  1. Lest we also forget the Tigers also have Casey and Shelton at first/ DH and Granderson, Thames, Monroe, and Ordonez in the OF. It seemed like a logjam, and he wasn't going to get much playing time. Also, IIRC, he's due to earn about $8-9 mil next year, which is an awful lot for a bench player.
  2. Does anyone know where I could find the video of BBTN's all time Cubs web gems, or at least a video clip of Sarge Jr's catch that was number 2 on the list? ESPN.com doesnt have it, and neither does youtube, unless I missed something.
  3. The link to the story about the Cubs victory today over the Giants: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap;_ylt=AurrgLO03hUmbfv2HtXy2L0RvLYF?gid=260305116&prov=ap ooops
  4. per Rotoworld: Scott McClain-1B-Athletics Sep. 1 - 3:13 pm et Veteran third baseman Scott McClain was named the Pacific Coast League's MVP on Thursday. McClain, 34, won the honors despite a .252/.312/.464 line in 532 at-bats. All that really mattered apparently was that he had 106 RBI. Portland's Jon Knott and Jack Cust and Tucson's Alberto Callaspo were among several players who would have been better choices. There was a time not long ago that McClain would have been a fine bench player or stopgap third baseman in the majors. However, he's past his prime now, and it's unlikely that he'll have a legitimate chance of making a team next spring.
  5. b/c he can play multiple positions and he can catch the ball
  6. Per Rotoworld: Glendon Rusch - Relief Pitcher Aug. 21 - 9:27 am et Glendon Rusch (tennis elbow) is close to being able to rejoin the Cubs. Rusch was able to be activated from the disabled list on Aug. 18, but he needed a few more days to heal. He could rejoin the Cubs bullpen during this week. Source: Chicago Sun-Times
  7. Yeah, you had it backwards..I was the one with Giambi. oops
  8. If he can hit like he can sing, I think we're golden. :D BTW, the Black Crowes are awesome.
  9. It is possible. A few years back we had another crappy lefty we got someone to take off our hands in a waiver trade in August. He went by the name of Jeff Fassero.
  10. Didnt see this posted here, Rotoworld's take: Chris Robinson-C- Cubs Aug. 20 - 4:06 pm et Cubs acquired catcher Chris Robinson from the Tigers for infielder Neifi Perez. Robinson, a 2005 third-round pick, was hitting .288/.338/.367 for Single-A Lakeland. A quality defender, he might have a future as a major league backup. He probably won't hit enough to become a regular. Neifi Perez-2B- Tigers Aug. 20 - 3:57 pm et Tigers acquired infielder Neifi Perez from the Cubs for catcher Chris Robinson. The Tigers needed some infield insurance after losing Placido Polanco, but this was the worst possible choice. Perez, 33, was hitting .254/.266/.343 in 236 at-bats for the Cubs, and he's no longer the Gold Glove-caliber infielder he once was. Not only is he barely worthy of a roster spot these days, but he's due to make $2.5 million next season, making him a big negative even before considering that the Tigers gave up their third-round pick from 2005 to get him. GM Dave Dombrowski should have done better. BTW, I rejoiced mightily upon hearing news of the trade.
  11. I think you are offering too much for Giambi. If you need to improve your team's BA, Giambi and his .250-.260 BA won't really help. Pettite has been better recently and Francis is having a good season, and since it's a keeper league, you should hold on to Francis. He's a good young pitcher. If you are gonna go through with this deal, try and acquire another pitcher in the trade, or another player you are in desparate need of.
  12. Mac Suzuki, there's a name for ya. He used to pitch for the Royals and Brewers IIRC. He's well over 30, and is filler. Shouldnt be a consideration for a callup at anypoint the rest of his career. Didn't Brian Reith used to be a Reds prospect?
  13. I had an arguement with my brother yesterday in regards to who is the better second baseman, Chase Utley or Robinson Cano. I say it's Utley, he says it is "by far" Cano. I thought I'd post the question here to see what everyone here thinks.
  14. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/442884p-373046c.html There's the link to a story in the NY Daily News about the Papalbon brothers.
  15. What a shame. Jackson used to be my favorite Cubs prospect. He's really fallen off due to injuries. I hope he gets back on his feet next year.
  16. If that's the case why bother? Why bring him back for the last month of the season? We already know what he can do, I would rather them play the kids and let Miller waste the rest of his year rehabbing. The genreal consensus is that no one is certain if his velocity has fully returned. He has shown in his rehab starts that his velocity isn't up to par with what it was before his surgery. There is a chance the Cubs might release him at the end of the season if he isn't recovered yet.
  17. Per Rotoworld: Wade Miller-S- Cubs Aug. 10 - 8:37 am et Wade Miller (shoulder) will make a start Double-A West Tennessee on Friday. Miller pitched well during his last rehab start so hopefully he can have a good outing on Friday. He will like need a few more quality rehab starts before the Cubs will consider activating him from the disabled list. Source: Chicago Sun-Times
  18. ...that come August, we would play a series in which our starters were Carlos Marmol, Angel Guzman, and Rich Hill?
  19. This is starting to turn into a thread belonging in the fantasy forum.
  20. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/stats/player.php?id=502533 Granted, it's his first season and its only at short season, but he is tearing it up at Boise. What are his projections/ potential? I assume we should wait to see what he can do at the higher leagues until we label him as a "prospect", but those are pretty good numbers.
  21. Berkman, Beltran, Rivera. Dunn, Lee, Sizemore Dye, Miggy Cabrera, and Corey Patterson #-o
  22. Wilson I wouldn't mind at all. I'd like to see him in a Cub uniform. The same goes for Melky. The kid has potential and is fairly young too, and has good plate discipline, especially for his age at the major league level. I watch him play all the time b/c I'm right in Yankee territory, and he could be a star. The Yanks won't have room for him as a starter though, unless Bernie retires, Sheffield leaves as a FA, and Matsui or Abreu becomes the DH. I would like him on the team, but the Yankees won't give him up. They've learned their lesson about giving uip young players. Three years ago we could have gotten him, but not now unless we offer the Yankees Carlos Zambrano, which is out of the question. Quinlin is interesting. Yes, he can his, but he dosn't take too many walks. As far as I'm concerned, he is no more than an adequate utility player. That said, I would prefer him next year over Mabry again. The fact that Quinlin can play 1B, 3B, and OF is helpful, and he's younger, a better hitter, and probably cheaper than Mabry. Your thinking isn't that bad, but a starting outfield of Wilson, Cabrera, and Quinlin isn't a very strong one.
  23. Let's assume you are right and that is the rotation. Let's also assume that the payroll is around $100M. Then, Hendry will still have approx. $24M that he can spend - what's/who's he spending it on? Unfortuantely, he'll probably give Bynum and Blanco Neifi-like extensions, give Pierre a 3 year extension worth about $20 mil and put the rest in his pocket, saying we look like a good team.
  24. I was browsing through past deadline deals on baseballreference.com and found this: July 25, 2001 (Standings) The Kansas City Royals traded Jermaine Dye to the Colorado Rockies for Neifi Perez. Think we should make that deal now?
  25. Yes, they are both very good defensively, and we now have one of the best fielding middle infields in the NL. However, they both struggle at the plate. On a team with good offense, it would be easy to hide players like Ronny and Izturis in the lineup. We don't have a great offense, so therefore, while our defensive improves, the offense continues to get worse. This trade also increases the chances that one oif Neifi, Izturis, and Cedeno will be batting in the 2 hole on a regular basis.
