  1. That was the one that jumped to mind for me too. Was he really an average prospect? He wasn't highly touted at draft time, but didn't he make a quick impression? I guess you'd have to include Mike Piazza in such a list. Kyle Farnsworth wasn't much of a prospect, but he's had an above average major league career, I think. I'm guessing there are quite a few pitchers who weren't all that highly thought of as prospects who turned out above average careers.
  2. There's a joke in there somewhere.
  3. Good thing we ordered 8 more beers just before the cut-off time.
  4. My amateurish reading of the weather websites says they should get this game in, then it will rain over night and early Saturday. Then they will get the Saturday and Sunday games in with rain expected again late Sunday. Also, the forecast in the Myers household is punchy with a slight chance of blood.
  5. Hill had a 5.54 ERA there in 2 starts last season.
  6. If we are going to risk pitcher's health, I'd rather it be old dudes like Lieber. It's not unheard of for guys like him to make a spot start and be perfectly fine for 5-6 innings - see David Weathers. Plus, Lieber hasn't been taxed at all this year. He went 2 innigs, 24 pitches, had 2 days rest, and 3 innings 35 pitches. He threw multiple innings on multiple occasions in the spring, and has an entire career of starts under his belt. We aren't talking about asking Howry or Wuertz to start here. If Lou is seriously considering the Pirates' early splits, Lieber starting is a legit option.
  7. Wouldn't know...not a Cub employee. I wasn't happy when the Cubs hired Lou as I preferred Girardi. Now I could eat my words on the Girardi thing at some point but we shall see. But I am still waiting for the game where the Cubs forfeit because Lou has run out of players. It will happen yet. Will that happen before or after the next time Girardi starts a reliever and brings in his starter to relieve?
  8. Couldn't somebody who is willing to spend a lot of money for good seats be considered die-hard? I don't see why camping out overnight gives somebody more right to seats. Everybody likes to pick on the "the suits" and "corporate seats", but my experience has been that most of the people getting these seats are very big fans. Whether they are the CEO, or a receptionist who got the unused tickets at 6:15, the people who end up going are typically very much interested in the game.
  9. There was no doubt by anybody involved, Len, Felix, etc. They didn't do much of a replay, but when Laroche hit his homer (I think it was him) to RF, you could tell it landed much further to fair side of the pole.
  10. I'm not sure guys learn that skill, at least not at his age/experience level.
  11. Warner Wolf, a longtime NY area sports guy on the news, and ESPN 1050 personality, recently told the story, I believe, about the first time a team (probably Yankees) used numbers. They stuck to the number of their position or batting order, can't remember. I think it was in the 20's.
  12. Well he is carrying a .083/.333/.208 line with an OPS of .541 so far. Dusty has no patience for someone hitting under .100, and he has no issue with using a less than 10 game sample size (as we all know well). Anyway, back to the Cubs, I really hope the patience Ramirez has exhibited continues, because as much as people have debated the placement of Fukudome in the 5-spot, having Lee-Ramirez-Fukudome at 3-4-5 as the walks leaders on this club will be an exciting development for a Cubs franchise that has been laking such patience. Obviously 1-2 is going to continue to spark debate for several more years given Soriano's contract. But Fukudome appears to have immediate impact so far, and I hope that patience catches on with the younger guys. I fear Aramis's patience is a bit of a mirage. He's patient in the sense that he'll take pitches, but it seems to me that he just decides beforehand whether or not to take a pitch, especially the first pitch, and isn't really recognizing balls and strikes all that well. Once he gets two strikes, he's hacking at everything. Of course, I've only actually seen a small percentage of his at bats, and have no idea. I'm probably just basing this off his history as a bit of a hacker.
  13. It hadn't really dawned on me how weak this system was until I started seeing these box scores. There isn't a single Cubs prospect I'm interested in.
  14. No you won't, you already have a team and I'm not sharing. It's been well over 12 hours since this started, and the rules clearly stated the general public can make the pick after that time is up. Therefore, the Miami Dolphins select Chris Long with their first pick. With no surefire number 1 star in the field, the Dolphins select the next best thing, a signable, impact defensive player with pedigree and all the physical skills. The St. Louis Rams are on the clock. reggiemillerrules is up. well wait, was warpticon PM'ed about the start of the draft? No more wait, it's April 10. If everybody takes the 12 hours allotted, we will barely make it through the first round before the draft. If he cared I'm sure he would have noticed the thread the past couple days.
  15. I don't like the idea of Fuku in CF and Ward in right today, coming off 4 consecutive non-starts, Pie needs to get in there. I'm really liking the Reed Johnson against lefties thing though, he reall does remind me of Murton with his approach. Cedeno is playing fairly well, he should either start again today, or get right back in there this weekend. I'm guessing Lieber is first out of the pen today. I was not happy to see Marmol in again last night. That just didn't make sense to me. Why be cautious only with guys who have already been injured? How about a little preventive medicine?
  16. And yet, the injury remains an issue. The Bears offering him a boatload would be taking a major risk.

  18. well shoot i guess they're basically eliminated, what with 7 whole losses. might as well give up now. In the history of the major leagues, no team that has started 0-7 has ever made the playoffs. They're going to have a rough time overriding all that history. Not saying it can't be done, but they've put themselves in a very bad position now. They're 5 games back with 155 to go. They're a long, long way off from having to worry. Long, long way? I don't think so. They have to win a game pretty soon and stem the bleeding. They may be a long way from being eliminated, but they are not a long way from having to worry.
  19. Thanks, I fixed it. And the I-Cubs website confirms that you're right. Cubs call up Marshall, send down Pignatiello By Paul Sullivan, 3:19 p.m. PITTSBURGH -- Well, we got the answer to the fourth topic in my earlier post today. Sean Marshall is in the locker room to take over the left-handed relief duties and Carmen Pignatiello was sent to the minors. Marshall had made one start for Triple-A Iowa (0-0, 0.00 ERA), pitching three scoreless innings. He didn't give up a hit and is still listed on the team's Web site as the probable starter tonight against Albuquerque. Marshall went 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA in seven spring outings. Pignatiello was on the Opening Day roster and pitched twice in relief (2.2 innings) with a 13.50 ERA. The Cubs also have lefty relievers Neal Cotts and Les Walrond in Iowa.
  20. None too pleased with all that fraternization on the field. Unruly spectators coming onto the field is a longstanding Chicago tradition.
