  1. Since you're going to play that game: I played competitive soccer for 18 years (granted, at the lowest level of the Belgian FA's official league) and the red card rule hasn't changed since I started playing in 1972. Local FA's do tinker with the rules sometimes in specific circumstances (usually youth or reserve competitions or tournaments) - I remember an experiment with mandatory substitution after a yellow card - but big rule changes at the professional level are extremely rare. The one I remember most vividly was when a goalkeeper was no longer allowed to handle a ball that was played back to him (except when it was headed back) - as a defender, that one took some time to adjust to.
  2. That can mean only two things: - someone got red (actually, it means one team got one red card more than the other team - I've seen some weird [expletive] happen during soccer games) - a player got injured and was unable to continue and the team has already used the maximum number of substitutions allowed.
  3. Especially if the game decides home field for the World's Series. As Cubs fans we don't need to worry about that.
  4. I would gladly take either one. AZ Alkmaar. Earnie Stewart gettin it done. http://www.noshortcorners.com/2011/06/i-had-growing-feeling-this-was-case.html Today's announcement that Kolbeinn Sigthórsson moves from AZ to Ajax for five million Euro paves the way for the Altidore move, according to Dutch sources.. Apparently Villarreal are being sticklers. They want the entire 5 million they got for Sigthorsson. Maybe it's just a negotiation ploy, but apparently this isn't as done as was being reported. The way it's being reported by the Dutch press, there's two sticking points remaining: - Villareal's asking price must come down - Jozy must be willing to take a pay cut from the 1 million Euro/yr he's making at Villareal. AZ's backup plan if the Altidore deal gets called off seems to be Ghana's Matthew Amoah, currently with NAC Breda.

  6. I guess the latest FIFA rankings aren't going to be too popular here: Mexico up to 9th, the US down to 24th. Not much arguments about the top five, probably: FIFA ranking
  7. Soccer - Preston North End last won a championship in 1890. Going way out on a limb here . . . the Cubs will break their streak of futility before Preston North End. I agree
  8. Soccer - Preston North End last won a championship in 1890.
  9. I wish him all the best over there.
  10. There's already 49 Dutch nationals under contract with MLB organizations - although a sizeable chunk of them are from Curaçao (including four of their five major leaguers). MLB is making an big effort to scout talent from outside the two traditional baseball nations (Italy and the Netherlands) by also organizing try-outs in Germany and the Czech republic. The system seems to work quite well - junior players are selected by their national baseball federations and sent to the try-outs and MLB selects those that get invited to the academy in August. Of the 227 that attended in the last five years, 45 have signed pro contracts with MLB organizations, which seems like a decent success rate.
  11. As it's basically a handful of posters that do that, you can put those on ignore (add them to you foe list).
  12. Az Phil has a note about him today. Said he's formally on the roster, but that he's actually staying at the European baseball academy, or something like that. That makes sense - it probably also allows him to finish high school as the academy is in Italy.
  13. Another game I'll be able to watch, so they better make it a good one - GO CUBS!!
  14. As far as I can tell, it has become a pattern in recent years to send young Europeans to the DSL or VSL first. Thirteen Dutch nationals (i.e. including those from the Dutch Antilles) are currently active in those two leagues.
  15. Mineo to Mesa is kinda surprising - I was expecting him to be sent to the DSL. Not complaining though.
  16. Better not look at any pics of darts pros
  17. It occurred to me that tidbits from around the rest of the world of amateur baseball might not warrant starting a seperate thread each time, but could be interesting enough to be mentioned on NSBB, hence the title of this thread. In the drive to make baseball internationally more popular, there are sometimes unexpected setbacks: FC Barcelona axes baseball. That's bad news ten days after the announcement that the 2013 WBC would be expanded with 12 new teams (including Spain) and include a 16 team qualifying round for the smaller baseball countries among them.
  18. Schlecht ... I hope he doesn't live up to his name.
  19. pretty sure he was picked late 2nd. Giants at #86
  20. That finish was not worth staying up for till 2.15 am :( Sadly, the Cubs' offense wasn't either.
  21. Grabow would have been too obvious
  22. Well, when they come play here it will be like watching amateur baseball By both teams, unfortunately.
