  1. It's less in Euros 8-)
  2. Indeed - I was kinda already expecting this move this time last year. The Cubs did make sure they had another Italian in the system before cutting ties though. 8-)
  3. I guess they are still too young to have seen girls indoor soccer. Or the Lingerie Football League. (don't ask ...)
  4. Someone didn't do his homework.
  5. An interesting read on the economics of EPL soccer: Is Football's Gravy Train Slowing Down?
  6. You just want to join the Orange Madness on Museum Square.
  7. That's an understatement. The way he drew the PK was excellent, but that was simply a lousy attempt.
  8. Ken Rosenthal has it "in the $20 million range" Not sure what he means by "range", but 3/20 sounds OK to me.
  9. The Mineo kid we signed this past summer went to the Australian summer league, so that's probably where they'd all go most likely. Depends on the organization. Of the 17 young Dutchmen (actually, Dutch passport holders - only 4 of them were born in The Netherlands) that signed pro contracts last year, 5 started in the VSL (Mariners and Cardinals), and the rest in the DSL (Red Sox and Mets, mainly) The lone Belgian signing (Mets) also started in the DSL
  10. Even the approach to prospects signed outside of Latin America may have influenced this decision. Some other teams sign very young guys in Europe and Asia and then send them to their DR academies for instruction prior to bringing them to the US for rookie ball. Afaik, the Cubs haven't done that up till now; obviously, such an approach requires adequate facilities in the DR - maybe that's part of the reasoning behind this investment.
  11. I want more women's beach volleyball on TV. 8-)
  12. FYI Justine Henin officially retired today due to lingering injuries (exactly one year after attempting her comeback) With her typical "Ardennais" character, that musty have been a difficult call, but the right one to make, imho.
  13. To replace Todd Collins? I don't think you'll get too many complaints.
  14. Hey, Mark Peel. Who's Mark Peel? Used to be a regular around here who went by mlpeel. Really knowledgeable guy with prospects. He in fact was co-founder of the site along with Tim. His interests were primarily in the minor league system and he had a newsletter devoted to the system hosted here. Click on "members" - his name is on the first page. In red. 8-)
  15. I hope that's just a joke.
  16. Just to confirm: I regularly get this problem when I try to read the forum in the morning (which would indeed be the middle of the night across the pond) Hitting the refresh button is sometimes enough, but on other occasions I need to wait - I figured it was server maintenance or something like that (which you would expect at downtime hours for regular users)
  17. Santo to get statue outside Wrigley
  18. The Cubs have two better options available (Castillo and Ramirez), so this seems like an extremely cautious insurance move against ST mishaps.
  19. Indeed, Gooch to FC Twente on loan for the rest of the season is official. It became official one day after Twente got confirmation that defender Nicky Kuiper was out long-term with a knee injury (forcing their hand, imho). I guess that also ensures Gooch gets a lot of playing time (especially since the coach knows him very well from two seasons together at Liège)
  20. To me, this is part of the key to understand the rationale of this trade. It's possible the Cubs think that there's something about Archer's command issues they (as an organisation) can't fix - so selling high on him makes sense. It's also possible they've seen something in Garza they think they can still improve. At this point, I'm both confused and intrigued by this trade. It looks like an opportunity gamble more than like a part of a grand scheme.
  21. There's a window in the Cubs' schedule between 07/26 and 08/04 when they play away games only. Assuming the EPL would start in the 08/13-14 weekend, with the Charity Shield (or whatever it's called nowadays) in the previous weekend, a game at Wrigley involving ManU could be fitted in, I suppose.
  22. FC Twente is coached by Michel Preud'homme, who knows Onyewu very well from their time at Standard Liège. My guess is Gooch will be getting a lot of playing time from him if the deal goes through. The Dutch media seem to still be sceptical today, citing only the Washington Post as the source of the rumour.
  23. At some point, the Cubs are going to need a longer-term solution at first base. If Pena is extended in to 2012, it means they haven't found that solution.
  24. That depends on where they spend New Year's Eve. Great list, thanks.
  25. He's not on any of the Venezuelan rosters, where you would expect him to play.
