  1. That is not a particularly good comparison. He's not a potential gold glove SS because he doesn't actually play shortstop. Calling somebody a potential .300 hitter isn't the same as calling them a career .300 hitter, it isn't really saying much of anything. Dusty Baker once called Bill Mueller a potential hitting champion and he was coming off a .268 AVG before coming to the Cubs. He won batting title with a .326 a few years later and that was 35 points above his career average. Villanueva hit .314 as a 19 year old and was hitting .285 in A+ before coming over in the trade. Jayson Werth is coming off back to back .300 seasons despite being a .271 hitter in the minors and spending most of his major league career closer to that level, including a .274 career mark. Andrew McCutheon hit .265 in AA and wasn't flirting and hit .259 the season before his first of back to back .300 seasons. Plenty of guys didn't hit .300 until they actually turned into a .300 hitter in the major leagues. He may never do it, but saying he has the potential to do it is not that egregious of a statement.
  2. Not sure why Urlacher would have a publicist right now. But I'm guessing this sort of "straight talk" is only a positive for him while trying to make a name in the media side.
  3. I got through for opening day a little while ago but of course I'm not going.
  4. I saw his name and thought they were going to talk about him agreeing with Urlacher or something.
  5. Who said anything about high level? He was annoyed that he didn't see any of Boston's starters and that is a perfectly reasonable stance to take.
  6. Expecting to see a couple of the names you know is hardly "expecting much". I know we're 5 years into this pathetic rebuild and don't have any veterans to care about so we only think about prospects, but normal baseball fans do like to see actual major league baseball players when they pay to see a game.
  7. Miami and Houston are the two organizations that should never, ever, ever, ever be allowed to complain about another team putting a "B" lineup out there. I don't really care what different organizations think of one another, but the one and only Spring Training game I've ever attended was a split squad Red Sox team against Toronto, and literally NONE of the "A team" Red Sox were at my game. It was Toronto's starters against Boston's AAAA team and bench. And? Really? He was probably annoyed that he paid money and saw no quality players.
  8. Single game tickets go on sale in one hour, TODAY!!!!! ARE YOU READY!!!!!!!!!
  9. I'd take that bet. He's been sitting around saying next to nothing and only occasionally chiming in with interesting commentary about the players nobody has heard of since it is spring training and nobody is paying attention.
  10. Mick? He's not really subbing in, he's been doing PBP on the cubs.com feed most of the time, with Len chiming in from time to time. I assume it's some sort of training/tryout thing for him, while Len is just farting around.
  11. This is just typical veteran baseball player stupidity. He was apparently asked if he could put up numbers like Trout, that's a question about 2014, not 2004. What he did last decade has nothing to do with anything.
  12. It is entirely inaccurate because Pujols cannot do what Trout will be doing this year, and that is the question.
  13. http://www.bleachernation.com/2014/03/06/sammy-sosa-when-is-he-coming-back-is-there-a-market-advantage/ PFTCommenter quoting bleacher nation anti-Sosa comment
  14. Hoyer on Vitters: We're going to put him in left field. He'll place some first. We feel good about our third base situation (list of non-Vitters people), but he's going to play left field.
  15. reasonable? .230/.300/.400, ~2 WAR pace he can also take ABs from Barney (Valbuena to 2B), and Rizzo vs. LHP I get the feeling the guy could be very good if he's actually able to play well enough to justify a spot on a major league team. If 2013 was a fluke of a season, then hasn't he shown he's capable of a lot more than that? If 2013 wasn't a fluke, then he's not doing that well anyway.
  16. I've missed him for a couple years now.
  17. If you take out the one line about how it is "weird" that we ignore these guys (and he cited other teams/players here) and just read the other quotes, it doesn't seem at all like he wants it to happen.
  18. Weird choice in title. That was not my interpretation of his answer to the question while listening live. He did mention how it was weird that we basically don't acknowledge these people, but that was balanced both before and after with words and body language that indicated to me he's got very little interest in doing that. He basically said he doesn't see it happened and blamed it on not wanting to offend tight asses.
  19. I don't think there was anything wrong with signing Brad Maynard.
  20. You never draft one. You do sign guys though.
  21. speaking of Baez, on that earlier Kaplan/Haugh interview with Ricketts, it was noted that Kaplan wants the Cubs to sign Baez to a longterm extension now.
  22. Imagine the never ending media hand wringing over his tweets if he played in the NFL.
  23. mostly. Much moreso than it is about making sure he actually dominates AAA. Much more than Epstein himself lets on.
  24. Why does Baez need to prove himself at AAA? Is there something he specifically is not doing well yet, or is this just a Theo philosophy that all prospects need to dominate at that level? If it's the latter, that's pretty bizarre. There have been top prospects who skipped AAA and did just fine -- obviously. Yes, he has further developing to do. He needs to further develop his plate discipline and show that he can handle some craftier pitching (kind of hand in hand, for that matter). And I don't see what's bizarre about expecting your players to dominate every level of the minor leagues before being promoted. Certainly the results of Theo's systems can't really be argued with. Let's not pretend this isn't entirely about the money. They have to say that he needs to develop more because they cannot say how stupid it would be to call him up for opening day from a financial perspective.
  25. your boy parks said the same thing. probably put some weight on. i remember someone posting some shirtless pic from his instagram and commenting that he had some muscle on him. also remember that he's only 19. He's 19? How is that possible? I was thinking 21. He turns 20 in a month. He was drafted in 2012 at the age of 18.
