    Fearless prediction for that PR boost: Pay Bradley to play elsewhere, find money for one decent name, and hire Ryne Sandberg either as a bench coach or new manager. You'll get a lot of people excited without actually doing anything productive.

    I think you're probably right, but I also think they kind of have to go with some combination of internal options in RF anyway if they deal Bradley. I think Colvin's second half put him in contention for a job next year, regardless of how he does in his call-up.

    Wasn't it 4 weeks? I don't know, would a Colvin/Fox platoon be any worse than what they got this year, .262/.368/.406 in RF? Perhaps. I think Colvin could be really really bad. But I think he stands a chance of holding his own, especially if you let a guy like Fox attempt to mash the lefties. Tyler's career line .277/.320/.465. Oh wait, you were saying if he finishes this season with 2 hot weeks, not that he did finish his AA season with 2 hot weeks. Yeah, the Cubs are pretty dumb, but I don't think they will make a decision based on that alone. They are pretty much screwed in the OF regardless of what they do, especially if they eat a bunch of Bradley money.

    Yeah, I didn't have much hope for Fox before this year, but he's shown enough to be given such a job. The fact that he hasn't been traded to an AL team in need of a cheap bat suggests to me there just isn't a market out there for him, so I think I'd rather just keep him in that role.

    DL him. Forcing a guy onto the DL when he doesn't need to go on the DL is the same thing as suspending him. You think other front offices will be fooled by such a move? He missed the previous couple games with an injury, that started with Bradley himself taking himself out of the game. He's legitimately hurt, and DLing him serves as a de facto suspension(because he could've played after like a week of rest), while still being an entirely plausible explanation("Milton's hurt, we want to make sure he doesn't aggravate his surgically repaired knees to make sure he's ready for next season, etc."). Plus it opens up the flexibility of his option not yet being guaranteed. You're still not going to fool other front offices into thinking you are forced to dump him, and a DL stint doesn't get him out of the clubhouse, which the other players clearly preferred. I do not understand how anybody can have a problem with the Cubs suspending Milton.

    Yes. These games are meaningless and making this big of a deal just causes the Cubs' bargaining position in trading Bradley plummet from minimal to practically non-existent. I don't see how the decision to suspend him changes what they could get him. If the Cubs were deadset on moving him in the offseason, teams were going to know. It's on Jim now to get the best offer, but we knew all along that if he was going to trade Bradley in the offseason he was screwed anyway. The Cubs front office is extremely player friendly. In my opinion, too friendly. But there has to be a line drawn somewhere. You can't let everything go with no chance for repurcussions. The best players on this team are down on Bradley and sick of his act. Give them a break of not having to deal with it. As you said, the games are meaningless at this point, so the logic of having your best players on the field is less important.

    They should win by a couple, not 10. I'm guessing the Bears will be favored by 1 if Hasselback plays, or 4 if he's out.

    Translation, my friend thinks Tony Dungy sounds like a white man pretending to talk like a black man and I'm too clueless to realize that maybe I shouldn't note this in my weekly column. Needless to say I'm anxiously awaiting the kissingsuzykolber take on King's article.

    You can't blame a sick person for being sick. It's who he is and Hendry knew that going in. I can blame a jerk for being a jerk.

    I'm not talking about blame for what has gone wrong this season, that probably falls mostly on Soriano (after you get past the irrational offseason motivation that ultimately led to replacing Edmonds and DeRosa with Bradley and Miles). But I'm talking about the Bradley situaiton itself, which is entirely Milton Bradley's fault. Suspending him doesn't accomplish anything, but at this point we aren't looking for accomplishments. When a player becomes as indignant as Bradley has become, you pretty much have to suspend a guy. He's just a horrible employee. If he was good, look past the shenanigans, but he's not good, and he's a complete [expletive] and the other players are sick of his crap.

    I don't think I chose to be irrationally attached on an emotional level to the outcome of games played by guys wearing Cubs uniforms so I'm not sure how I would even go about switching teams as a fan.

    Because he signed a pretty big deal, didn't perform well, and did everything he could to run himself out of town, thus hurting the team. He was basically a slightly more productive version of last year's Ryan Theriot, playing in RF, and making much more money. Because of his antics, the Cubs are almost forced to pay him to play somewhere else. Nobody wants him around, not his teammates, not his coaches, not even himself. Generally speaking I would say suck it up and keep the player, but when everybody in the organization expresses some form of relief when he's gone, it's hard to fault the organization if they feel he must go. And he brought this all on himself. There may be some blame to go around, but 99% of it is on Milton Bradley and people need to stop pretending otherwise.

    I have a hard time believing it will decline by 30%. Contrary to popular opinion, Wrigley doesn't sell-out every season win or lose, and tv ratings are directly correlated to success. It wasn't hard to sell hope in 99 and throughout much of the early 2000's, as a young emerging team with an expanding payroll, new acquisitions and newfound marginal success got hearts beating. They need to sell tickets this winter, and I'm guessing they will add enough payroll to add one fairly intriguing player.

    If you only followed them late, you might be disappointed by the early season play. The game never seems to be as crisp and fast early in the season as teams get their legs.

    The thing about Pitt is they win ugly. Ben can look like crap for 3.5 quarters but put his team in FG position late to pull out a 2 point win. They need to win by 4 to cover, 3 is a push. If they are down by 3 late will they drive all the way for a TD, or take the FG to tie? Just like the GB game, I penciled this one is as a loss in my 10-win season prediction, and I kind of expect the Bears to lose, but late by a couple points. Which means they could just as easily win.

    I found it hilarious that Holtz told him to fire his agent and just go to the 49ers and ask for the best offer. I'm sure that would work out swimmingly for him. It's even worse knowing this was old footage of Crabtree. I don't understand the problem. He has a horribly incompetent agent who is screwing up his career.

    Because Pittsburgh didn't do a damn thing and the Bears dominated their game but lost on a few stupid plays.
