  1. Nice set of games in the next CL round coming out of the draw, with Inter v Bayern and Arsenal v Barça the pick of the lot. Also, in the EL, Anderlecht v Ajax will be fun (and a traffic nightmare in Brussels)
  2. That could be fun when the orange army hits town. http://www.sportressofblogitude.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/dutch-fans1.jpg
  3. RIP, Ron Santo. Listening to games half way across the world will never be the same again.
  4. Someone please hide that list from the Cubs' management
  5. In the case of SA, the automatic qualifying of the host nation was also questioned as "borderline", although in hindsight the Bafana Bafana played quite well (I certainly enjoyed watching them). It's obvious to everyone who knows anything about soccer that automatic qualifying in the case of Qatar is absolutely ridiculous. They will probably avoid the toughest opponents (courtesy of FIFA's infamous "guided draw" grouping system), but I can only hope they get trashed anyway in all of their games. Their participation has "sporting disaster" written all over it. Even North Korea was ranked higher prior to this year's WC and we all know how that turned out (and they earned the right to play there trough proper qualifying)
  6. Qatar are 113th on the current FIFA rankings (out of a total of 203), nicely boxed in below the Central African Republic and above Thailand. They have a friendly against Estonia scheduled for 12/22, which might give some indication of just how bad they are.
  7. Today's farce raises an interesting question: who, other than maybe China, will even want to bid for 2026?
  8. Easy now, I have fond memories of Haiti in the '74 World Cup. Taking the lead against Italy This might be exactly FIFA's reasoning: as almost nobody will want to go watch games in Qatar, the TV broadcasting rights will go through the roof (as will FIFA's bank account) Both decisions were only about money, that much is obvious.
  9. Neither do I, but I've heard talk about them building air-conditioned stadiums. Seriously.
  10. Wasn't he under contract? Does that mean the Cubs gave the Yankees permission to talk to him?
  11. Belgium has some really nice young attacking players. Could be an international sleeper in the years to come. Both goals were scored by Lukaku, who has been a regular for Anderlecht for over a year now and is still only 17. More than half of yesterday's starting eleven (and 5 of the 7 reserves) are 23 or younger - this generation has shown promise for a while but this is the first time they have actually delivered (i.e. looked good as a team and get a result)
  12. Good for him - he wouldn't have made the 25 out of spring training and he's out of options. Best of luck to Micah.
  13. Very nice 0-2 victory away against Russia today for Belgium. It's only a friendly, but Russia is still ranked 13th on the FIFA list.
  14. i'll get some scouting reports when they play the perth heat, haha Brisbane visits on 2nd-4th December 2010 and Melbourne on 20-22nd January 2011
  15. Australian Baseball League got going last week with a couple of Cubs minor leaguers on the rosters: For the Brisbane Bandits: RHP Ryan Searle (Peoria Chiefs) For the Melbourne Aces: LHP Cody Hams (AZL Cubs)
  16. Both Fuld and Hoffpauir are out of options, that's why I think they will be removed from the 40 man unless they are traded. They (especially Hoffpauir) fill roles that require flexibility; being out of options kinda makes them unattractive to the Cubs, imho.
  17. I lol'd at Muskat ... again. http://muskat.mlblogs.com/ Unless Sandberg is on a multi-year deal with the Cubs organization, the Phillies don't need to request anything.
  18. Tim Marchman on the SI site: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/tim_marchman/11/05/nl.central.hot.stove.forecast/index.html#ixzz14UpGgSsD Cubs are on 2nd page.
  19. I'd appreciate that because I've always liked Sacha. He's not international quality right now due to our depth at CM, but he was a very good MLS player and I like his creativity and soccer brain. I like what I've seen of him - even if he does play for the "enemy" (me being a Bruges fan).
  20. It appears they've been doing a lot of work with him away from the games. Given that the team has been struggling in the league the past couple of weeks, and played great in a different system yesterday (4-4-2 in stead of 4-3-3), I expect to see him as a regular in the team for the next games. Anderlecht has a home game on Sunday, a domestic cup tie next Wednesday (against a lower division side) and the play away to the league leaders (Genk) on 10/31. I'll keep you guys posted on his performances.
  21. Sachja Kljestan played the full 90 minutes in Anderlechts 3-0 victory over AEK Athens yesterday. He played an important part in the first goal (Boussoufa scored on the rebound from his shot) and got good comments in the press reports today.
  22. If you're right, it will mean he'll get decent results in 2011 and 2012 despite Hendry being GM, which would be fine with me. I think Quade is a good fit for the team in the state it's in now, so I'm fine with this hire.
  23. If you mean a European country organizing the tournament, then the answer is yes, since all four bids are from Europe. As to which team will win in 2018, who knows? :)
  24. The US chances may depend on the perception of the 2014 tournament in Brazil being on the "American continent". But I agree with your view that it's between the US and Australia. The 2018 one is between England and Russia, imho.
  25. Not necessarily. Keeping Hendry could mean Ricketts thinks the cost of firing him doesn't outweigh the benefits right now.
