Ok let me get this straight: Cubs trade young minor leaguer Jose Ceda to the Marlins for Kevin Gregg who was likely to be non-tender, but now he's likely to get a raise in arb. Because of that move, the Cubs are considering non-tendering Chad Gaudin because of his "contract?" Ths would be a  move.

I don't think so. Towers already said in regards to the Peavy trade is that "the train has left the station." At this point you can not not trade a pitcher when you said you would. I suspect this increases the chances of Peavy being moved, because Peavy is not going to want to spend the next 4-5 yrs on a Padres team that will challenge the old Devil Rays for futility.

Greene to Cards close
RedFlash replied to mdwilla's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
We know how well the last time the Cards pick up a discarded SS from San Diego: .222 .294 .256 at 27 yrs old .213 .260 .339 at 29 yrs old So naturally, Greene will be a Cardinal fior the next 15 yrs and becomes their next pseudo HOF, like Ozzie Smith. -
08-09' Blackhawks (46-24-12) 104 PTS - 4th Seed In The West!
RedFlash replied to Cynosure's topic in Other Sports
I maintain that Huet is the better goalie, but Khabby has played better this yr. I still think it is in the Hawks best interests to move Khabby as soon as they can, and let Huet take over the role he signed here to play. I know he hasn't given alot of people alot of confidence so far, but Huet is a confidence goalie, once he starts playing consistantly, people will have confidence in him. So the Hawks need to move Khabby as soon as they can. -
Put it this way, if the Cubs could survive with Moises Alou in LF for 3 yrs, 03-04 was Alou 2nd best 2 yr stretch of healthy by playing in 306 games, with 97-98 being his best playing in 309 in two yrs, and Andre Dawson, who five of his best yrs health wise came with the Cubs (88-89, and 90-92), I think Cubs could survive with Bradley. I think it worth the risk to bring Bradley in, especially if you still have DeRosa, Johnson, and Fukudome on the roster, and you can mix and match to make sure everybody is healthy.

IDK about that. I think you will see teams value their prospects little bit more due to the financial struggles of the economy. Which means, unless MacPhail lowers his demands on his players, teams are not going to be bullied into giving up young, CHEAP prospects for expensive veterans. For the time being Bavasi deal will be the excpetion, not the rule. I don't see teams giving in like Bavasi.

Vazquez to Braves close
RedFlash replied to mdwilla's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Vazquez being better then Marquis is open for debate. Is he more talented, sure. As for being better, I'm not so sure. And if the Braves are willing to eat what is left on Vaz's contract and give up two quality trade assest in Lillbridge and Flowers, then I know there is a team out there who would be willing to take Marquis on for just the one yr. The Cubs wouldn't be asking for a Flowers or Lillbridge type prospect, but a solid 10-15 ranked prospect in the organization is something realistic the Cubs ask for. -

Now the Vazquez deal gives me hope that the Cubs can move a similar pitcher with a cheaper contract in Marquis at the Winter Meetings. if by similar you mean they are both pitchers, then yes, they are similar By similar I mean they are both decent innings eating pitchers. The difference is Marquis contract is a yr shorter. -

Getting a decent lefty arm, a solid INF prospect, and nice middle of the rotation starter and another prospect for an innings eater---he's best attribute right now---is a nice haul for the Sox. Now the Vazquez deal gives me hope that the Cubs can move a similar pitcher with a cheaper contract in Marquis at the Winter Meetings. -

As much as I don't like the SOB, I get the feeling that Kenny Williams knows that the window of opportunity with that club (which he basically has kept in tact since 05) has closed, and that he is looking towards 2010/11. He's doing what a good gm should do and that is sell high while they still have good value. -
No to playoffs. BCS is fine as it is. Stop "Hilary Clinton" about the current format. Playoff system is not practical in D1.

I don't think so. I think it a product of Hester is no longer 100% focus on being a returner and his main focus is on being the best WR he can be. Steve Smith (Carolina) used to be a dynamic kick return in his own right with a PR average 9.3 and KR average of 25 ypg with 6 total touchdowns (Hester is PR 12.6 KR 22.8 ypg with 11 Tds combine), but when Carolina limit his touches as a returner and he became a full time star at WR, that's when his numbers went down. Dante Hall simply was not big enough, or strong enough to be anything other then a WR, and when KC/St. Lou tried to make him a WR he became injury prone. So no I don't see Hesters' career going down the road similar to Dante Hall, I see it as more of going down the road similar to Brian Mitchell.

