  1. I am very sympathetic to the concept of pitcher abuse but do not think they've done anything wrong with Arrieta.
  2. not that i'm defending the decision, but joe said he's the most well conditioned athlete he's ever been around. he really doesn't look like he ever labors and so i'm sure there is truth behind this mentality, but it doesn't seem like it's necessary. And Mark Prior had perfect mechanics. This decision was [expletive]. Mark Prior got [expletive] up by a [expletive] Achilles, getting clobbered on the basepaths and taking a linedrive off of the elbow. Yeah, Dusty sucked and WAY overused him (in his ROOKIE season; Jake's been around), but the narrative has mutated to the point that people talk like overuse and mismanaging is basically all that destroyed him. That narrative is correct and this is nothing like it. Arrieta isn't a kid nor is he injured.
  3. Seriously, anybody who doubted him should feel shame.
  4. Probably
  5. Lester will go Game 1 and Arrieta would be on short rest game 2, no? So wouldn't a bullpen game most likely be game 2? Arrieta goes game 3? Isn't the DS Schedule the Friday and Saturday after the WC game on Wednesday for games 1 and 2? NL schedule: WC game Wednesday October 7 Then Friday, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday Thursday. WC game pitcher won't be available until Game 3 (on normal rest). Game 2 would be 2 days rest and bad idea. I think you throw Lester game 1 and if you win you go bullpen game 2, Arrieta game 3, Hendricks game 4, Lester Game 5.
  6. more piggybacking!
  7. this is terrible

  14. http://deadspin.com/john-tortorellas-conference-call-got-hijacked-by-pranks-1732407961 Pranksters steal an old nsbb (or was it pre-nsbb) trick and hijack a conference call for USA Hockey coach Tortorella.
  15. did the cubs pick up Gorzallany for the stretch run?

  18. Is there a reason for that that I've missed? My assumption has been that part of the reason why the 8 hole makes sense is that when you have a pinch hitter for the pitcher early in the game it adds a better hitter more often. But with your guys you expect to pitch 8/9 innings, that part of the equation is reduced, if not removed, and therefore the improvement at 8 is not gained, so it's back to 9. Arrieta and Lester are at the stage where the Cubs are expecting complete games, whereas everybody else is struggling to last 5/6 innings.

  20. tony the tiger beat me to it, but it really looks like they are settling into the Arrieta/Lester batting 9th while the rest of the scrubs go 8 thing. Probably count on that in the playoffs.
