  1. What do you mean bothering anybody? Like, as long as he's not writing a book about his life (something millions of others have done)? Or as long as he's not hitting on straight guys on the street? Or as long as he's not making little old ladies fret while heading to church? Bothering is an odd choice of word there.
  2. Actually what your post says is that the data doesn't predict what he will be in the future.
  3. What game was this from? It wasn't yesterday. Lakers wear their white jerseys on Sunday's. deadspin posted it midday yesterday talking about it from being on Friday
  4. http://deadspin.com/espns-chris-broussard-says-being-gay-is-an-open-rebel-484708467 bigots standing behind their religious mumbo jumbo he hates pre marital sex but writes about the NBA. Must be a masochist, which I think might be against the teachings the bible.
  5. Valid point and I appreciate your engagement in a mature discussion. I do feel that ESPN and other news outlets are a hype machine and unfortunately this is going to be the next big thing. I feel like some of the reality of the situation, homosexuals coming out in sports is going to be lost on Mr. Collins. He will be out of a job next season and soon, retired. It will be shocking if a GM is willing to add him to their team and if that does happen, will be a true story. Ironically enough (probably not irony) ESPN has kind of ignored the story since it was their competitor that broke it, and ESPN is all about hyping ESPN branded stories, not the actual news. Not knowing anything about this player or his ability I do think it would be shocking to some extent if somebody signs him. That is all the more reason not to question his motives and timing.
  6. If NHL coaches and Bill Belichik can completely ignore questions from major market media types in front of the camera about players' injuries when everybody knows there is an injury then I think they can teach a minor league manager to blow off questions from the Daytona news. Dealing with the media is something managers have to learn, so teach them not to answer questions about player discipline. Call it a coach's decision and be done with it. Yeah just tell them to say if they pull a guy for this stuff to say his hamstring tightened up or he's been dealing with the flu or something and if he sits the whole game just say it was a scheduled off day and he get his work in before/after the game. I wouldn't make up injuries but I would just say "scheduled off day", or some variation.
  7. that would ruin my summer
  8. The reaction to the story means it is a big story, by definition, so the notion that one "doesn't feel like it is a big story" just does not hold up to any thought. You may not personally care about it, but it is a big story. Mike Franseca is apparently doing the same thing on his radio show. The guy will talk about television rating of random games and the minutia of freaking horse racing and almost anything else, yet he tries to pretend this isn't a story worth talking about. That's pretty much just a way for him to try and hide his inner bigot. If you are willing to talk about the stories surrounding sports, and not just the x's/o's and box scores, then this is a story.
  9. It would be nice if it didn't matter and wasn't a big story. If he was the 778th player to come out that would be the case. But it does matter and it is a big story. And if other people don't like it they are entitled to their opinion but they are also entitled to know they are horrible human beings. I understand it would be newsworthy and a bigger deal if it were someone like a Steph Curry, a rising star and young player with a promising future in the league for years to come. Collins doesn't currently have a job and it wouldn't be shocking if he doesn't have one next season averaging 2 pts a game. I question his motives and timing. That is all. He's a gay man that for various reasons lived a closeted life and doesn't want to do that anymore. What is there to question? You think he's actually straight but wants the attention?

  12. I don't have a problem with this but I would prefer they tell the minor league coaches to STFU to the media about these specific situations. Let the kid know what you're doing, but don't go building up the media's case for them.
  13. Maybe if this was some juggarnaut. Unfortunately in a 4 game series you can never view 2-2 as terribly disappointing. It's more or less what you should expect, especially when your team is, at best, not too bad.
  14. I agree that is how 99% of league personnel would view the situation, because they are obsessive weirdos who really think the distraction would take away from their precious gameplanning. But I think it is a hollow excuse.
  15. Tom Rock ✔ @TomRock_Newsday I told Eli that Ryan Nassib thinks he's a durable quarterback. He looked puzzled. "He said I'm adorable?"
  16. So I know it'll never happen but I really wouldn't have a problem with Tebow as the Bears backup. I mean, the point of a backup is to have a guy who can come in and not lose the game on his own, or be a developing prospect. Tebow's prospect status is done, but I think you can win a game with him out there, doing his Tebowy thing once or twice a season if your starter is unavailable. I think the distraction nonsense is more talk and really just an annoyance to fans, rather than the team. It was a horrible situation for the Jets because Sanchez was so mediocre and they had just signed him to an unwarranted extension. He/they fell apart because Sanchez isn't any good, not because of distractions. The Cutler/Bears situation is different. He's better than Sanchez and he's in a show us situation for his contract. You have Trestman pour all he's got into Cutler and just have Tebow holding clipboards until the moment arises when you need him for a game, and then gameplan for his style one week. I don't see that as any worse than having some other hack do his poor man's Jay Cutler impersonation and fail miserably at it.

  21. I don't think it needs to be a superstar, just a good player still in his prime. Marginal players at the end of their career are typically brought in to fill a hole and be a quiet professional. Even non-bigoted coaches/GMs could avoid such a player simply for the "don't want the distraction" angle. and yes I giggled a little as I wrote "fill a hole" in a story about gay players. I am awful.
  22. It'll be interesting to see if that prompts other athletes to come out. With this and the NFL story, it's clear more are on the way to coming out. =D> You mean Ayenbadejo saying that there's 4 that are going to come out? Yep, I think it is awesome. He backed off that story.
  23. Not in the "big four pro sports" discussion. But gay female athletes has been something out in the open for quite some time.
  24. not sure what that means
  25. I can't imagine it would make much of a difference but is there a difference in the quality of LHP he faces? Is he a guy Dale will let face the marginal LHers but absolutely sit against the really good ones?
