I don't see anything "clearly" about it. It is listed as both April 13 and April 15. Why would he post this note after the Cubs game anyway (7:26 pm)? He says "again", and he references Cubs officials saying 3-5 days, something that was not discussed Monday. So he wrote the article for today, but it was dated for the 13th and posted at the latest as of 3:30 PM yesterday. April 15, 11:00 AM. It doesn't make any sense that he would have posted that on April 13 at 7:26. The most likely explanation is the timestamp is screwed up and it is today. -
Instead of the 5th round, I say start over and do it again. There's been a lot of changes since this thing started.

I can't see how you possibly think that that entry is meant for anything except Monday. I mean, Aramis may end up pulled today, but that blog isn't reporting it. If you click on the links to the right, the one dated: Apr. 15, 2009, 10:37 AM, brings this story up. Seems pretty clear it's about today's game. The April 13 timeline of 7:26PM appears to be wrong.

This is what I'm saying, in a nutshell. I think my faith in Chicago to give it time is just very low. I can't wait until the first time Cutler throws a pick and someone tries to compare him to Grossman :roll: The good thing is, he is here now. They don't have to wait until the draft to get him started, and they don't have to wait for him to decide on whether he will retire until the preseason games are halfway over. They have mini-camps, OTAs and training camp, not to mention volunteer alone time where he can get prepared. I'm not that concerned about fans going ballistic immediately. The first home game is going to be a struggle, but I'm pretty sure fans will know this, and not be too judgemental. If he has a Grossman day, QB rating of 4.7 or something, then yes, they will probably revolt. But as long as he doesn't meltdown, they will give him some time. They can't afford to crap the bed against Detroit though. By then, he has to be playing well and the offense has to be moving and controlling the ball.

i have a feeling that people will see just how worthy we are of extra attention. It's going to be a completely overhauled offense, with a OL that features really only one familiar face, a new QB, and likely a new WR or two. how on earth can you view that as a bad thing? He wasn't. Or at least, it didn't look like he was. He was saying the offense is new and improved, but then pointed out the one thing that could be bad. I think this offense is poised to jump into the top half of the league, but I don't see top 10, yet. It will take some time.

I have some concerns about this schedule. I don't like playing Pittsburgh in the home opener, with them coming off a week and a half of rest (they start thursday night). I don't like following pittsburgh with a trip to Seattle. I absolutely hate the west coast Thursday night game following a Sunday game. There's absolutely no excuse for the NFL to schedule Thursday night games without the bye preceding. How do you expect to showcase a game with players going on 3 days rest? It's absurd. I can really see this team struggling to be .500 going into December. I'm guessing they are underdogs in the first two games, and depending on those outcomes, potentially an underdog on the road in Seattle. I don't like wasting a bye week in week 5 either.

Except that's not the point, he shouldn't get himself out as easily as he does. abuck is hung up on semantics. Of course it's not that easy, but it's easier than it should be.

i don't see how Soriano is a borderline HOFer. He played on the Yankees and was on a WS champion, but that's not enough to ignore his lack of numbers.

I don't much care what they're doing as long as they make it home in one piece. Someone mentioned earlier about switching a college D-lineman to OL. Didn't the Bears do that with Big Cat Williams? I don't know if it was the Bears who did it, but he was a DLineman. In fact, I don't think it even happened right out of college, but rather a few years into his NFL career that he made the switch. Edit- I guess it was the Bears, thats the only team he played for. However, he did spend two years on the defensive line in Chicago. Yeah, he was an UFA tackle who was low on the depth chart until Ditka moved him to tackle.

I can't tell if this is saying I can't watch game 2, or if it's saying I can't watch the Versus games on CSN, but can watch game 2 on CSN. It appears to say that if you have Center Ice, you'll get to watch any Hawks games on CSN that ARE NOT on Versus or NBC. So Center Ice fills in the gaps, and they would likely do so with the CSN feed (or perhaps both). I knew that CI carried the first two rounds of the playoffs in this way -- they just make sure you have a chance to see all the games that aren't on national TV. Okay, but isn't center ice just taking the CSN-Chicago feed? That seemed like a confusing reply. At first I thought it was saying I could not see game 2, but then I started to see it the way you explained. -
Maybe you can, but it can't exactly be anywhere near easy at the major league level. Sliders are supposed to be difficult to read. They're nasty breaking pitches being thrown by major league pitchers. Maybe he just isn't as good as the truly elite hitters at doing it. Maybe he could improve. It's really not easy to say. I think it's very easy to say he's not good at it, he should have improved that aspect of his game earlier in his life, and it's perfectly acceptable to criticize that area of his game.

