  1. I think at this point, Hendry is going to do whatever it takes (well at least, I hope so). For the RF thing, would we be content with Luke Scott? He's cheap, but put up some alright numbers last year. He's the left-handed bat we're looking for. I don't know...we'll see what Jimbo can do. I would personally not like to see Luke Scott in a Cubs uniform. I don't know who else we could get, but Scott played LF last year with a poor AVG and OBP. He also was worse during Day games and on the Road. I see him, at best, as a platoon partner with Mark DeRosa in right, which makes Fontenot a starter versus LHP's. Luke Scott is also 30 years old with "lukewarm" numbers over his career. I would rather see Hoffpauir platoon there if we can't afford someone better. And I realize his defense in right will be bad. See dexter's post, as I agree with him. Considering the Cubs are still after Jake Peavy, the Cubs will need all the pieces they can to make that deal. Which means going after an high end caliber talent who is underachieving like Hermida are definately out of the picture.
  2. That's a great thing to be able to do something like that. This is a great hire, but the problem wasn't defense with Tennessee, it was the offense. Hey dew, any idea who is likely as OC?
  3. Same can be said for the Vikings.
  4. that and the fact that they have good defensive players. i know less about florida than i do about usc, but usc's defense is really, really good. Yes they are. Between Florida/OU/Texas/TTU/USC, USC is the team I look forward to playing the least. Which is why I'm hoping they stay the heck out of the BCS discussion for this yr. Next yr, I say bring them on, because next yr Alabama will have enought talent and depth to match up with USC. I maybe a tool when it comes to Alabama, but even I know that TTU/Texas/OU are teams that could easily put up 35 points on Alabama or even Florida's defense. But on the flip side both Alabama and Florida could easily dominate those Big XII teams and limited them to less the 20 points in any game. It would come down to whoever executes their game plans. But those games would fun to watch nonetheless.
  5. Stinks. I was enjoying watching State stink under him. Question now becomes who are they gonna get. Any SEC head coaching spot is highly coveted. I doubt this happens, but I wonder what kind of interest Phil Fulmer would have in that job (and likewise, what kind of interest MSU would have in Phil). I doubt there is interest, and I doubt Fulmer would insult UT by going to another SEC team. If Fulmer coaches again, it will be in a non SEC conference.
  6. I think the Cubs would do a 1b platoon of DeRo/Hoffpauir over acquiring those numbskulls.
  7. One down, one to go. Roll Tide! Consider it done.
  8. I doubt it's the O's. Why? Because apparently MacPhail is trying to convince either Tex or Burnett to come to Baltimore.
  9. He's a Sox fan And a Selig "yes man."
  10. I come to realize that people will simply hate good teams. And Alabama is a good, soon to be great, team. And the hate on this board against Alabama will make me smile. Careful there - this sounds oddly like what I was saying about Notre Dame two years ago. That didn't work out so hot. The only thing Charlie Weiss and Nick Saban have in common is that they are part of the Bill Belichick coaching family. The biggest difference betwee Weiss and Saban is that not only can Saban recruit the best players, he can also coach them up to be as good of players as possible. There is no way Charlie should be this mediocre with their last yr's recruiting class and yet here there are playing for a average bowl. Not to mention with only 9 seniors graduating and I assume the minimum underclassmen leaving, Alabama should be deeper, faster, quicker, and better next yr then there are this yr. Saban has his players playing for something. Does Weiss?

  12. No I didn't say everything is perfect at Alabama, because there not. There still several players that haven't bought fully into Saban's plans, it just I haven't heard any discension from the coaching ranks at Alabama. Trust me when I say this.......Tidefans is a CREDIBLE site for Alabama Crimson Tide information. The moderator of the site, "JessN" is credible. And if he says that to his knowledge that he hasn't heard Steele being unhappy at Alabama I believe him. It is common belief that Steele won't leave Alabama unless a better job or a HC job is his. Quite frankly Tennessee or Texas Tech DC jobs are not better jobs. I just say I trust "JessN" information about the coaching staff over some 3rd hand info from Florida State.
