I feel like laughing at this, but really, they're only one year deals and both player can still produce. Damon won't make up for Crawford's production, but Manny will be a much better DH than Willy Aybar.
This is such a god awful trade for the Angels. Even if Wells plays as well as he did last year, they're hands are still tied financially because of his contract. That the Blue Jays got something of value and didn't have to chip in any money makes this incredibly lopsided. Heck, who knows, maybe Juan Rivera goes back to hitting .280 with 25 homers and makes this trade even worse for the Angels.
I still have my 2001 Baseball America Prospect Handbook that lists that as our infield of the future. For the record, it also listed Juan Cruz, Ben Christiensen and John Webb as future members of our rotation and Zambrano as our future closer.
So for Gorz, we got: a high-upside 21 year-old outfielder, a reliever who could contribute to the pen within the next year or two and a young pitcher with some raw talent despite little results. Not bad, actually pretty darn good. More than I thought we'd get for Gorzelanny, no doubt.
Yeah he's old for his level, but he seems to have a pretty decent K/BB ratio. If he can handle AA, maybe he'll finish the year in AAA or sneak into the pen in September somehow. Pretty big leap, but he seems to have some upside.
Eh, he was fairly average. A 99 ERA+ in his time here. Too inconsistent. He was cheap and is still young, but as someone said earlier, he is just as likely to post a 5+ ERA next year as he be a decent No. 4 starter. I wouldn't have minded keeping him, but getting value for him makes me feel good about this trade. And it removes some competition in Cashner's way for a rotation spot, which also makes it hard to dislike this deal.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/organization-top-10-prospects/2011/2611097.html I'm betting the outfielder is AAA filler or a raw 19 year old. If we get one of the pitchers in their top 10 this deal looks pretty good. I liked Gorz, but I never thought we were gonna keep him for very long.
Yes, Colvin strikes out a lot. Yes he doesn't walk a whole lot. But he can still be a valuable player. Not a perennial all star, but a .260/.320/.480 line with 20-30 homers is possible. I know the hate probably comes from how much the front office loves him, but it's hard to see why some people flame him like he's Troy O'Leary.
They got rid of Brendan Ryan so they needed to get more grit. DEAR GOD, could you imagine that middle infield of Theriot, Ryan, Punto and Miles if they kept Ryan? Bring back Eckstein and they'd have the worst infield ever. Would negate the runs Pujols creates. But at least they'd play the game the right way.
I'd love for the rotation to be Z, Garza, Demp, Wells, Cash with Gorz traded or in middle relief and Silva just flat out gone. That rotation with a pen of: Gorz, Guzman, Marshall, Wood, Marmol and one of Grabow/Gaub/Berg/Russell/etc would be pretty decent.
How can you possibly forget about Shark??!? Gorz has been on the block for well over a month, wouldn't be shocked if he were moved for prospects eventually. Yeah, I could easily see him being dealt in the near future with this trade near completion. Heck, maybe the Yanks will overpay since Pettitte told them this morning they should basically forget him for now.
Or Hellickson. Or Wade Davis. I'd be happy with Davis, especially if we let them take Carlos Silva off our hands. Seriously, he's putting a real drain on the pitching staff now. Anyone think we'll just cut him?
You gotta be kidding me. I don't care about Chirinos or Guyer. But I would've liked to hold onto Lee and Archer. I'm more annoyed at seeing Archer included. I hope Garza doesn't have a bad year. How long is he under team control? Anyone know?
What does Demp need to bounce back from? 3.85 ERA/3.89 xFIP/1.32 WHIP are all right in line with his Cub career. Yeah, I don't what people expect, but Dempster has actually been pretty good. I never expected him to post a 2.95 ERA again.
So what happens to Michael Young? He's getting up there in age but can still hit. I'm not saying we should try to trade for him, though, since his contract is ridiculous and we have enough of those already.
