  1. Not sure if now or after this season.
  2. It's not a snub. He just retired, and he just talked about coming back. If they never do anything with Sammy in the future it may become a snub, but not now. Grace has no business being retired. You can't just retired all your good players' numbers. You'll run out of numbers in a decade. It all depends on whether or not they win a world series. If they do, a number of guys will become folk heroes and be considered for the honor. Depending on how his career progresses, Harden could get his retired. If he pitches 25 games a year, wins 18, strikes out a ton, and performs huge in the playoffs (not to mention, sticks around) he's going to be worshipped eventually.
  3. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/chi-16-haugh-bears-chicago-apr16,0,6550448.column I can't believe somebody feels the need to write such a blurb. Why would anybody suggest faith in a player they drafted last year is misplaced, when we never saw him play? The beat writers all took the bait when the Bears decided Mark Bradley wasn't a good enough practice player to deserve playing time, I wouldn't be surprised if they decide Bennet stinks since the geniuses that run the Bears offense decided he shouldn't play last year. I am also not willing to give up on Bennett yet. I just don't have enough information to make a judgement either way.
  4. Was there anything more predictable than this team losing after the entire media and some players were out talking about the matchup with Orlando? Why would anybody have assumed a victory by the Bulls?
  5. Okay, I've seen this sentiment in a couple places, I don't get it. The 2008 Bears went into the season with Orton and Grossman competing for a job, two QB's universally laughed at by everybody. They were coming off a sub .500 season, and they played 5 primetime games. What is the big deal about them playing 5 this year?
  6. Population size matters to a degree, mostly because the larger the population, the higher the percentage of minorities, generally speaking. For a number of reasons, minority populations are higher in more urban areas. And greater numbers leads to more interracial exposure, which leads to a relatively higher degree of tolerance. It just happens that Chicago seems to have resisted full integration more than the other big cities. I used to live in Hyde Park, so I have seen first hand just how stark the contrasts within the city (and even a very small area) can be. I also spent time in NYC, and didn't get the same feeling, at least not to the extend I did in Chicago. In smaller cities, it is easier to shove the minorities off into a corner and ignore them, so to speak. then you haven't spent significant time in NYC. Chicago has the "city of neighborhoods" reputation that inevitably leads to different "sections". But NYC has the same thing. The dividing lines between the upper west/east sides and Harlem are stark. The areas of brooklyn are very strictly broken up. You take certain subway lines and it's mostly white people, others are mostly black and still others are made up of hispanic. What about LA? Nobody can tell me that's a highly integrated city.
  7. If Fontenot thought it went to the backstop and so could take 3rd easily and have Johnson right behind him, then it makes sense to take 3rd (to stay out of the DP that Soto grounded into). Unfortunately Fontenot read it wrong while Johnson read it correctly. The sad part is that if either one of them had reversed (Fontenot reading it correctly or Johnson also reading it wrong) the Cubs would still be batting. The problem is you don't go to 3rd if you think it went, you have to know it went. You can't mess around with so few outs and such little value in going from 2nd to 3rd. There was just nothing to gain there.
  8. Id be all for Guz getting the closer job, but I think hes going to have to show Lou he can throw strikes consistently before its even considered. yeah he needs to get confidence in his stuff and learn not to nibble against big league hitters. plus the guy really needs experience, he's been hurt so much during his career. throwing him into the closer role at this stage is really premature. Yeah, I'd have to agree. Plus, I don't think I'd like to see him become the closer, than get injured and have to go back to Gregg.
  9. He also had a dumb manager, whos team regularly made head scratching moves on the basepaths and defensively. Well no question, but I'm not talking about he attempted a steal when he shouldn't have. He made a lot of stupid plays that the manager had nothing to do with. That's true, but Theriot has made a lot of dumbass moves as well, but those were "gutsy". The biggest one against Cedeno was sliding past the bag on ball 4. But that was more weird than stupid.
  10. Neither is great, but give me the guy that has more upside, plays better defense, hits for more power, and doesnt cost 2.5 million for 2 year. Upside? He's 26. He is who he is. Defense? Yes. Power? Yes, but not enough to make up for his abysmal OBP. Money? Yes, Miles is stupidly overpaid. But he's still a better hitter than Ron Cedeno. He's now entering is who he is territory. But he can still show improvement the next couple years without it being a huge surprise. Theriot went from crap to acceptable between his age 27 and 28 seasons.
