  1. They are on the Cubs. They are both above average. I don't know what else you want me to tell you. Do you think it is not likely, if not a near certainty, that both are going to be gone? And Aramis isn't really on the Cubs. I was responding to an idiotic claim that the Cubs have only 2-3 above average players. Those are players on the Cubs. Ramirez's stance is clearly a negotiating tactic in response to the lack of a GM who will talk to him. Either of them may be gone. Pena may be gone. Doesn't make a difference.
  2. They are on the Cubs. They are both above average. I don't know what else you want me to tell you.
  3. I don't think that the likelihood of Ramirez being here next year is very high at all and Zambrano is 99% gone with us pretty much guaranteed to pick up a significant chunk of the salary. I don't really care about the speculation. As the Cubs currently stand they have more than 2-3 above average players. They can choose to get rid of some of those above average players if they want to, but they are Cubs.
  4. How are the Cubs above average at only 2 or 3 spots? Garza, Dempster, Zambrano and Wells are all above average pitchers (don't start with the #1, #2 nonsense, a pitcher is a pitcher, an ace isn't a position). Ramirez and Castro are above average. Soto, Barney, Pena and Soriano are probably all a tick above average. Marshall and Marmol are above average, Samardzija is above average.
  5. Like hiring Theo Epstein. I was thinking investing heavily in draft and firing Jim Hendry. By then we knew he was doing good things.
  6. look i think everyone had some doubts, just because nobody knows the future, but ricketts said a lot of good things about a more statistical approach and investing more in amateur talent. then they didn't invest in amateur talent in 2010 and some people are already declaring him a disaster. i'd much prefer an owner who knows he's not a baseball guy and takes some time to evaluate the people he inherited rather than just immediately throwing everyone out on their ass and starting completely over. Mike Quade said a lot of good things last fall too. Saying good things is all well and good, but largely meaningless until you do good things.
  7. JR almost started an "occupy Wrigley" movement he was so angry that Ricketts went to Africa during the season. He could have gone on an American Made Safari!
  8. Some people were hung up on the notion that the owner went on vacation and wasn't available to answer questions about the team's struggles on a daily basis.
  9. Look, we're not sure what the compensation could be........, but,.......you have to believe the Red Sox deserve at least the two best Cubs prospects. But....., look....., who knows if the deal will even happen given how strong of a draw the Boston area is and how impossible it is for anybody to want to leave.
  10. If you bitched about the safari, you should have been ashamed of yourself the moment that bitching left your mind and hit the keyboard. If you bitched about the 2010 draft, there's really not much to be ashamed of. If you had doubts about Ricketts prior to the day the Hendry firing was announced (that's me) there's really nothing to be ashamed of.
  11. They will lose a game next year.
  12. June 2010 - Never Forget!!!
  13. or when theo left the sox and then came back like 2 days later He left last time because of internal turmoil and a breakdown in negotiations for his contract, not to pursue the president/GM role at the Cubs.
  14. Or they realized they'd have to do some serious spin when they gave Theo permission last Friday, so they leaked as many damaging details as possible so as to provide cover. I'm sure the meatheads in NE are going to talk even more fervently about "clearing out the entire organization," (even those who weren't on board with the Theo move). Given the way that ownership gets off fairly scott-free in that article (the worst accusation basically says they didn't know it was going on), it seems to me that this was an ownership-level leak. I'm not sure what the "or" was for, but that's exactly what I was saying.
  15. He was also an established starter before being a reliever, racking up 200+ inning seasons three times while in Florida. Bad comparison.
  16. http://deadspin.com/5848921/pitchers-hooked-on-beer-fried-chicken-and-video-games-francona-on-pills-the-boston-globes-version-of-the-2011-red-sox-collapse Looks like Boston's ownership has gone a little batty. They would seem to be hoping for a massive shake up, so Ricketts better not give them anything of value.
  17. Some times I feel that way, but then other times you see the guy go out and trade for a legit #1 QB. He ignores the offensive line in the draft, then he spends 2 #1 picks in 4 years on linemen. He got arrogant on things like the Bazuin and Wolfe picks, thinking he could overspend on his own diamonds in the rough. But then he also went out and got Peppers when his pass rush picks weren't panning out.
  18. They've drafted some quality defensive linemen. Unless Carimi turns into something, they can't say the same thing on offense. They've had huge busts, like that freaking idiotic Dan Bazuin selection, but Harris was great, Johnson and Dusty were good but with side issues that kept them from living up to their abilities. And a few other guys have been decent enough. Harris was the only one. Dvorcek (sp?) was injury riddled and Johnson didn't pan out. Paea hasn't even dressed yet on a D-Line with no depth. They traded a 2nd rd. pick on a 1st rd. bust, that doesn't factor what happened. Dusty was good and then he got injured, you can't claim they missed that badly on him in the draft when injuries were his undoing. They've screwed up the offensive line, but the defensive line hasn't been nearly as bad.
  19. Giving up Jackson would be a mistake. If you are hiring a guy with a promotion involved who the team has been completely noncommital about keeping longterm, it's stupid to even suggest that a #1 prospect needs to be returned.
  20. I wouldn't be fine with it. But if a gm gets to hire and fire one guy before his own seat gets warm it might as well be the overwhelming fan favorite.
  21. I think the personal struggle reports are nonsense. It's a negotiation and Epstein wants access to some of his underlings.
  22. That was a crazy threesome.
  23. And Soriano... and Casey Coleman, Rodrigo Lopez, etc. I think it's just going to be money. I hope so. I have a bad feeling that the Cubs will give up something stupid like Cashner. Give 'em Vitters and call it a day.
  24. We'll see. It's not as exciting as the day Hendry was fired. Maybe that will change when an announcement is made. But that one will be hard to beat. This would be way better than Hendry getting canned. That was nice, but this would be the fulfillment of the promise of that day, when names like Ned Colletti were being tossed around. I never thought then that Epstein was a real possibility. The day Hendry was fired, or more appropriately, his firing was announced, my opinion of Ricketts skyrocketted and any thoughts of Colletti were just nonsense tossed around by people whose livelihood depended on their contacts with that type of "baseball man". Before that day, I wasn't entirely comfortable with where he was taking this team. But that showed everything I needed to know. The next GM is just going to be the icing.