  13. Okay, here is what I am hearing. Kiffin is a done deal. Monte is believed to be on his staff (this is HUGE). Orgeron is rumored to be on the staff, as well, though there are rumors that O is being considered for the expected opening at DC for LSU (as is John Chavis, who is also rumored to be in the mix at Arkansas). David Reaves (current QB coach at South Carolina and Lane's brother in law) is on the offensive staff (presumably as QB coach), and I'm hearing that maybe two current coaches (Scott and Drayton) are being retained. TIFWIW. We'll know Tuesday at the latest. The source has been dead-on accurate regarding player dismissals and coaching moves in the past, and has strong ties to Trooper Taylor, who *might* be in the mix on this staff as well. What I like about this staff is that it keeps the recruiting class mostly intact. Oku will recommit, as will Giles. I think Marlon Brown signs at UT with that staff in place, and I like our chances at keeping Boyd. Defensively, you'd have to be out of your mind to not want to play for Monte Kiffin, so I think that a couple of guys who've been wavering, and have even decommitted might reconsider. Have you heard the rumors of Kevin Steele going to UT as well? Not under Kiffin. Monte is the first choice, and if he turns it down, I'd hope that Steele is on his list. Steele was a name closely tied to both Kelly and Leach. I've heard (third hand) from my FSU people that Steele is not happy being at Bama and wants out. Could be an interesting offseason, to say the least ... That I believe is misinformed info. Does Coach Steele wants to be a HC? Yes. Is he unhappy at Alabama? Absolutely not. A site that I frequent for my Alabama talk, the moderator of the site is incredibly reliable and he has made no mention of Steele's potential unhappiness at Alabama. (Trust me if a report of Steele unhappiness is legit, he would have reported it on the site) In fact if Steele is up for a HC job, Saban will encourage Steele or anybody on his staff to go for a better job. So no whoever told you Steele is unhappy is prolly just yanking your chain. I trust the moderator of the Tidefans over 3rd hand info anyday of the week.
  14. No I am not joking. The SECCG should not split the headlines with Tennessee's HC search. So either announce it immediately after the game on Saturday, or wait till after the SECCG. First: Unlike alot of Bammers, I do not "hate" Tennessee, I "hate" Phillip Fulmer. Alabama was going to get caught with those violations, Fulmer didn't have to be a snitch. Not to mention I didn't like how he backstabbed Johnny Majors for the UT job. Second: As anyone who have read my posts in the college football threads already know, I am a Alabama first, then a SEC diehard. I want the best in the conference. I don't see how Lane Kiffin is considered a "great" option. Besides I want Tennessee/Alabama game to matter, which means better coaching from Tennessee would be appreciated. I agree with that, but Kiffin wasn't exactly "Mr. Mature" as HC of the Raiders. I don't blame him for wanting out of Oakland, but there is something to be said about conducting yourself as a professional and not get yourself into a peeing contest with your boss/owner. I know pissing off a young HC is nothing new for Davis (Shanahan), but Davis can be blame being senile as a reason, what can Kiffin blame his portion on the story on?
  15. Tennessee isn't a hodgepodge of talent every yr. In fact Tennessee has to build their teams with outside the state talent. So, if Leach had gone to Tennessee he would have to go into other SEC states to acquire talent. And it's unlikely he would acquire any elite talent from any state in the SEC. So again, I doubt Leach could survive in the SEC. I didn't say he couldn't, I said I doubt it.
  16. I'm only going by what I've heard from people. But can you deny that the last two weeks or so Kiffin was practicially daring Davis to fire him? Having Sabastian kick a 70 yard field goal, releasing DeAngelo Hall, not being including in the I believe the defensively side of the ball. I'm not saying it's all Kiffin's fault, but Lane didn't necessarily handle it the best way.
  17. ''No. Starting we don't need. We're set. We've got six good starters [including Sean Marshall], and they're all experienced. Getting Dempster back was the key. We're in good shape with our starting pitching. Bullpen-wise, [we're looking for] possibly one more experienced pitcher. We've got a lot of young kids out there.'' That is Lou's quote. So I would assume the Cubs are looking at any and all options for the pen. It wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs decide to target Shouse. I mean Hendry has target lefties like Remlihger/Eyre/Rusch in the past.