I wonder if it was an AL west team that he turned down a deal to. My guess would be the Yankees, seeing as they want to upgrade first base, and want to use their available resources on CC and not Tex. Considering he is from California, I don't see him turning down a chance to play for the Angels or the A's.

Don't bother me with scores, were any of these teams PHYSICAL? my Tandy 3000 is still calculating the GRIT scores The only reason why I get defensive about Alabama, is because everybody assumes Florida is just wasting their time playing the SECCG. I just want people to realize that Alabama is a helluva team, and they were more than luck, they were also outstanding to get to 12-0. As soon as people give Bama the proper respect I will pull back on my fanaticism. Until them you won't convince me Florida is better then Bama. The only team in college football I am hesitant to face is USC. THE only team is USC. Alabama has always played Florida will good, or simply kicked their butts. Florida's "offense" is not going to be "explosive" come Saturday, and that every score---if they score mulitple times---will be earned. If you don't believe me, guys, go back and watch Alabama games all yr. Very few times did teams get an "easy score." I'm make a promise on this site and I will honor it......If Alabama loses I will come on this board and I will admit both SEC and to a lesser degree Alabama have been overrated by yours truly. Seeing as Alabama won't lose, I don' thave anything to worry about.
-
I will be here. I won't chicken away, but I will be here gloating about a Alabama victory. The better team will win and Florida is not the better team. Nick Saban will have his boys prepared and ready to go, and Alabama will methodically wear down Florida, and physical hurt the "pretty boys." Let's put it this way....if Florida isn't up 14-21 points after the first quarter, they will not win. People fall in love with Urban Meyer and the gimmick offense, but you tell you a secret, Nick Saban's "defense" (and ask vance, people cause he would know, also) eats gimmick offenses for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Learn the names of Rolando McClain and Don'ta Hightower, cause there is NOT a better LB duol in college football. You heard. You will be hearing this on Saturday night.

You people still fall into the delusion that Florida is signifcantly better then Alabama, when it reality Florida is no better then Alabama regardless of what BSPN says. What people don't realize that when Florida got punch in the mouth agains Ole Miss, they LOST. Regardless of how they lost, they lost. They should have won comfortable considering they play at home, but they didn't. In other words, Florida doesn't play well when faced with a physical team. Through in the fact that Tebow has not led a 4th quarter comeback as a starter (and trust me, Florida will not approach their scoring average against Bama), so we don't know how they will react when facing adversity. Keep overrating Florida and underrating Alabama. Please do. Alabama plays better when people don't give them the proper respect. WHEN Alabama beats Florida, you guys will see why Alabama is the best team in football. Florida is nothing more then a hollywood offense, and Alabama's defense is BUILT TO STOP this kind of flashy offense. (Look at Alabama against Florida last yr,even tho Flo won last yr it was JP was easily rattled, and Texas Tech a couple of yrs ago) Florida uses superior athlethicism and team speed to their advantages, and through the yr it worked. They are not superior to Alabama, and Alabama's physicality will overwhelm Florida, and Alabama wins the game comfortable. Why? Because Saban is the superior coach and his team rises to the challenge. Tim Tebow will be confused. Harvin will be of no consequence, and Demps and Rainey will crumble when their speed will be match by Alabama team defense speed. And when it is said and done...Alabama will win 35-17. Write it down, take it to the bank cause it will happen. And when it does, I will laugh all the way to the National Championship. And the scary thing is......Alabama isn't even playing to their full potential....... Everybody will see why I am a defender of Alabama after Saturday. Alabama is the best, and Florida will be just another victim. So I beg all of you haters, I really do.....keep doubting Alabama, please do. It only fuels the fire of Saban and the Tide. Again, please doubt Bama, cause when Alabama beat Florida, gloating will be such sweeter then any victory since 1992. Oh wait, Florida was favored in that game too, and look what happen.....Oh no..........Florida DID NOT want Alabama, I promise you. They rather have faced LSU, because they know Saban will outcoach Meyer and Crimson Tide will outplay the pretty boys who are afraid to get dirty. You hater will be eating crow in last then a week. Edit: There was some grammatical errors that I fixed.

Harris poll jumps Texas over Oklahoma. And a Florida/OU matchup will have to wait till next yr, or will have to played in another bowl.

