It's April 23. I love how you pile on the Cubs but yet say you're optimistic about a team that finished 41-41 in the regular season, a team that struggled in its two playoffs wins and played poorly for five of the six periods on the road, and a team that still has no WR's and an aging defense. I guess I better put logic away though since I am in a game thread. Hey, just because the Packers suck doesn't mean you can take it out on everybody else. -

They've looked lost at times, and yet, no matter how this game ends, they will finish the day on pace for 92 wins.

Maybe because they are so old, and have multiple guys who aren't particularly ideal for the positions they play.

I would love to trade down at this point. They still have multiple holes, but they don't really need any one star, now that they got Cutler. If they can turn their 2 and their first 5 into a later 2 and another 3, that would be sweet.

That'd be wonderful if they heard it then and he was suspended for two playoff games because of it. That wouldn't be a possibility.

I think that says more about the industy than him. People constantly give Rick Reilly awards, but he's god awful. Posnanski has written some really stupid stuff on SI, and a couple other things that were surprisingly not stupid.

I believe they often try and time the appeals hearings to a team's visit to NY, which means Milton might not have his appeal heard until early September.

Sure, but it's still a matter of bodies. You don't really want to use your backup catcher. You also don't want to use your backup MI, for the same reasons, if he goes down nobody can man the position. That leaves 2 backup position players in any game that Bradley is sitting out. Cut Gathwright, and you only have 1 guy you feel comfortable going to in the middle of the game, for any purpose.

With Bradley essentially inactive, leaving only 3 bench players and a backup catcher on the roster (and one of the bench players being your only MI backup) that's really putting yourself at a disadvantage offensively.

Unless Lou thinks he's still not full strength after seeing him play yesterday. Damn you're smart. Maybe you can use that smartness to teach Harden how to be a star.

Why are people so hung up on the appeal story? He doesn't think he deserved suspension, he doesn't want to lose 2 days of pay, there's nothing wrong with him fighting it. There are going to be plenty of times the rest of the year where sitting for a couple days will more or less be a necessity. But basically he's hurting the team to do it. Will there be a time where he needs 2 games off? Yes, but we all know the best he's going to do with the appeal is get 1 game off. So, he's essentially hurting the team for 1/162 of his $10 million salary. Way to see you've changed, Milton. I tried to talk myself into this guy being a good addition, but the injuries and weirdness are just going to be too much, I'm afraid. Guy better put up a .900 OPS if we have to deal with all of this garbage. That is a bunch of BS. Players appeal suspensions all the freaking time.

If he plays less it becomes a $12m option with a $2m buyout. I'd say the odds are stacked unfavorably for Bradley to get that option to vest. I'd say the odds are heavily in his favor to be able to play 75 games this year.

http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/1848 Bruce also said Milton will bat 6th. I think part of that reflects how the pitchers approached Ramirez this week. He's the Cubs best hitter, and pitchers do not have any incentive to give him anything to hit. They threw at him a couple times, hitting him at least once. With the non-entities of Fontenot and Soto behind him, why not just plunk him repeatedly?

It absolutely slows his development as a starter. With as little experience pitching as he has, innings were always going to be an issue. Spending half of 2008 and most of 2009 as a reliever will severely limit his ability to both prepare his arm to handle longer innings, and work on the other pitches necessary to face a lineup 3 times in a game. It may not permanently eliminate any chance he has of starting, but it does slow the development. That said, I have always had my doubts he'd be anything more than a reliever.

Actually, if that's what you are basing it on, you should really rethink it. Latroy was supposed to be unavailable that game. He wasn't going to pitch. Dusty brings in Dempster, who let two guys on base, then rushes Latroy into the game. So he wasn't going to use him as the closer until he let the other guy put 2 guys on base first. That's setting a guy up to fail.

It might not matter what you, personally, give him. After today he's got 1 week before he returns to Wrigley. It could get really ugly in a hurry. and it could just as easily be forgotten with one good week. Sure, it could. But it's going to take one big week to get the boo birds off his back. And I don't think it takes a lot of boo birds to get into Milton's head. well, i don't doubt that morons will boo him mercilessly. that's absurd though. the guy has had 30 PAs. i highly doubt the guy who put .947 and .999 OPS the last two years suddenly forgot how to hit. It doesn't have anything to do with forgetting how to hit, and I never said it wasn't absurd. My concern is that it is happening though, and will continue to get worse unless he gets better, in a hurry. But it would not be at all surprising if he fails to come close to his past two seasons' OPS.

Yes, he is that much better. And two bad games aren't enough to put in a guy who hasn't played in two weeks, either. You don't just switch goalies on a whim in the playoffs. And no, in the middle of the playoffs, especially in the middle of a closely contested series, you do not seriously consider changing goalies just to give the guy with a longer contract more experience. Khabi has been good for the Blackhawks for about 2 months of his entire contract. He's had some very weak stretches of play. I don't see the point in staying loyal to him at this point. And yes, teams have made early switches at goalie and enjoyed the results. -

When we look back on why the promising young crop of Hawks never quite made it to Cup-winning level, never caught up with Detroit, I'm going to point to two bad signings: Campbell and Huet. Good players, but bad fits for this team and way too much money. I think that could very easily be true with Campbell. But Huet didn't get that much money, or that long of a contract. By the time the young guys are at their best, they should have a younger goalie pushing him out the door. But the Campbell contract is probably going to hurt, a lot, barring multiple solid defensemen coming up through the system.
