To talk about them and inquire into whether they can be exposed during the playoffs is a worthwhile discussion, isn't it? I'm sorry, but I still can't believe people use the argument that Dunn might struggle against elite pitching to knock him down. Pretty much every single MLB hitter is prone to the great pitchers. That's why they're the best pitchers. And for what it's worth, Dunn has excellent career numbers against Roger Clemens. I'd be ridiculed on this board if I were to say, "Yeah, Mark Prior is good and all. But sometimes when he faces an elite hitter, he gives up a hit. I just don't know if I want him pitching in clutch situations because of this!".
  19. awesome Is Dunn the perfect hitter or something? He's a whiff machine, and I agree with what the Wiz said - good pitching can dominate strikeout prone guys and you'll find good pitching in the playoffs. Has Dunn ever been in seriously clutch situation with the Reds? Hardly. Skepticism of a lifetime sub-.250 hitter's chances in the playoffs seems pretty logical to me. All I'm saying is that Dunn would probably put up his normal numbers in "clutch situations". And his normal numbers are awesome. You see Dunn as a sub-.250 hitter. Fine. I see a guy with a .382 career OBP and .512 SLG. But I guess batting average wins.
  20. awesome
  21. I guess bad habits are hard to break! Don't even start. Ugh.
  22. what's so funny I'm not sure what the comparison was but two-base, three-base and four-base hits are all better then walks. Singles still edge out walks because they can score a base runner from second, third and sometimes first. Like when Hector Villanueva hits a gapper and Dunston's on first. Dunn's SLG% suggests that 2-base, 3-base, and 4-base hits aren't a problem for him though.
  23. Leiter wasn't bad at all last season for the Mets. I actually thought he'd be decent, seeing how Dolphins Stadium is a pitcher's park. Oh well. Age can hit out of nowhere I guess.