  11. Definitely new thread. NSBB mock draft 2009 part deux
  12. Even if people say they want to pick the same guy, there's no guarantee he will be there. I don't see the point of a poll. If you get 20 for and 25 against, does that justify not doing another one? I'd be surprised if people didn't enjoy doing it again. There's no reason why you can't keep this one going if you want, but a new first would be in addition, not a replacement.
  13. Just because it's a "generally known fact" around the league doesn't mean it's true. It's a generally known fact that Cardinals fans are the best in baseball. I think many here would disagree with that. My problem comes from the fact he uses Jacque Jones and LaTroy Hawkins as examples of racist behavior. They weren't booed because they were black; they were booed because they failed a lot. Also, the most booed Cub I've ever heard is Todd Hundley. I'm sure there are racists who go to Cubs games, but I really am skeptical that it's a higher ratio than any other ballpark. I think Jacque tried to pretend he was booed mostly because he was black. He heard all the boos, and in that there was some racist taunts, no doubt, and then he decided all the boos were racially motivated. It was ridiculous, but there is no doubt there was some racial issue. Likewise, Dusty Baker was foolishly worshipped when the Cubs first won, then universally hated as the team crumbled. He decided to pretend fans hated his blackness more than his incompetence, because there was just no way any not bigoted scumbag could have a problem with Dusty Baker.
  14. That's a weird theory. Wrigley also has a very unique amount of fan placement in the OF. Shea had nothing like it. Yankee stadium had a very limited amount. Many stadiums have bullpens between the OF and field, or other significant space. I think this is a rather weak assumption.
  15. They aren't having anything taken away from them. A new 1st/2nd round mock is just much more interesting than a 5th round at this point. If you want, keep going with the 5th and start a new one as well. I see no reason why not. I'm not asking to delete everybody's posts on this topic so far. Just start a new one.
  16. We might get the first round in if we did it that way. And I don't think the first round would change dramatically. I think it would. I can already tell you the top pick would change, and from there, any ripple effect is possible. I'd be fine also doing the first round over. Absolutely. The first pick is ridiculous, and many of the follow ups will change depending on how that pick changes. Then you have Denver with 2 picks, and the Bears with none. I say start fresh with Mock 2.0 and give people a 6-hour daytime limit and 12-hour overnight limit. You could get into the 2nd round by the time the draft actually starts, especially since excitement/attention for the draft is increasing. Nobody knows jack squat about the 5th round.
  17. I don't see anything "clearly" about it. It is listed as both April 13 and April 15. Why would he post this note after the Cubs game anyway (7:26 pm)? He says "again", and he references Cubs officials saying 3-5 days, something that was not discussed Monday. So he wrote the article for today, but it was dated for the 13th and posted at the latest as of 3:30 PM yesterday. April 15, 11:00 AM. It doesn't make any sense that he would have posted that on April 13 at 7:26. The most likely explanation is the timestamp is screwed up and it is today.
  18. Instead of the 5th round, I say start over and do it again. There's been a lot of changes since this thing started.

  20. I can't see how you possibly think that that entry is meant for anything except Monday. I mean, Aramis may end up pulled today, but that blog isn't reporting it. If you click on the links to the right, the one dated: Apr. 15, 2009, 10:37 AM, brings this story up. Seems pretty clear it's about today's game. The April 13 timeline of 7:26PM appears to be wrong.
  21. Uh, yeah he was. That was his best, and that was the problem.
  22. This is what I'm saying, in a nutshell. I think my faith in Chicago to give it time is just very low. I can't wait until the first time Cutler throws a pick and someone tries to compare him to Grossman  The good thing is, he is here now. They don't have to wait until the draft to get him started, and they don't have to wait for him to decide on whether he will retire until the preseason games are halfway over. They have mini-camps, OTAs and training camp, not to mention volunteer alone time where he can get prepared. I'm not that concerned about fans going ballistic immediately. The first home game is going to be a struggle, but I'm pretty sure fans will know this, and not be too judgemental. If he has a Grossman day, QB rating of 4.7 or something, then yes, they will probably revolt. But as long as he doesn't meltdown, they will give him some time. They can't afford to crap the bed against Detroit though. By then, he has to be playing well and the offense has to be moving and controlling the ball.
