Cashner was the more important decision to me than Castillo, so I'm happy. I don't think there's any doubt that Castillo's much, MUCH better than Hill, but as others have pointed out he's probably better off getting regular playing time for Iowa than gathering splinters on the Cubs' bench. If Soto goes down for any period of time and Hill gets the bulk of the playing time then I'll be angry. -

Actually we did it in the spring last year too, but we did it before the major league draft. And I think people were better about sending a PM to the next person up, as you and I both suggested in this thread.

It's been going on for a few years. I believe it started either the same year as the CBI or one year later.

It mainly has to do with whether the player is on the 40-man roster, I believe. Players on the 40-man roster are optioned. Players on minor league contracts with NRIs are reassigned. Going in the opposite direction if a player on the 40-man is called up he's recalled, whereas if a player not on the 40-man is called up his contract is purchased (or sometimes worded as selected). -
Are we talking Rey Ordonez or Rey Sanchez? Pretty sure that was Ordonez's nickname. Yep. No "o," no "d."

Wellemeyer was assigned to minor league camp, not cut. Same as Guzman. Berg and Maine were optioned to Iowa. At least that's how cubs.com is reporting it. -

I think as a general rule we should send a PM to the next person up after making our picks. Since the draft isn't on CBS there won't be automatic notifications as with the regular draft.

We've shortened the number of starts for shortened weeks (the week of the All-Star break) in the past, so similar treatment would be to allow more starts for a long "week." We've generally adjusted the starts to equal an average of one start per day, so to me it makes sense to allow 9 starts for the first "week."

I'm in that position with Ka'aihue. I'd like to leave him on my minor league roster to start the season, but if Morales starts the season on the DL as now seems almost inevitable that might affect my decision. It would be nice to be able to make that decision by the start of the season rather than now. Also, I'm not really sold on the fairness of making a prospect immediately available for drafting if dropped by another team. If a manager drafting in the middle of a round drops a player managers drafting after that would have an unfair advantage over those who have already drafted before the player gets dropped.
