  1. Start with a baseline of building a new "state of the art" stadium costing $1B and then dealing with selling off/devaluation of their Wrigleyville assets and I think it is quite easy to see how moving could be tough. Communities are willing to hand over the land, but they aren't going to build them the stadium. You also might have a baseline of support of as much as 500,000 tickets sold per season based only on the fact that it is Wrigley Field.
  2. That would be ridiculously expensive, with having to buy not only the real estate but also the revenue streams attached to it. But also would provide the Cubs with additional revenue sources. There are 16 official Wrigley Rooftops. You're looking at, probably $200MM at least and that's at market value, not "we're trying to [expletive] you over because we hate each other" value. They'd financially probably be better off waiting until the contract runs out to do any renovations. I really wonder if "all the buildings" is really necessary to change the equation. Seems to me that only a handful are actually affected.
  3. That's an interesting way of putting it.
  4. I actually think Hendry would have been a better GM with tight fiscal restraints. He did a good job building up the farm system when that was his focus. If he didn't have the money and the mandate to spend big at the major league level, he may have continued to focus on building through the farm. It's all guesswork now, though. He could have built a solid pitching staff, but without money the team wouldn't have scored a run a game. Although he or his staff was responsible for drafting/acquiring our #1 rated prospect, plus 3 other top tens, 2 more guys from the best 25 and under list and the guy who was used to acquire another top ten under 25.
  5. The two new guys are a combined 118 years old with about 75 years of coaching experience. I have to think there is a reason behind that, like they felt their staff was very inexperienced, and maybe somewhat disrespected by the veteran players. The two guys they replaced were both around 40 with only about a decade of coaching each.
  6. Somebody please explain* to me how anybody could view the Cubs pursuit of Tanaka as anything resembling "puzzling". (*please don't actually explain, the entire concept is stupid and any explanation would be doubly so). Haugh has proven time and time again that when he took that "In The Wake Of The News" promotion, he took idiot pills as required by all that write that column. I mean, if they did sign him he's writing about how they had no choice and really had to do it, right?

  8. It's not required, but if you try sooner than that you might not be able to sustain the success and instead you'll be terrible for five years. In order to avoid risking five terrible years, we must have five terrible years. I think a minimal definition for consistent success should be no consecutive sub .500 seasons. But we can only start counting after consecutive .500 seasons so these years don't count.
  9. Gibberish. If you seriously want to debate this stuff just say so and I'll make a thread. Did you just hit me with the "COME AT ME BRO!!" ? "Meet me in the parking lot after school and bring your friends!" Wow. You take an invitation to debate the topics you're being so defensive about as some kind of threat? You realize I'm talking about posting things on a message board, right? Man, that's weird. It was quite shocking when the truther interpreted a straight forward statement in a convoluted manner.
  10. Yeah. Some are dumb ditzes, some are successful professionals. And some dance at Mons Venus.
  11. But again, they aren't punishing him for positive tests. They're punishing him for lying to them and obstructing the investigation A completely sketchy and unethical investigation.
  12. Miami could double their payroll with those winning.
  13. To be fair, Crawford has been extremely average since coming back and got a pretty much undeserved contract extension in the offseason. People were down on Crawford well before Raanta was involved. The gap presently and going forward is far greater between Cutler and McCown than Crawford and Raanta or really many other goalies in the NHL. Plus Raanta is a young prospect and Crawford was not some highly touted stud. This is nothing like Cutler McCown and the comparison was idiotic.
  14. Individual tickets went on sale March 8th last year, so you can expect something similar to be announced in February. As for atmosphere, I think the only area where you purposefully sit for atmosphere is the bleachers. That used to be the cheap seats where young people would go drink, make out and pass out. They became a hot item and regularly sold for over $100 on secondary market during the good times. You can probably get them for free this season. If you want to sit in the sun and drink and socialize, do the bleachers. If you want to enjoy the game a bit more do the grandstands. Upper deck toward the front are probably the best value. If the team sucks, do not expect good atmosphere. And the beginning of May could vary from freezing rain to sunny and beautiful. So be prepared.
  15. Which is wiped out by arb raises. BR has an estimated 70.5M committed for 2015, though this would include Shark's Arb 3 estimate. So with 25M to play with, SP and OF being the only overwhelming needs, and the pathetic rumored returns for Samardzija, yes, I'd extend Shark Eh, I don't think Samardzija is actually going to be all that good for the next few years, and with it being so obvious that Tanaka was going to be a one off, I could go either way here. He's there's to use for the next two years anyway. I see very little value in extending him, unless you think you will need to extend him to convince others to come here. But I just don't see other players viewing Samardzija as that type of player.
  16. I don't get what you mean. MLB was trying to suspend him without pay for like a year and a half, costing him $30m. Their punishment was going to be above and beyond what the CBA called for. He was fighting for the right to be treated fairly under the rules and save several million.
  17. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/leader.cgi?type=bat&id=8da34e1e BRef used lower threshold to qualify.
  18. Kemp? What about Hamels? If Philly really takes a dump, they could. But they have a crap ton of revenue coming in now and can easily afford to keep him while trying to rebuild with other things. I don't really see them wanting to move him, plus it would probably take a whole hell of a lot of talent. So, not a true salary dump.
  19. He's so good at hitting, that if he had a position he'd be in the discussion for top 4. What about the fact that his OPS was 25th in the Midwest League last year? I get the theory that his bat would place him very high if he actually played well at 1B and that he did actually destroy AZ and the NWL, but if it is all about the bat, shouldn't the lack of dominance last year be a little disappointing? His number one goal, according to him and the FO was to learn to go the other way more, which they thought would result in a power decrease initially. Okay. But again, in order for this guy to make it he's going to have to hit like a beast, which means top of the list. He was 25th in OPS in the Midwest League. We know he can't field, we don't know how well he can hit. I think we need to see him at the top of the leaderboard. There's nobody else screaming to take his place here, but I'm looking to push him as far down as possible until he actually does dominate a full seaosn league with the bat.
  20. I think they did that, expecting to do more this year, but got scared off by Castro and Rizzo not making strides. So, they took a step back, since payroll is an issue with us and they didn't want to box themselves in. That is a frightening concept.
  21. Strange thing about this mess in Cleveland is that Jimmy Haslam's dad is a major booster at Tennessee and is mostly hands off and patient - completely the opposite of the Cleveland mess going on. I hear Haslam's name brought up a lot but is Michael Lombardi just some sort of figure head? I thought the deal was he was named GM after Chud was hired, which ultimately led to Chud not being a match with the new regime.