  18. No offense dew, but Leach would have been horrible for Tennessee. Tennessee doesn't have the talent and a yearly basis to run Leach's type offense and the rumor is Leach isn't a strong recruiter. Leach, imo, would have been run out of the SEC in less then 4 years. I can understand that reasoning, but the word around the grapevine is that Monte is likely to stay with Tampa Bay. Would it surprise me if Monte does head to Tennessee with his son? No, but at this point he is more likely to stay with TB then go to Tennessee. Personally I think it would be stupid to wait till Monday to announce Kiffin as HC as that week should be dedicated to the UA/Fla SECCG. If I had my way Tennessee would have to wait till AFTER the SECCG before they could announce the decision. Barring that, having them announced on Saturday is prolly in the best interests of both the school and the conference. I actually paralleled the Kiffin signing to that of Alabama signing Mike Shula. The difference: Kiffin has slightly more experience then Shula. Otherwise this will be a tough sign given the lack of success Kiffin has had as a HC and about to take a job in arguably the toughest conference in America. So this is a tremendous risk. If he doesn't work it then he set the school/football program back four years. Al Davis is old and senile but he wasn't the only problem in Oakland. Kiffin's professionalism was questioned regardless of his public persona. In some ways Kiffin stilled acted like an immature child when he was coach of an NFL team. Just look at Kiffin trying to get himself fired near the end of his tenure. You could tell those last few weeks he was daring Al Davis to fire him. I understand that Davis is hard to work for, but you still owed it to the franchise and the league to act llike a professional. It is an extremely high risk, but I wish Tennessee would have landed a more experience and better coach.
  19. Monte Kiffin going to Tennessee rumor came be dubunked. I doubt Monte will be at Tennessee but Oregron is expected to be part of the staff. As for Kiffin, apparently he could be officially named the HC AFTER the Kentucky game. As an unbiased view of the Tennesse job, I think this isn't a extremely high risk for Tennessee. This is a guy who's professionalism was called into question in the weeks leading up to his firing. If he can't handle the pressure of working for Al Davis/coaching in the NFL how well he handle having to coach against guys like Saban/Richt/Meyer/Brooks/Petino and Nutt? I'm not saying it's not a risk worth taking, but it is a huge risk for Tennessee.
  20. what's with you and "slurping"? It's not my term. So one else on another board used it and it's an appropiate term considering the circumstance. I know LBJ is a pipedream but watching LBJ not win in NY for the next decade (become the next Patrick Ewing) would be great to see.
  21. Chris Bosh plz Bosh, Amare or Boozer in that order are the guys I would love to see paired with Rose. Well, assuming Lebron is unrealistic Of course. Saw Lebron on Sports Center yesterday, they're all torqued up about him being a Knick but, something he said was interesting - his FA destination will largely depend upon who he'll play with. Currently, the Knicks and Cavaliers have no one close to a Derrick Rose nor will they have in the near future. I think Lebron is smart enough to know that playing alongside Derrick Rose will get him closer to an NBA Championship than whomever his Knick or Cavalier teammates will end up being. Derrick Rose+Chicago endorsement=better situation then Lebron James solo act in NY, anyday of the week. Right now the only way the Knicks land James is if the Knicks land another great player before going after James. Derrick Rose coould potentially be the reason that James chose to go to Chicago over New York despite New York desparate and pathetic slurping of the guy. With that said I don't expect Paxson to even consider James, for whatever reason.
  22. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/11/cubs-rumors-tea.html Don't be surprised if Hendry declines to offer arbitration to Wood. There is no way Hendry doesn't offer Arb to Wood. Worse case scenerio Wood accepts and the Cubs have a back end of the bullpen of Gregg/Shark/Marmol and Wood. So yeah, Hendry should and will offer arb to Wood.

  25. As long as Paxson doesn't make another epic mistake, Derrick Rose will bring a major free agent (not Ben Wallace, but a LEGIT major free agent superstar) to Chicago.
