  1. Pettitte was a really good pitcher and, by all accounts, a good guy and a good teammate. But he's definitely not a Hall of Famer, and it's nice to see most writers/news outlets agreeing with that sentiment instead of bowing down to another Yankee "great."
  2. I like Newton a lot. At this point, if the Titans take a first round QB, I want it to be Newton or Gabbert. Both due to their upside. And I'm actually a really big fan of Devlin. Stanzi is probably a decent starter as his ceiling, but I see Devlin as a guy with quite a bit of upside. He could be a better version of Joe Flacco. Kaepernick has the highest upside of any QB in the draft, though, I think. Kid has an absolute cannon of an arm and he's probably pretty competitive athletically with Newton. Agreed, I'd be thrilled if the Titans or Vikings took Kapernick. I like what I've seen from him. I wouldn't mind Gabbert either. But I feel like he'll be gone early. So I'm just hoping we don't jump all over the Cam Newton hype train.
  3. Not where they currently are. What about trading down and taking Locker, though? Might feel more comfortable if they could take him lower. The interest level in Locker will probably depend on the new coaching staff. I was hearing Fisher and his scouts were high on Locker, but if Munchak is the new coach, I don't know if he's as high on Locker. With each passing day I'm warming up more and more to the idea of filling a defensive need with the 8th pick and taking Devlin/Stanzi/Dalton/Kaepernick in the second round. Feel the same about the Titans as the Vikings. Not high on Locker or Newton. Keep forgetting Stanzi and Devlin. They don't have very high upside, but I can see them being very capable starters for awhile.
  4. Locker's accuracy scares the crap outta me. The Vikings thought they had a good leader at QB this year. A lot of good that did. I'd much prefer Kapernick. Rumors are they want Vince Young short term and draft a QB. If they are deadset on that, I'd prefer that scenario. Just not too high on Locker. Or Newton for that matter.
  5. Yes, that career minor league OPS of .708 is getting the job done. Theriot had some bad minor league numbers and he managed a few decent big league season. He's still not a good player but he played better in the big leagues. Not saying Barney will follow suit but can't rule it out.
  6. Looper can earn $3 million this year if he makes the roster and stays there all season. Seems pretty unlikely but who knows.
  7. Auggie Doggie. Does this mean Don Baylor is back in the organization? I can't see any other reason why we signed his favorite bench player.
  8. So in the end, the Blue Jays turned Wells into Rivera, Francisco and cash considerations. Still a pretty solid deal.
  9. Dumb. They'll probably be better than Barney, but I'd be worried about them getting too many at bats. If Cabrera wants to sign for a mil, get only about 100-150 at bats and mentor Castro in the field, I wouldn't mind that much at all. But I feel like that's just wishful thinking.
  10. That was quick. Playing in Arlington, Napoli might hit 30 this year.
  11. I'm assuming (hoping) this is nothing more than organizational depth and he'll likely be at AAA in case of injury.
  12. I like what I've seen/heard, but didn't do the same things for Piniella? Not getting too excited just yet.
  13. I feel like laughing at this, but really, they're only one year deals and both player can still produce. Damon won't make up for Crawford's production, but Manny will be a much better DH than Willy Aybar.
  14. This is such a god awful trade for the Angels. Even if Wells plays as well as he did last year, they're hands are still tied financially because of his contract. That the Blue Jays got something of value and didn't have to chip in any money makes this incredibly lopsided. Heck, who knows, maybe Juan Rivera goes back to hitting .280 with 25 homers and makes this trade even worse for the Angels.
  15. I still have my 2001 Baseball America Prospect Handbook that lists that as our infield of the future. For the record, it also listed Juan Cruz, Ben Christiensen and John Webb as future members of our rotation and Zambrano as our future closer.
  16. Baseball America on the trade: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/majors/trade-central/2011/2611163.html
  17. So for Gorz, we got: a high-upside 21 year-old outfielder, a reliever who could contribute to the pen within the next year or two and a young pitcher with some raw talent despite little results. Not bad, actually pretty darn good. More than I thought we'd get for Gorzelanny, no doubt.
  18. Yeah he's old for his level, but he seems to have a pretty decent K/BB ratio. If he can handle AA, maybe he'll finish the year in AAA or sneak into the pen in September somehow. Pretty big leap, but he seems to have some upside.
  19. Eh, he was fairly average. A 99 ERA+ in his time here. Too inconsistent. He was cheap and is still young, but as someone said earlier, he is just as likely to post a 5+ ERA next year as he be a decent No. 4 starter. I wouldn't have minded keeping him, but getting value for him makes me feel good about this trade. And it removes some competition in Cashner's way for a rotation spot, which also makes it hard to dislike this deal.
  20. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/organization-top-10-prospects/2011/2611097.html I'm betting the outfielder is AAA filler or a raw 19 year old. If we get one of the pitchers in their top 10 this deal looks pretty good. I liked Gorz, but I never thought we were gonna keep him for very long.
  21. Fantastic. Pujols is gonna hit 40 home runs and finish with about 70 RBI on the season.
  22. I don't see a problem with it being a minor league deal. I don't really see how he fits into the big league roster either unless injury strikes.
  23. Yes, Colvin strikes out a lot. Yes he doesn't walk a whole lot. But he can still be a valuable player. Not a perennial all star, but a .260/.320/.480 line with 20-30 homers is possible. I know the hate probably comes from how much the front office loves him, but it's hard to see why some people flame him like he's Troy O'Leary.
  24. They got rid of Brendan Ryan so they needed to get more grit. DEAR GOD, could you imagine that middle infield of Theriot, Ryan, Punto and Miles if they kept Ryan? Bring back Eckstein and they'd have the worst infield ever. Would negate the runs Pujols creates. But at least they'd play the game the right way.
