  1. Cubs lineup, for what its worth Fukudome CF Theriot SS Lee 1B Hoffpauir RF Baker 3B Fontenot 2B Scales LF Hill C Z P Wow, Fox must have run over Lous cat or something. He cant even get into the forfeit lineup. If the Pirates want to get swept, theyre going to really have to earn it. The Buccos will trot out McCutchen Young Jones Moss Pearce N. Walker Cedeno Jaramillo Hart
  2. Too bad a deal with the Brewers isnt likely because I think that Theriot and either Marshall or Gorzalanny for JJ Hardy would be a good deal for both sides.
  3. Not quite as vocal. Your average Cub fan prefers to complain about the big name big money guys, and u This has to be someone from NSBB You think this is the only place where people hate Aaron Miles? No, but your average Cubs fan isnt quite as vocal about it and would rather turn their attention to the bigger name guys like Soriano, Gregg, and Bradley when hes slumping , and this little mega turd often slips through the cracks. If you think about all the reasons why the Cubs are where they are, a little utility guy doesnt really register with a lot of people. He may well be the worst Cubs player in recent memory, but do to his limited role, most people just over look him.
  4. Theriot is the gritty little white infielder we never had. For years weve watched guys like David Eckstein, Craig Counsell, and others who I cant think of seemingly get a hit every time they came to bat against us, and wondered why we didnt have such a player. Well here he is. Im OK with him hitting for average at the top or bottom of the lineup and let the guys in the middle of the lineup put up the power numbers.
  5. I've said this before but I think Fox likely has a similar career to Russell Branyan. Both can hit well and both struggle in the field. I'm not necessarily comparing pure production, though, so much as type of player each is. AAA is full of guys in their late 20s who can hit the hell out of the ball and cant field, but the fact is, there are only 14 teams in the American League, and the rest of these guys are to get a cup of coffee every September or whenever a replacement player is needed. Jake Fox may have a leg up because he is capable of playing multple postions, though poorly and I hop he can put together a solid career somewhere.
  6. Jason Bay or Matt Holliday would both be great fits there.
  7. Heres an interesting comparrison- 2008 Mike Fontenot-in 119 games/284 PA, he hit .305/.395/.514 with 9 HR. 2009 Cub Jeff Baker-in 47 games/138 PA he hit .341/.399/.508 with 3 HR. small sample size, but impressive none the less. Very similar numbers. And on a side note, this is the sponsership for Jeff Bakers baseballreference page. This has to be someone from NSBB
  8. Looking at the last few games, where Lou hasnt seem to let Fox anywhere near the lineup, I think hes off to the AL next season where he can be a DH and occasionally spot start on the field if a player needs a day off.
  9. I love these Pirates series' when for just a few games at a time, we can sit back and pretend were watching the 2008 Cubs.
  10. What can I say, the little krauts got me hooked. On one hand, you have Fontenot who shined in a limited role, but then couldnt cut it as an everyday player. On the other hand, you have DeRosa, who was never much with the bat during his days as a uility player, but when given the chance to be an everyday player, he made it worth the while. I guess we'll have to wait and see which one Baker is, if either.
  11. The problem was never dealing DeRosa, but rather replacing him with Miles. If it makes you feel any better, you could think of Miles as Ronnie Cedeno's replacement, with the Cubs not getting any replacement for DeRosa. Yeah, it doesn't make me feel any better either. Then again, you could also consider Jeff Baker as DeRosas replacement, although too little, too late.
  12. Jay Jackson is the glaring omission, in my opinion. Maybe it means that the Cubs *gasp* have a fairly deep farm system. I too, however am puzzled to se both Carpenter and Coleman ahead of Jackson.
  13. Maybe I have a bad memory, but I seem to recall Iowa regularly signs minor league free agents/journeymen to fill open spots. If required, that shouldn't be any problem this offseason either Thats a problem with this organization. Rather than call someone up, they pick up some 30something journeyman to fill the spot. Same goes in the majors. If theyd trust the farm system more, Aaron Miles, Joey Gathright, and the 2009 edition of Paul Bako never would have had to happen.
  14. Sounds like hes either hinting that he wants to be a Cub or trying to coax the Astros into giving him a big deal. If his interest was enough that he'd take a major discount (in the $5-7 million range tops), sure. That's very unlikely, though, and otherwise he'll be too expensive. The only free agent "closers" I'd be in any way interested in would be Soriano and Wagner - and that's only because they may come cheap enough to be of interest. He really doesnt sound like he has any interest in giving anyone a disconunt. he sounds like hes tryign to bait both teams into giving him a K Rod, or at least a Fuentes type deal. IMHO, Valverde deserves as much if not more than Fuentes, but I dont know if a closer is our main focus. It would be nice to have him though. Him and Z together would be all kinds of entertaining.
  15. That makes two of us. Let me know when you're going and we'll meet up. I'm about an hour and 1/2 away. Better get there by Monday... I tried to get down there today, but I'm hindered by the "honey-do list." Have the Cubs said how they'll use him? Since Iowas season has drawn to a close and as far as I can tell, Diamond hasnt pitched Id assume that they're saving him for next year. He'll join a list of Ryan Dempster, Wade Miller, Chad Fox, and Scott Williamson as post surgical pitchers theyve tried to revive. Dempster worked out, the other 3, not so much.
  16. So then whats the Iowa pithing staff? Id have to assume that 1 of Jax, Cash, and Carp make the jump to Iowa. Im assuming the Iowa staff is composed of Diamond Atkins Samardzjia Russell/Mathes unless 1 of those guys dazzle during spring training and end up on the big league club, but that leaves 1 more spot open. I suppose Hung Wen Chen could get that spot, but Id rather see one of the other 3 get the show, depending on how they look at ST.
  17. I couldnt agree more. A lot of people look at Aaron Miles and just see a bad baseball player, when in fact, Aaron Miles is a REALLY bad baseball player.
  18. The 1st step should be to keep Jeff Baker as the everyday 2B for the remainder of this season. I know, hes a *gasp* righty, but weve all had enough of Mike Fontenot and certainly Aaron Miles. Last year, Fontenot showed flashes of brilliance in a limited role, and as a result, we went right into the season assuming he was our starter and that was that. He couldnt possibly be any worse than a .280/.350/.475 line with 15-20 HR seemed to be the general consensus. Baker is showing similar flashes as Fontenot did last year, but it would be nice to see if he can keep it up as an everyday starter. If he can, well maybe hes our 2010 2B. If not, we can shop around in the offseason.
  19. I think the offseason key should be to get less bad. Finally letting Aaron Miles go would be a nice start. And Id really rather not see any salary dumping, including but not limited to Lee, Lilly, Bradley, or Fukudome. I really hope they resist the temptation to sell high on Lee and Lilly. we can still win this thing next year, and they'll both be crucial compnents of the team and I dont think that a few prospects are worth closing this window any faster than it already is.
  20. Sounds like hes either hinting that he wants to be a Cub or trying to coax the Astros into giving him a big deal.
  21. In a perfect world, his defense woulkd push him over the borferline, but unfortunately, it doesnt work that way.
  22. Take D Lee out of the lineup, and wed be on a 6 game losing streak. What a team.
  23. Im guessing There must be some kind of bad blood between Jax and Tennessee, and they figured that his progression is more important than keeping him down to prove a point.
  24. Brian Roberts. If not, probably Jeff Baker and Mike Fontenot.
