  1. L. Gonzalez ARI 22, 23 glad i benched gonzalez for a guy who's had four at bats this week.
  2. mulder's trying to make carpenter feel better about his start.
  3. maybe the worst 1-2 major league baseball has ever seen. i can't, for the life of me, figure out why lee is like 70th in the league in times at plate w/ a runner on base.
  4. oh, i'm sure you're right. i'm just a lot more worried about your offense than i am your pitching for some reason. that, or i'm not as big on my offense as you are. and i figured i had the pen advantage because two of my guys are still in the hunt, and the third won't take any save chances off. on the other hand, toronto's playing the yankees (and the red sox next?), the nats have fallen out of it, and izzy may get some rest down the stretch.
  5. interesting #'s... i actually think the gap between your offense and mine is bigger than the gap between your pitching and mine... the offensive totals are close despite abreu, wright and pujols having below average weeks. of course, i'm playing a man short w/ dellucci not playing. i think your offense is waaay better than mine. on the other hand, i think our pitching is a little closer than one would think. i don't have any aces like you do, but i have a bunch of #3's that usually give me six innings. the only area i have the clear edge is the bullpen. my pen has won games for me all season, and they're winning this one for me now. however, i don't feel the slightest bit comfortable, even with a 40+ point lead, in a matchup that lasts another week.
  6. I watched a TON of games pre-2004 and although Joe had good numbers overall, he was rarely if ever a dominant closer. I can recall many many games that he closed where he allowed a hit or two and a walk and a number of the outs were line drives at someone. Don't get me wrong, I really liked Joe Borowski - it's easy to like a guy who's toiled in the minors for a long time, worked hard to get to where he wanted to be and took advantage of it for as long as he could, it's just that I personally never felt he was a closer that struck fear in opposing batters hearts. He's a great guy and a super "underdog" pitcher to root for, but the term "smoke and mirrors" definitely applied to him many times. borowski was a dominant pitcher during those two years with the cubs. he was tough to hit and struck out a bunch of guys...he just did it w/o throwing 98, so people like to say he wasn't dominant. w/o looking up #'s or thinking too hard about it, i'd bet that his two year run is better than any two year run by any cub bullpen arm this decade.
  7. If Carp doesn't straighten out, the Cards and I may both come up short of our goals. and make me very happy...on both counts! wagner nails down a huge save for me and an even bigger save for the phils...what a comeback for them!
  8. 23 straight QS for carpenter followed by three straight non-QS/terrible starts. good thing he got all those complete games in the middle of june!
  9. damn, matsui could have really made the yankee game a good one for me... bonds in coors for the weekend... 8-[
  10. it's a stretch to say i'm one of those, let alone both. and good luck w/ the job, uk. keep us posted. the last time you abandoned a team, they were in the championship in two short years. :D
  11. why further wreck Hill's confidence at this point? who's to say he'd pitch poorly? can't just not play him for the rest of the year to make sure his feelings don't get hurt. and i'd rather see him out there today than have him be asked to throw three innings after sitting for a month.
  12. wouldn't it suck if patterson got thrown out stealing and soto didn't get his ab?
  13. gah...wuertz coming in. i was hoping for hill.
  14. he made a great play on berkman's ball so it kinda evens out...but not really.
  15. 130 to 130 looks plenty tight to me. yeah, but i'll go down three or four over night. still a great battle, though. i need delucci's pansy ass to get out there and play!
  16. damn...a QS from weaver would have really tightened things up. i need some more offense from my west coast guys...
  17. i say griffey's in. one more year like this year and he's a lock. in my mind, ruth is by far the best hitter of all time. look at what he did compared to the guys he was playing with. if you think bonds' #'s dwarf his peers... ruth's career obp: .474 league average obp: .353 ruth's career slg: .690 league average slg: .400 bonds' career obp: .443 league average obp: .331 bonds' career slg: .611 league average slg: .407 and bonds cheated for ?? years.
  18. when ruth was playing against all white players, so was everybody else. when bonds was using steroids, not everybody else was using them. he had control over the advantage that he gained, ruth did not.
  19. of course not. lifting weights isn't illegal. yes he did. steroids are illegal.
  20. stabbing the first base ump and urinating on the mascot isn't illegal under baseball rules either...but you can't do either of those things. steroids are illegal (by america rule book standards), and they gave him an unfair advantage over other players. he probably would have been a HOFer w/o the steroids, but we can never know for sure. if he took them. Which hasn't been proven. Innocent until proven guilty He admitted taking them. He said he just didn't know they were steroids. He was told it was magic pixie dust. Was this part of the leaked testimony? I honestly don't remember. I believe it was. Except for the Pixiedust. So, to be technical, everyone is indicting him on a piece of testimony that wasn't meant to be made public, and which the courts have chosen not to act on to this point. MMMkay. they're acting on it...i thought his testimony involved the BALCO situation. you're being extremely generous in giving bonds the benefit of the doubt. he admitted, under oath, that he took steroids. it wasn't supposed to get out, but that doesn't take away from the reliability of the testimony. it's not like a game of telephone where what he said may have gotten distorted.
  21. victorinio picked a good time for his first homer...two days in a row the phils have put up four in the top half of an inning in a late tie game.
  22. you may as well just make that your sig. i'm right about pretty much everything.
  23. stabbing the first base ump and urinating on the mascot isn't illegal under baseball rules either...but you can't do either of those things. steroids are illegal (by america rule book standards), and they gave him an unfair advantage over other players. he probably would have been a HOFer w/o the steroids, but we can never know for sure.
  24. He was a great hitter before the spike in numbers. They helped him, there's no doubt. But, he had the best bat speed before the spike in numbers, similar to Griffey. I'm not going to ignore what he's done. He went from a great hitter to the greatest hitter, he was still a great hitter. i agree...but i'm not willing to give a cheater the benefit of the doubt when trying to figure out his non-roid numbers. instead of trying to speculate as to what day he started taking steroids and judge his career by saying 'well, what did he do before steroids?' or 'just how many homeruns did steroids add to his career total?' i just consider him to be a cheater.
  25. He's always used a bat shorter and lighter than the normal ones used by sluggers, and still chokes up on it. Amazingly fast bat speed + unbelivable pitch recognition = best hitter of our era. if steroids didn't help him, then why did he take them? from some of you guys' analysis, you make it seem they're totally irrelevant to his success. he must have felt they were doing some good. I'm not sure this is the best argument to make. Some players cork bats because they think it helps, despite the fact that it really doesn't help. I'm not saying steroids don't help. Just pointing out that a player might do something because they think it will give them an advantage, whether it actually does or not. I do agree that steroids have probably been most beneficial to Bonds by allowing him to stay in peak physical condition at a point in his career where his body most likely wouldn't be able to handle the physical strain of a 162-game season. However, I have heard that he does work his butt off in the offseason to stay in shape. Of course, the steroids just add to that. yeah, but he must have felt that they were helping him if he continued to take them. i don't doubt bonds' great eye or lightning quick bat...he's always had those. but i'm not about to just discount his steroid use because he has a good eye at the plate. steroids helped him, he realized that they helped him, and he continued to use them. he probably would be a great hitter w/o steroids, but there's no doubt in my mind that he was made better by steroids. his size jumped, his #'s jumped, and he used them for multiple years...that's all the proof i need to know that he was aided by steroids.