Don't forget this is a KC team that has already picked up two other medicore but expensive players in Crisp and Jacobs (in Jacobs, soon to be expensive). So picking up Marquis fits into their ideology this offseason. And I agree I think the Cubs would to throw in a good upside player with Marquis if they want DeJesus.

That's a great thing to be able to do something like that. This is a great hire, but the problem wasn't defense with Tennessee, it was the offense. Hey dew, any idea who is likely as OC? No idea right now. I've heard (primarily from Hosak) that there's interest in Trooper Taylor, but otherwise not much. I suspect Lane Kiffin will likely call the plays himself, but again that's pure speculation. To be honest, Kiffin is going to struggle calling offensive plays when he doesn't have Reggie Bush, LenDale White, Mike Williams or a Steve Smith as his offensive targets. Which means dew, and I think you might agree is that keeping talented prospects like Marlon Brown, Eric Gordon (who really likes Alabama, btw) and Marsalis Teague (among others) in state. I really hope for UT sake those three young men stay in Tennessee, and make the Vols a much more talented and better team in 2009. Gordon and Berry in the secondary would be muy bueno. I'm a bit concerned about Kiffin's playcalling here as well, but it can't result in much worse of an offense than we had this year. We have talent on this team, it just didn't perform this year (offensively, that is). And I definitely hope that Kiffin, who is touted as a great recruiter, will be able to bring in at least some of the guys you listed. Gordon, Berry, Morley, Vinson. =P~ I agree. Tennessee might have the most underachieving team in college this yr. With that said, I think keeping Marlon Brown in state is crucial, IMO. He would give UT a Julio Jones/AJ Green type talent at WR for you guys. With that said, I do agree the names you listed are as crucial to keeping in state. I think the one that UT will have to fight to keep and perhaps might lose is Eric Gordon.

http://www.prosportsdaily.com/forums/showthread.php?t=297233&page=38 I want this to be true so much, but I'm not holding my breathe. I do believe this trade idea is incomplete. Couple of scenerios: 1: Could this mean with the padres possible getting Cedeno that Greene is heading to Baltimore in this deal? 2: Would this mean Luke Scott coming to the Cubs? I prefer Scott---since the Cubs are moving Fuku to CF---over the "supposed" Fontenot for DeJesus deal on PSD page. 3: Wouldn't the Padres need either another solid prospect like Castillo from the Cubs, or Billy Rowell or David Hernandez from the Orioles make sense to complete this trade? Cause trading a Top 5 pitcher for two middle of the rotation pitchers, a swing man, and middle of the pack SS doesn't seem like a good haul? I would kill for this trade to happen, but I doubt it will happen in that format.

I think at this point, Hendry is going to do whatever it takes (well at least, I hope so). For the RF thing, would we be content with Luke Scott? He's cheap, but put up some alright numbers last year. He's the left-handed bat we're looking for. I don't know...we'll see what Jimbo can do. I would personally not like to see Luke Scott in a Cubs uniform. I don't know who else we could get, but Scott played LF last year with a poor AVG and OBP. He also was worse during Day games and on the Road. I see him, at best, as a platoon partner with Mark DeRosa in right, which makes Fontenot a starter versus LHP's. Luke Scott is also 30 years old with "lukewarm" numbers over his career. I would rather see Hoffpauir platoon there if we can't afford someone better. And I realize his defense in right will be bad. .257/.336/.472/.807 ^^^^^^^ Those are Scott's numbers in 2008 and while they are not great numbers, but they are certainly serviceable numbers and they are definately better then "poor average and OBP." I'm not saying he's great, but for his cost (less then a $1 million dollars) I would say they could be a decent under the radar move for the Cubs. Well to be fair, that's definitely a poor average (which doesn't really matter) and a poor OBP. I think he's a bit better than that though. He was pretty streaky last year. Those were his worse numbers since his rookie yr in 2005 and he still posted an OPS+ over 100. He K:BB remain virtual the same but his power went up from 10-18-23 in three yrs. .266/.353/.497/.850 is his career numbers, and he is only 30 yrs old, so it's reasonable to think he can put up a couple more yrs of that said line. Considering his salary is still under $1 mill, I'd say he is worth taking a flier on. Did you quote the wrong person? I pretty much already said everything you just did. I'm agreeing with you. I'm just saying that you you can't deny that guy's claim that his average/OBP were bad last year, which you did. Wrong person I quoted. Sorry.

Looks like Derek Anderson is out and Ken Dorsey is in for Cleveland.
