  1. Lovie up now. if he talks about running the football I will kill something.
  2. He is actually taking over offensive play calling as well.
  3. I don't think Lovie was going to be canned if they lost that game, so I don't mind it so much. If anything it helped in the development of Cutler, sending him off on a good note.
  4. So it looks like they haven't done jack squat in terms of hiring coordinators.
  5. He has to say that. Money was obviously part of it, and it should be. But you can't say "part of the reason they are still here is because of money." It effectively makes them all lame ducks with no power, real or imagined. You have to sell it as a football decision.
  6. Phillips has to sugar coat to an extent, but I'm really annoyed at some of the nonsense he's spewing. Nobody has consistent success in this league? There's a lot of teams with a lot more consistent success than the Bears have had (hint, they are all QB-centric pass happy teams).
  7. pittsburgh fired their OC because he's too pass happy and not running the ball pittsburgh style. He could be a good hire, I'd love to have Pitt's offense.
  8. I hear papers shuffling, Ted Phillips is batting leadoff. starts with saying frustrating season to say the least, inconsistent play both sides of ball, praises passion of fans status quo not an option, changes are necessary, it's difficult with coaches who took team to super bowl last three years no one did a good enough job in this organization, not asking for patience, committed to putting winning team together, fastest way to improve is keeping continuity, with Jerry and Lovie.
  9. press conference is on the air. I'm listening to the Score online. I always remember why I can't stand these boers and bernstein guys whenever I hear them.
  10. Titular defensive coordinator, actually just linebackers coach. His contract expired.
  11. Well, it's hockey, where half the teams make the playoffs, so at the very least they should have a chance every year. And they have several very good players signed longterm, including a couple legit stars who should still get better. The 2005/2006 Bears relied on defense, a bad formula for longterm consistent success. The Bulls are in the NBA, where it's get yourself a superstar or get the hell out of the way, and they haven't had a star. The Cubs are just dumb, and they play the hardest league to get into the playoffs. I'm not that concerned about them sustaining success. They might be the best they are going to be this year, but not necessarily, and even a step back would keep them in contention and very good.
  12. I think I leaning towards liking the deal when you consider that if you trade certain guys like Buff, Versteeg, Barker, etc you have enough talent on the farm to replace them in the lineup (Beach, Aliu, LaLonde) not to mention I think the Hawks have enough picks between the next two drafts (12 in total, 5 in 2010, 7 in '11) to replace the said prospects. As long as the deal does not include the following (excluding the automatics of Kane, Toews, Hossa, and Keith) Sharp, Hammer, and Seabrook, I think I am ok with Kovy deal. I'm nearly convinced Sharp is the most likely guy to go. It's a nice chunk of change in the cap and they've got enough forwards to make up for him.
  13. Turner, Butkus, Hamilton, Hiestand and a couple other offensive assistants officially will not return.
  14. So would Fewell be back in running?
  15. interesting development
  16. Of the names mentioned, I think that is the order I'd go as well. Assuming the defense remains weak in 2010 and they struggle, Bates is in position to be HC with a new defensive overhaul, minimizing the changes Cutler would have to go through.
  17. It's documented to not be allowed in salary cap sports, not sure exactly why it would be an issue in the MLB other than conflict of interest in ownership/labor CBA disputes. But one player with a minority ownership stake shouldn't be meaningful. It's just a good way for owners to not let the elite players demand more of the pie, and for the MLBPA to keep all players focused exlusively on the players side of disagreements.
  18. Fantastic. I love that dude. http://www.clevelandleader.com/files/KitnaHalloween.jpg
  19. I don't konw why, but I recall hearing it's not allowed. I'm quite sure the Cardinals fans in your office pulled this straight from their collective asses. I'll fully admit to pulling this out of my arse, but they could mean he gets part ownership after he retires, not as part of his current contract. Kind of a buy now pay later unwritten agreement thing. I doubt it's a possibility, but that's probably what they meant. The unwritten language part of that would be an even bigger problem with the league.
  20. Lovie was going to have his hands on the defense if he was going to return, and he was always going to return. I'm not all that concerned with Marinelli's lack of DC history. He's been an NFL coach forever, he's been an asst head coach, and head coach, and has a bevy of experience in the tampa 2 system working under Dungy, Kiffin and Lovie. Compare that to Babich who has one year in the NFL before coming to the Bears, and then got Rivera's job.
  21. He's the guy whose name keeps coming up, potentially as a QB coach under another OC. He's never been an NFL OC, and has only been a college OC for one year (so Pete Carrol would probably cry about him leaving eligibility on the table). If you are trying to find the next Sean Payton, this might be the guy. But I would really hope he brings guys with real NFL coaching experience with him.
  22. Not specifically, but I remember his name coming up back when he was a truly horrible baseball player. That wasn't that long ago, and that is what scares me most about him. Guys who suck in their late 20's scare the bejesus out of me from a longevity standpoint.
  23. I wonder if Steve Mariucci's name has ever come up.
  24. I've been thinking about this for a while, but with the coaching decisions coming out, it's becoming clearer. The Gaines Adams trade guaranteed Jerry, Lovie and Rod would return in 2010. It was probably going to happen that way anyway, but that was the nail in the coffin. He became expandable in Tampa when they started to depart from the Tampa 2 defense. The Bears traded a 2010 #2 for him, eliminating their precense on the first day of the draft and essentially forcing whoever the coaches were in 2010 to get the most out of him. Had they made a change, the defensive gameplan probably changes, and somebody like Adams becomes worthless. The new regime would not have any day 1 draft picks to make an early impact, and with much of the free agent money likely going to the offensive line, they'd have a whole bunch of Lovie guys, 4-3 Tampa 2 style defenders and would be extremely limited in what they could do to overhaul the defense. The defensive coaches are going to remain stable, and so is the personnel, with any and all meaningful changes likely coming on offense.
  25. Excuses were eliminated when Rivera was canned, then again when he took control from Babich, and when they traded for a franchise QB. There are literally no excuses for Lovie and there haven't been any all season long. 7-9, 9-7, 7-9 say all they need to say. Lovie should have been given one post SB road bump season, and then forced to put up or shut up in 2008, let alone 2009, and now 2010.