I think it makes zero sense to suggest plate discipline can't be taught and improved. It is far more likely a nurture issue, rather than nature, that determines how patient a guy is at the plate. The whole "you have to hit your way off the island" and hit your way through the minors and it's called hitting not walking thing has rubbed off on players. Soriano could have been better at that aspect of the game. If he physically couldn't then fine, I'll criticize his lack of physical ability to be a better baseball player, just like I criticize Theriot's lack of ability to hit for any power or any number of pitcher's lack of ability to throw better breaking balls and faster fastballs. But it still makes no sense to suggest you can't learn and improve plate discipline.

But if your eyesight is good enough to make it possible for you to hit at the major league level, it's good enough to allow you to be able to layoff balls.

people make this argument all the time, and it's obvious that either a) it's not as easy as you think to throw certain pitches in certain spots all the time or b) he truly doesn't flail at every slider away. otherwise he'd be ryan harvey and not a borderline HOFer. Or C, professional baseball pitchers are cocky sons of bitches that think they can get anybody with their heat and don't need to [expletive] foot around with nothing but breaking balls.

All toolsy prospects with the actual ability to advance in the game of baseball have the ability to improve their plate discipline with work. There's a lot of toolsy SOB's who are worthless. Soriano's toolsiness was special, and there was no question in my mind he could have developed a better approach.

Jacque and LaTroy don't fit that description. Jacque was booed on the first homestand cause he started like 0-14. LaTroy was booed after blowing like 1 save. Hmm, I thought it was longer for both of them. Ok, strike them from the example. Jacque was booed because he was absolutely the wrong fit for the team, fans knew it, he started horribly (offensively and defensively) and bitched about the fans. Latroy had a reputation for being a good reliever but choker in the closer's role before he became a Cub, and when that reputation appeared to be validated very early on, people didn't forgive. Regardless of your stance on booing, it doesn't make any sense to criticize people for not giving a veteran acquisition enough time. Veterans have enough of a track record to judge their ability to contribute. I don't need 100 PA to figure out my feelings about Neifi Perez. -
I was exaggerating while making the point that I dont' really watch Vlad much, but I've seen Soriano on a regular basis throughout his career due to location. Vladdy makes it work much better than Soriano has. Vladdy walks 60ish times a year, and often strikes out less than he walks. Soriano is applauded when he reaches 40 walks. I don't know that he can do better, but I'm going to assume he could have because it's ridiculous to assume he could not. There's no reason why a player can't learn plate discipline. At this stage of the game, no, but over the first 10 years of his professional career, why not? He's got loads of talent, but gets himself out far too often and doesn't take what pitchers give him.

I'm excited. Bears are said to have the easiest schedule next year based on opponents, but a lot of that is 2 vs. the 0-16 Lions. Getting Arizona or Minnesota in Chicago in December would make things that much more favorable for the Bears. Same goes for playing Pitt and Baltimore early in the year on the road. Another thing to consider is over the last few years teams have sucked after playing the Steelers. So, I'm hoping the Lions or the bye week (same thing right?) immediately follow that game. Pitt is in Chicago. Yeah, i knew that because I would be going if it was here. Okay, well that sentence confused me. I don't know what time of year is best for the Bears to face Pittsburgh, but for selfish reasons I'm hoping for early.

Soriano has been a Yankee and a Cub, so I've seen him a lot. I don't even know where Vladdy plays. But he's done better with his tools than Soriano has. He has a career .389 OBP and 147 OPS+, and has been very productive in pretty much every season he's played. Soriano is .329, 117 and has had a few disappointing seasons. They aren't the same player.

I've always disliked Soriano's game. He's got all the talent in the world but does not take full advantage of it. His approach was fun to laugh at while he was a Yankee, but it drives me nuts while he's a Cub.
